The Break Down
The Tampa Bay Lighting goaltender, Andrei Vasilevskiy freezes the puck as Matt Calvert comes in close and engages with Erik Cernak. The two go chest to chest before beginning to joust a bit and then the gloves come off.
Cernak throws a right first and Calvert ducks to avoid that before another right from Cernak misses the mark and they tie up. Cernak gets off one more quick right underneath before they fall to the ice. Calvert briefly regains his footing and looks to continue the fight but the linesmen step in as Cernak rises again.
Matt Calvert Notes -
For Calvert, this was his first fight of the season. His last fight came in the 2018-19 season on March 3rd, 2019 against J.T. Brown of the Minnesota Wild.
It was his first career fight against Erik Cernak and his first career fight against someone from the Tampa Bay Lightning.
This was the 23rd fight of Calvert's 507 games in the NHL
Erik Cernak Notes -
For Cernak this is his first fight of the season. His last fight came in the 2018-19 season on March 3rd, 2019 against Tom Wilson of the Washington Capitals.
It was his first career fight against Matt Calvert and his first career fight against someone on the Colorado Avalanche.
This was the 3rd fight of Cernak's 66 games in the NHL.
Looked like a Draw to me. Nothing really stands out other than Calvert’s heart.
Sad state of fighting in the NHL. Let em go refs! They know the dangers, they’re willing, they’re insured. It’s part of the game that’s fading away sadly.
Slight edge to Cernak.
Cernak with win landing on the top of opponent doesnt qualify as a win
Cernak landed the first punch of the fight. Then may have landed the second, an uppercut, probably not flush if landed. After that it was just rasslin. Slight edge to Cernak. Pulling someone down to the ice does not win a fight IMO. @jfernandez is exactly right about the reason for the fight. So Calvert takes one for the team.
the fight is correct.just is cernak win because he dominated the fight longer than Calvert
Calvert just wanted to get Cernak off the ice because he was shutting down the top line. If you watch it closely, you can clearly see Calvert is trying to goat him. He really didn't want to go. That's why he pulled Cernak down instead of going toe to toe. He knew Cernak would have handled him. It worked because while Cernak was in the box, the Avs scored the three quick goals.
All Zebras here, nothing to see
The always game and always chippy Calvert takes on the much bigger Cernak. The fight was pretty even but, I'll give the slight edge to Calvert.
more of a scrum ....
Big guy picking a fight with a little guy. Pussy.
Looked like more than it was...Calvert jumping all over the place but didn't do much. Take downs usually turn into draws.
There was potential. Too bad the zebra got in way
I think Cernak tripped on that glove, oh well
83 for the win.
Not sure what the ref was thinking by jumping in during the middle of a fight -- this is how players get hurt and scores get settled later in games. The NHL really needs to work on its officiating when it comes to this stuff, let the boys go!
Calvert 2 win night
83 with the win.
