Rupp had the early edge and Erskine the latter edge..I think it was a draw at best..Did Rupp actually EVER win a fight? Honestly I am a Pens fan and never saw him actually win a fight..

Posted by irishpunk39 on January 05, 2011 at 06:57 AM

ok tilt.i like that erskine dude.should of won this one,but u cant win them all.draw in my book.

Posted by BooSanta on January 07, 2011 at 02:25 PM

Toe to toe, punch to punch. Rupp early, Eskine late. Old time hockey 70s style here! Draw

Posted by Bruins29 on January 03, 2011 at 10:31 AM

Good fight - draw. Why is Erskine receiving over 50% of the vote here? Both guys threw an equal amount of punches and nothing landed!

Posted by Behn Wilson on January 02, 2011 at 02:20 PM

Now THAT"S how you do it !!! Two evenly-matched, big-boys go toe, to toe under the stars. LO, friggin' L @ Slshbleed.

hey guys.u should realize this is no popularity contest.that's why i dont understand why erskine got so many votes in this fight.im one of his biggest fans since his rookie season but he was on his knees in this one!and he didnt land more than rupp....draw...gave it 7

Posted by b.t.wilson on January 02, 2011 at 01:41 AM

stoked to finally see a winter classic donnybrook! i thought it was pretty even until something happened at the end, not sure what it was, but rupp called it. well now that some peoples have filled me in on the wayward contact lens, i am going with a draw and a 7. unfortunate, it was looking good. love erskine, i still hear people knocking riley cote these days, and the reason i bring him up, is because he, likewise with erskine, always put on great scraps, and go for the gold. few guys that drop the mitts these days throw with reckless abandon like erskine does... "bad intentions" someone called it his last fight. just perfect. (win or lose, i miss cote). if this winter classic has taught me anything, it is to NEVER go to nbc to find out what the weather will be like.

' Man!!! 60,000 or 90,000 people screaming (I don't know what the actual attendance was). Good bout. Good draw. '

Another great Erskine fight! Under the lights, Winter Classic at night and two guys throwing with reckless abandon. Plus my team won!!! Very close fight, Rupp lost a contact, Draw.

Posted by slshbleed on January 02, 2011 at 04:07 AM

Somewhere out there, there is a dog named Rupp. The people who named it might not even follow hockey.

Posted by jezus on January 02, 2011 at 03:36 PM

I wish every bout was like this...i love watching Erskine fight! great show by both guys in a very spirited draw. 8

Posted by scorp1on on January 04, 2011 at 07:43 AM

Good tilt & I like the camera angle. Tempted to call it edge Erskine but it's a draw.

Posted by playmkr278 on January 05, 2011 at 12:31 AM

I also think Rupp would not have called it quits if it were an indoor game.

Posted by drew2colleen on January 02, 2011 at 08:23 PM

Gotta love when big punches are thrown even if they dont land. Very entertaining fight in front of 65,000 hockey loving fans!

toe - toe ol' time hockey

Two tuff dudes slugging it out. These punks who say Rupp did a roberto duran should lose up the skates put down their cheese beefs with fries and try this. Great scrap.

Posted by RV_camper on January 03, 2011 at 03:03 PM

Great Fight!! I really liked how the two of them stood toe to toe and let the rights fly. Both guys did well in front of a national audience. I'me calling it a draw. Props to both fighters for working hard and Erskine for showing the respect to Rupp after he got poked in the eye.

Posted by JustinL611 on January 01, 2011 at 09:25 PM

Great fight, had to give it a 9.

Posted by metz87 on January 01, 2011 at 09:26 PM

So a guy is ether winng a fight or it is a clear draw, then at the end of the fight he stops fighting. I saw that the other guy stop throwing punches as well as they both got tired or were happy with the results of the fight. I say this fight is a draw. I can not see giving the win here to Erskine.

Posted by JohnL09 on January 02, 2011 at 07:44 PM

Both got some great punches in

Posted by stich on January 04, 2011 at 04:42 AM

John Erskine is a bigtime heavyweight that can throw big bombs, he would definitely be a candidate for #1 heavy if he fought more but the coaching staff doesn't want him sitting in the box because he is a very good defenseman who logs alot of minutes.

Posted by ThrowdownSJ408 on January 01, 2011 at 10:33 PM

great scrap two big guys throwing them~!

Posted by Bluetiedown44 on January 02, 2011 at 12:11 AM

Rupp and Erskine line up in a good old punch in the face contest. Very even until Erskine slips to ice, but he quickly recovers. Nice rights by a each with a few sweater jabs. Draw, even if Rupp hadn't lost his contact, might have been a pretty even fight. Good showing by both big guys. Loved the fight, Bettman was probably fretting in his luxury box, but this is the real game. Look at the stands, no one was going to bathroom or concessions during the fight. Fans enjoy it.

Posted by evgenimalkin71 on February 04, 2011 at 03:39 PM

go rupp

Posted by mckees2006 on January 05, 2011 at 10:01 PM

maybe a draw.....but I dont give points for pussy jabs with the hand holding jersey.......wtf! I dont know who started that crap but broadstreet bullies rolling on floor laughing at that!

Posted by Paul_from_NoVa on January 02, 2011 at 08:52 PM

Erskine inflicted hidden damage with his holding hand - Rupp should consider a tighter sweater - several smart jabs/uppercuts, the last one of which led Rupp to suggest an end to it. Loved John's prompt springing back to his feet after a helmet shot. Rupp later suggested neither guy had inflicted any damage, although he had some skinned knuckles. Will look very nice on 24/7, with full sound effects and refs offering coaching points...

Posted by dsenchak on January 02, 2011 at 04:25 PM

That's a lot of people to watch a decent bout.

Posted by Wierdo_11 on January 02, 2011 at 11:24 PM

This is one of those classic vote for your home team player. How is it that erskine has big lead in scoring the bout. Neither took the other out. Erskine was the only one to stumble. It should be a draw if anything.

Posted by Double Nickels on January 02, 2011 at 05:49 PM

Were they each trying to break their hands?

Posted by PAfightsfan on January 03, 2011 at 08:17 AM

Two big guys going toe to toe...in a fight that close....if one guy goes down and is let back up...the other guy wins. You Caps fans who picked Erskine are biased morons.

Posted by dogace on January 02, 2011 at 12:17 PM

great fight! draw! how can people sit here and rip rupp for the end? like to see some of these idiots on here throw down,whatever.. the guy had a problem with his eye, lifes more important! great scrap though, a winter classic fo sure

Posted by bunkerman on January 02, 2011 at 12:41 AM

Sedfan correct they said Rupps contact was sideways in his eye. Good tilt.

Posted by jhurl on January 26, 2011 at 12:28 PM

its the capitols they cant wibn fights cuz they have a fag leading their team. the man known as dickface so rupp wins because he does

Posted by zonahockeyfan on January 02, 2011 at 11:39 PM

Rupp's a douche

Posted by Detroit_Caps on January 02, 2011 at 08:04 AM

STOP! STOP! STOP! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GIVE (RU)UP with the tap out despite figthing on a slip n slide Erk caught him and Ruup quit! hehehehe. . . Ignore the Hens fans vote, they would say Rodney King won if he was wearing a Pens jersey. . . Erkenstien with the most damage done, . . well just see if Rupp is up for a rematch(ha!)

when it comes to toe to toe combat in a bout,Erskine makes good comebacks and juss goes toe to toe....WINNER JOHN ERSKINE.

Posted by tattooedkingpin on January 03, 2011 at 01:25 PM

edge Erskine

Posted by hal29 on January 01, 2011 at 10:44 PM

a lot of misses but erskine landed a couple nice shots with two nice jabs hook and a jersey jab, rupp seemed to land one but not sure if it was a clean shot but erskine was the better of the two who were swinging widely and hoping that maybe some would could connect, decent showing I gave this a 6. rupp didn't get a poke in the eye or injured, he caught a jersey jab that hurt him a little it is cold and those punches can sting.....still a clear win to erskine

Posted by TAZDEVIL on February 11, 2011 at 05:04 PM

Big John for sure... The fight started out good and then Rupp called mercy! Probably a good idea. Big John stores alot of big hay makers in those pipes and it looks like at the end Rupp wasnt willing to eat any of them.

Posted by LA KING FANATIC on January 04, 2011 at 11:42 AM

A win to Erskine only because at the end Rupp was dazed and wanting no more... Nice bout and really close

Posted by canamrugby on January 03, 2011 at 08:23 PM

Looked like Rupp threw in the towel and asked for help?

Posted by tyrone on January 01, 2011 at 10:38 PM

Wow, 70k cheering fans. And outdoors too. Erskine wins as Ruppster throws in the towel.

Posted by Jellyczar on May 06, 2017 at 01:10 PM

Erskine get the win as Rupp throws in the towel and taps out in a spirited bout.

Posted by mpagano22 on January 02, 2011 at 09:00 AM

i dont know what you idiots that picked Rupp were watching, but Rupp quit. Close fight giving the win to the Big E.

Posted by staceyb on January 01, 2011 at 10:40 PM

Great bout in high definition for a national television audience. I thought Erskine was out of it early but he came back to win. Rupp might have been doing the Roberto Duran "No mas" litany at the end and can you blame him?

Posted by bruins rule on January 02, 2011 at 08:17 AM

erskine gets the win in this fight.

Posted by cmshort11 on January 06, 2011 at 03:52 AM

Erskine is frightening when he gets that right hand cannon going. Scored it a TKO due to the verbal submission by Rupp. Oh sweet jesus how i wish they had kept Erskine in Dallas.

Posted by nyrhky21 on January 03, 2011 at 03:08 AM

edge erskine but props to both..so much better watching these two fight rather than carcillo and thornton..these two just went straight at it and started throwing bombs in front of 70,000 people, gotta love it..definitely could pass as a heavyweight bout

Posted by mctuttle on January 01, 2011 at 09:48 PM

Equal fight until Rupp tapped out do to what I think was a poked eye but it was unintentional by Erskine. I like how the fight stopped the minute it was imbalanced due to just bad luck. One taps, the other is professional and ceases.

Posted by fernben8 on January 02, 2011 at 12:10 PM

Great fight...! Liked the way Erskine fell and got up and kept throwing, never lost a beat. Both throwing back and forth with good intensity, Giving the edge to Erskine as I felt Rupp faded towards the end and initiated to stop the fight. Props to the camera crew...nice angle, Way to start the New Year boys !

Posted by Soulcrusher84 on January 03, 2011 at 01:49 PM

Erskine wins...Pens suck

Posted by breaklance on January 01, 2011 at 11:36 PM

Great fight for the WC. Wasn't a bunch of hugging it out. Thought Rupp got the 2 best shots of the fight, that knocked Erksine down, but "the lumberjack" rebounded quickly and seemed to have gotten the most hits in. I'm leaning towards draw for both an even fight and another great WC moment Also I'm told that Rupp asked to stop the fight because he lost a contact during the fight. No idea what his vision is like but for my not being able to clearly see things until they are 5" from my face would certainly discourage me to fight too.

Posted by nhl enforcer on January 02, 2011 at 08:54 PM

Erskine wins this spirited bout with Rupp. Gotta love the way Erskine gets up and just keeps on throwing the big blows.

Posted by dingdingding on January 02, 2011 at 08:06 AM

not sure about the contact lense excuse but did read rupp lost a couple teeth. erskine win.

Posted by seacritt on January 03, 2011 at 09:22 AM

Edge to Erskine. Great old time hockey fight.

Posted by m4rine77 on January 03, 2011 at 03:37 PM

rupp surrenders. win erskine. good fight as always when erskine is involved

Posted by sedinfan on January 01, 2011 at 11:55 PM

WOW, i like watching Erskine throw them. Old time fighter win or lose, just stands in there and goes toe to toe. Nothing serious with Rupp guys. According to the after game show, he got poked in the eye and had his contact screwed up or something.

Posted by BrettB on January 03, 2011 at 10:21 AM

Erskine always has bad intentions when he throws the right hand! Loved the jersey lefts that had Rupp begging for an ending. Great scrap on network tv.

Posted by Sportaholic on January 02, 2011 at 09:13 PM

great fight. not too many Caps match up well with big mike rupp. he had johnny down early but erskine rallied to win the fight, just barely. and the best part of the fight may have been that it occurred down in the corner where the camera was already covering the live action: i hate when fights start off camera. i still wonder what happened to rupp to force him to stop the fight on his own...

Posted by kinga101 on January 02, 2011 at 01:04 AM

pretty good fight for a winter classic! lot of bombs thrown but not many landed. erskine with the edge here but rupp hung in there pretty well.

Posted by tocchetblue on January 02, 2011 at 08:24 PM

great fight erskine easy winner

Posted by The_Superhoo on January 02, 2011 at 03:32 PM

Erskine was losing until he went to a knee and popped back up. Huge cahones on that. Rupp tapped out.

Posted by MACMAN214 on January 02, 2011 at 04:45 PM

Rupp early, Erskine the rest of the way...Rupp quit..verbally boo Hooing on National TV...Crosby must be rubbing off on him.Erskine easily the edge.

Posted by lb1631 on January 02, 2011 at 10:06 AM

That was awesome hockey fight. Giving it to Erskine for coming back at the end plus not throwing them when Rupp had his eye problem.

Posted by GarthButcher on January 03, 2011 at 05:30 PM

Wonderful! Erskine is a real beauty, nice application of The Code during the holiday season.

Posted by Snow-ape on January 04, 2011 at 10:57 AM

Great bout... I love how Big John stuck in it after going down... both traded good blows. Edge to Erskine for landing more shots, using the jab, and because Rupp tapped out.

Posted by BigRob1 on January 01, 2011 at 10:36 PM

The cheer of 70,000 give it a 10 in my book. Great fight and great game as well! Good job NHL!!!

Posted by graserk on January 01, 2011 at 09:16 PM

Erskine with the edge cause Rupp wanted out.

Posted by bustin on January 01, 2011 at 09:05 PM

Rupp i thought could have had the fight till he took a couple of close jabs then he wanted out... or his mommy? LOL

Posted by Ajaxechkin on January 18, 2011 at 08:44 PM

Great Fight! Haymakers! Erskinian Hook leaves Penguin Beak Ajar and asking for stoppage...Erskine Rules as he stops without Referees having to go break it up first. Rupp great showing as well and thanks for the Entertainment both gladiators!

Posted by RegalsFTW on January 02, 2011 at 01:53 AM

One of the better fights of the year I'd say. Not every punch landed but the ones that did were really strong. The WInter Classic, national tv, both these guys were fired and it really showed in intensity of the fight. Rupp did great, but W to Erskine for sure.

Posted by norm6269 on January 02, 2011 at 11:10 AM

great fight during the best game of the regular season, Erskine lands some solid rights away from the camera angle, Rupp does as well, but Erskine is tough as nails and takes and gives more than Rupp, and Rupp taps, Erskine win.

Posted by FHgrad99 on January 02, 2011 at 09:29 AM

Pretty spirited fight. I called it a draw because it was even before Rupp's contact got messed up. If that didn't happen, Rupp probably would have continued to fight.

Posted by Zarley Z on January 02, 2011 at 12:09 PM

No big shots here but alot thrown. Liked that they both stood in there and didnt do any jersey grabbin

Posted by illukka on January 02, 2011 at 05:55 AM

f├╝ckin great fight. a classic draw if there ever was one. another goodie involving erskine this season- he can still take em and give em

Posted by buzzgun2000 on January 02, 2011 at 01:20 PM

Great tilt by two big fellas chucking away . Loved the camera angle. A true draw right down the middle. Erskine does not win because Rupp needs to stop with the contact issue. I know that Erskine is a favorite of the reviewers on this site and justifiably so, but if he asked the officials to stop it, most people would give him the benefit of the doubt. In response to yngblonde1, Rupp was a clear winner against Gaustad last year. There are more to be sure, but that one is fresh in my mind.

Posted by durka on January 28, 2011 at 10:23 AM

tht was nice.

Posted by Boone2511 on January 01, 2011 at 10:59 PM

Great fight..definatly a draw with both guys going like crazy then just tiring out at the end

Posted by Radiotalker on January 02, 2011 at 01:59 AM

Rupp knocks Erskine to his knees, but then wants the fight to end. I'll call it a draw.

Posted by Kid Roberts on January 19, 2011 at 08:21 PM

Rupp lost a contact or something that is why he quit......Draw.

Posted by JBox3 on January 03, 2011 at 08:26 PM

Great fight! I would have liked to seen Round 2, but I guess that will have to wait. I called it a draw and an 8. The camera angle on the fight was perhaps the only one NBC got right all game. Horrible work on a showcase game. Boo!

Posted by Oil Can Henry on January 01, 2011 at 11:10 PM

Some BIG swings with some Big misses. A bit of an edge to Erskine, though,....Rupp seemed to call-things-off at the end.

Posted by EleaticStranger on January 11, 2011 at 04:43 PM

Good to see a fight in the Winter Classic. Lots of wild punches thrown but not much hitting the target. Erskine got closer, so he gets the win.

Posted by chad420 on January 03, 2011 at 01:48 PM

win Eric the Red

Posted by hok1n on January 01, 2011 at 10:29 PM

I wanna see Big Johnny E and Colton Orr Open up the Bomb doors and LET ER GO!!!!!!! One Of em's goin to NAKA-SAKI :) Ps He's an ex Knight......Not Me

Posted by Langway on March 10, 2011 at 12:07 PM

Great fight. Erskine is turning in to a marquee fighter. Rupp had to bail out because of the shot to his eye, edge Erskine.
