hey battle axe: How about I pummel your face---then after im done walk away. YOu are the winner. According to you. Have you ever fought? Played hockey. They were both exhausted--and most guys just go down.....downie walked away...doesnt mean he lost. The fight is won or lost based on a lot of things. This was a struggle that had no winner.

Posted by RR20 on February 11, 2008 at 12:00 PM

this was way too close to call both sides got in a few punches here, and there. downie on the end of a long shift obiviously too tired to continue.

Posted by krflyers12 on February 11, 2008 at 10:40 PM

Downie did a good job battling for most of the fight and taking the hits from Ruutu before gettin his few shots in at the end. He shouldn't have ended it like that but obviously he was exhausted and it was ballsy enough to take on Ruutu in the first place when he was that tired. If he was such a puss he wouldn't have dropped 'em in the first place.

Posted by boyer on February 12, 2008 at 09:14 AM

Only comment I can add is that it would have been better if Ruutu had held on with a bit more vigor at the end of the fight. He didn't really run after Downie; they both looked a little tired. One can see Downie ask that the fight not be broken up with about 10 seconds remaining - he must have wanted one more round house then skated.

draw

Posted by Flyone on March 23, 2008 at 10:40 AM

Downie was at the end of a shift. Ruttu came into the hit with the elbow up, not penalty worthy, but up. Pretty lame fight. Downie was obviously tired, not sure about Ruttu but he seemed tired as well. Loved how Downie just skated away when he was done. DRAW.

Posted by dayne33 on February 11, 2008 at 05:51 PM

Draw both landed some shots but nothing major, I dont really see how u can say either guy won?????

Posted by dmckearn on February 12, 2008 at 01:39 AM

Draw. Ruutu and Downie both got some ok shots in, but nothing special. Granted, didn't like too much that Downie just turned his back, BUT, come on guys - the fight was over, both guys were tired, plus Ruutu certainly didn't go after him when he let go. EVERYONE loves to hate the Flyers.

Posted by chl37 on February 11, 2008 at 07:37 AM

hillarious. downie at the end finally realized that his visor had come off for the first time since he came out of his mother's womb, and then suddenly turned and skated off from the fight to go find it. puke.

Posted by ghosthorse08 on February 11, 2008 at 09:45 PM

This is a no-brainer. Forfeit = loss

Posted by Icanstillgo on February 12, 2008 at 12:54 AM

Downie would have won had he stuck around but he showed his Flyer yellow and...well you saw it for yourself.

Posted by jim_young on February 11, 2008 at 09:30 AM

I'm a Flyers hater, BUT, I've got to say, Both of them were tired. Downie knew it was over and so did Ruutu. Everyone is calling Downie a pu$$y for skating away. Ruutu sure as heck didn't put any effort into hanging on to him. They both knew they were done. An "OK" throw by both. DRAW.

Posted by Juha82 on February 11, 2008 at 08:54 AM

They did it well. A loong fight but not great. Downie landed a good punches in the end but then runs away. A draw.

Posted by steel1 on February 12, 2008 at 11:04 PM

"Holy crap I am in a fight without my visor on, I better get oughta here".....Can anyone from Philly share what Stevie said to the press about running from a fight?

Posted by chris_mcallister on February 11, 2008 at 08:44 AM

Draw in an entertaining pest bout.

Posted by Brashearfan on February 11, 2008 at 07:40 AM

As a Flyers fan, i'm not happy when fighter pulls away like Downie did. He did pretty good for being the smaller guy right till the end when he bailed. I'm giving it a draw. It could have been a win for Downie if he finished.

Posted by dansal55 on February 11, 2008 at 06:39 AM

I went into this saying, "Okay, try to be fair to Downey". C'mon! If Flyer fans saw someone on another team just skate away from his opponent they would be screaming "PU$$Y"! Unbelievable. As far as the fight goes, I thought it was Ruutu right up until the end, but Downie got some late blows in so I said a draw. How some of you say it's a clear win Downie, well, what are you watching?

Posted by kevinstevens on February 11, 2008 at 11:49 AM

Kind of a disjointed fight. I'm giving it a draw. Hartnell, get your jheri curl ass away from the guys that are taking the gloves off.

Posted by mikebflorida on February 11, 2008 at 10:14 AM

Good fight between 2 of the biggest pukes in the league. The announcers are AWFUL. Homer doesn't even quite describe them, more like slurpers would be better. Anyway, good fight, both got some good shots in and Downie skates away which was kind of funny actually.

Posted by swirvin on February 13, 2008 at 11:14 PM

close scrap, i give it a draw. as for downie skating away, did anyone here see ruutu chase him down? nah, he was as dead tired as downie and the fight was OVER.

Posted by BruinLeader on February 12, 2008 at 04:56 PM

Pretty good bout.

even fight

Posted by merle johnson on February 11, 2008 at 11:36 AM

Both fighters got in decent shots,I dont know whats up with Downie skating away,Rutuu is the much bigger man. So the smaller Downie, like him or not, held his own..DRAW!!

Posted by curtisinpa on February 11, 2008 at 02:04 PM

So Penguin fans are bigger homers than Flyer fans? Downie ( 5' 10" 189lbs) squares off against Ruutu (6' 2" 195lbs). The size difference is noticeable as they tie up. Ruutu starts by wisely ripping Downie's face shield off. Downie throws the opening punches with a flurry combination consisting of right hooks and uppercut that landed flush on the chin of Ruutu. Ruutu, feeling his strategy of wearing his opponent down, has succeeds in answers Downies flurry of punches with his own. Landing a straight right, & throwing some right and left hooks. Downie wisely closes the distant between the two exhausted warriors. Staying active so the officials don't think the fight is over, Downie throws a few shoulder shrugs into Ruutu's face. Rutuu then answers Downie's shrugs with a haymaker that seems to miss but leaves Downie in an awkward position. Ruutu capitalizes and throws a few "rabbit punches" to the back of Downie's head. Both men now stand, arms outstretched, hands clinched to the opposing fighters jersey, desperately trying to get an little advantage by throwing short jab's at each other. Ruutu tries for the hail marry with an overhand right, missing, leaving his body, and more importantly face wide open for Downie to take advantage of, and he does just that, landing 3 vicious right hooks. At this point both men have be in a long fight. Downie realizing he had the upper hand at that point op's to skate away. In my opinion, this was hilarious, others, however, think him skating away was forfeiting the bout. I disagree. Downie, being exhausted, and getting the last punches of the fight in, leaves on a good note. It does however leave me with an unfinished feeling. Downie was winning the war but did not give Ruutu the chance to answers Downies last flurry. Therefore I would call this fight a Draw.

Posted by Leafs2006 on February 11, 2008 at 06:24 AM

Wow, and Downie never hit Ruutu from behind, or sucker punched him, Downie is scum, im not a Ruutu fan, but i give him the decision. Where was Cote? Did he take my advice to stay on the bench? Maybe 3 - 4 shifts? I guess he remembered the beating George gave him, good choice Cote.

kill each other - dirtbags

Posted by butchie23 on February 11, 2008 at 08:49 AM

I'm sorry, Downie is just a scum, low life of this earth and doesn't belong in this league.

Posted by rupprupp29 on February 11, 2008 at 05:41 PM

It was a draw until Downie chickened out. Decision to Ruutu.

Posted by HeyImIrish on February 11, 2008 at 10:23 AM

If you watched the game you can see that Downie initiated that fight...then skates away during it and you guys say it was because he was tired? Please if he was that tired he wouldn't have started the fight. Downie is a lowlife player and always has been....he didnt knock Ruutu out like he thought he would so he skated away rather then take his lumps like a man.

Posted by guitarguy1727 on February 12, 2008 at 12:18 AM

Wow.. this one was basically a draw but I have to give the edge to Ruutu. You can't just skate away from a fight like Downie did, especially if you picked it to begin with. If you were so tired maybe you shouldn't have gotten into a fight with Jarkko. Just fall if you're too tired to continue, it's just a bit more respectable than just skating away

Posted by Clark75 on February 12, 2008 at 08:10 PM

Downie is such a pussy. He thinks he wins the fight because he gets a couple of shots in then skates away. Who just skates away in the middles of a fight? A pussy, that's who. Hey BillH, I re-considered calling Downie a Pussy, and I've decided he's still a pussy and always will be. Downie I hope you read this. Can't wait for March 11th and 12th ya little punk. Your gonna get your ass kicked.

Posted by Avlos on February 13, 2008 at 05:49 PM

downie is such a pu$$y

Posted by shack on February 11, 2008 at 12:27 PM

I'll call it a slight edge for Ruutu. He gave few solid punches at the middle of the fight and Downie kind of quit the whole fight.

Posted by aces50 on February 29, 2008 at 10:03 AM

Downie ran away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by aerotunes on February 12, 2008 at 09:56 AM

Ruutu had to take Downie's helmet and face shield off before the scrap. Downie is like the rest of the cheap shot Flyers who really stink up the place. Let's go DEVILS ....

Posted by lakingsfan19 on February 11, 2008 at 02:07 PM

puss downie couldn't keep the visor on this time.. ruutu takes it off for him.. win ruutu

Posted by bigpucks on February 11, 2008 at 08:21 PM

Downie is a punk and a coward. Standard Flyer crap. Ruutu was about to decapitate him.

Posted by DetroitIan on February 11, 2008 at 08:17 PM

Downie is such a puss. Ruutu gets the win here.

Posted by alekseyanov on February 11, 2008 at 06:46 PM

now that was a fight. Ruutu style is to let the Dumbass run out of gas. like a boxing match. Then you make him regret he ever droped the mitts. And as for downie He started the fight and could not FINISH it. thats normal for a P.O.S pest.

Posted by Joe Mack on February 11, 2008 at 02:33 PM

downie better turn in his testicles for improper use AND misconduct. ruutu always lets his opponents tire out . he controlled the entire fight from beginning to end. thats just his style. he lets your arms get tired and then unloads. ruutu for the win by a much wider margin then is evident from only watching this fight. oh and a tko as well for downie forgetting to let go of his purse when he dropped the gloves.

Posted by nossagog on February 11, 2008 at 04:09 PM

Was expecting more, but didn't get it. Ruutu had the ad early, then Downie late. The refs were going to let them go, then Downie forfeited and walked away.

Posted by George16Parros on February 12, 2008 at 02:02 AM

who skates away from a fight they aren't doin too bad in for once. it was a draw until visor boy downie skated away. what a wuss

Posted by beter06 on February 11, 2008 at 02:02 PM

ok ill be the first to admit, ruutu isnt the best fighter, god knows he's not gonna back down from a guy like steve downie. but ill aslo be the first to say, the winner of this bout was deff. Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuutu! free advice for downie- dont start a fight and try to back away vag. you then proceeded to have ruu take off your helmet for you, cause of the visor,,if i were him id of smashed that visor in your face and send you to the lockers, and anyone who DOESNT consider downie a complete and utter puss is either a lowsey flyers fan and didnt watch the same fight we all did.

Posted by jasontjames on February 11, 2008 at 12:18 PM

Ruutu get the call. Not that great of a bout. Ruutu's style is not my preference, but it is effective. Thumbs up to Downie for being willing to go at the end of his shift.

Posted by joesomebody on February 11, 2008 at 08:11 AM

Posted by justinthebull on February 11, 2008 at 03:32 PM

Uhh, yeah, the announcers are homers. They're the FSN Pittsburgh announcers. You think they're going to pull for the Flyers? And yes, Steve Downie is a chickensh!t.

Posted by LaRocky on February 11, 2008 at 07:10 PM

I have played hockey. I have watched hockey for 30 years. I have NEVER seen someone do what Downie did at the end of the fight. Dude, just don't fight. There's plenty of players who don't fight. You need to join their ranks. Especially if you're going to play in Philly, a team known for it's tough reputation.

Posted by Cugine37 on February 12, 2008 at 11:44 AM

Downie sits down to pee, he ran away like a little sissy girl. If he didn't he would've got knocked out. He better just stick to fighting ryan stone, Ruutu is out of his league. He is as soft as a roll of downie, the quicker picker upper.

Posted by the-editor on February 13, 2008 at 05:54 AM

Like they say...anytime Downie gets a fist to the face - an angel gets his wings. And to the guy here who says that anyone who thinks Downie is a p***sy should reconsider it, I say, yes - I have reconsidered it and I now change my doubtful "thinks he is" to a definitive "100% knows he is" - thanks for the suggestion pal.

Posted by Riomouse911 on February 12, 2008 at 09:34 PM

Downie was in over his head.. I guess when the guy's looking at you it's harder to cheap shot him. JR wins it 10-8.

Posted by norald on February 11, 2008 at 09:11 PM

How can a fight be over when Jarko is still throwing punches.Downie thru three punches and was getting ready to get beat on some more,so he quit.Pretty much the mo of all Filthadelphia players,if i can't hit you from behind i don't want none.

Posted by ETR on February 11, 2008 at 11:04 PM

what a chicken shyt Downie is. Cue the Monty Python tape: RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!

Posted by Super Mario 66 on February 11, 2008 at 08:10 PM

This was a close fight, however, Downie skated away before it was finished! You can't give a guy the win if he leaves before the dance is over. I've seen a lot of Ruutu's fights and he is a great finisher, ask Darcy Tucker. I think Downie realized he was out of gas and going to get tagged if it went any longer. The Penguin's seem to be winning all of the fights against the Flyers this year........who would of thunk it!

Posted by mikeuhf on February 11, 2008 at 12:05 PM

Downie didn't like that Rutuu checked him along the boards. So, he followed Rutuu and challenged him. Both guys were on the ice for 1:01 before the fight. So, it was pretty good that they lasted that long. Downie just can't get the win - quitters never win. What the heck was that idiot Hartnell trying to do before the fight?

Posted by Boogeyman2383 on February 11, 2008 at 10:23 PM

The Battle of the two most dirty players. its fun to watch u guys battle on whos the better fighter. hell with them both, they are cheap and dirty

Posted by SirYohans on February 12, 2008 at 02:52 PM

U know what's pisssing me off. This "end of shift" excuse u see more & more of. U boneheads are telling me u now have the ability to calculate every single players "ice time" Right? When I know it takes a team of statisticians, "one assigned to each player, prolly" in order to compute that stuff. I ain't mentioning any names... But it seems like that only comes up when certain teams play. It couldn't possibly be your HOMER ANNOUNCER making that excuse, "b4 the fight even starts," just in case your guy loses... And about this Downie "quitting" vs. "the fight was over" arguement... So a guy waves off a ref because he has 2 more punches left in him. But then "HE" decides that because "HE'S SPENT," that the fight is over. Who cares if your opponent might have some punches of his own left to offer. THAT'S QUITTING PEOPLE! If he would just hang on & then let go & skate away, I can see your arguement. But the fact that he threw 2 & then bolted makes him look so shady. P.S.-I don't wanna get on Philly fans, because few of 'em are mad cool & I can see from a "Philly fan perspective" u can see some of Downie's fight antics as entertaining. BUT SPEAKING JUST TO THOSE WHO HAVE FOUGHT, Whouldn't some of this stuff, being done against u, make u wanna kill the twirp?

Posted by Blackhawk23 on February 11, 2008 at 03:53 PM

I will give this close bout to Jarkko couse Downie called it quites. I have to admit I am not a fan of either of these guys, but they both can throw when they have to. Its just to bad that one of the NhL's heavyweights dont get a hold of each of them.

Posted by bluto1313 on February 11, 2008 at 06:31 PM

It did my heart good to see the little sissy quit. The whole arena howled when downie tried so hard to get away! Almost felt bad for the flyer fans. Not quite, but almost. They had to have been embarrassed. I laughed my ass off. Philly losers since 75

Posted by tlahue on February 11, 2008 at 04:29 PM

Downie scated away from Ruutu like a little girl, afraid he was going to get his butt kicked...very disappointing. Just adds to Ruutu's mistique as a pretty good fighter.

Posted by groucho on February 15, 2008 at 09:08 PM

Hey Flyer fans, to quit fighting typically means that you have lost the fight. Downie skated away quicker than Scott Hamilton. Obviously he saw the 3 finger shocker coming and high-tailed his pu$$y a$$ out of there. Broad Street Pu$$ies.

Posted by Fightmare on February 11, 2008 at 05:34 AM

Steve "skirt" Downie. Ruutu rock Downie`s World. Ruutu is amused player.

downie is a bitch...he just skates away after throwing them on ruutu

Posted by jealeman on February 11, 2008 at 03:26 PM

Not so brave without your visor protecting you, are you Downie? Ruutu must have heard our cries for the visor to come off. Good entertaining scrap, but Downie walking away shows what we all know....he's a wuss.

Posted by cabsf15e on February 12, 2008 at 06:06 PM

Slight edge to Ruutu because he caught Downie with a solid right that stunned him pretty good midway through the fight, and then Ruutu landed a good left which had Downie on the defensive and tired. However, as the fight went on, Downie made a good comeback and did land two or three good shots at the end, but to just walk away from the fight like he did...YGBSM!! Downie needs to lose the visor...yesterday!!

Posted by bigredbaer on February 11, 2008 at 05:52 PM

Downie is a pansy. Don't take a man on if you can't finish the fight!

Posted by BattleAxe13 on February 11, 2008 at 05:44 PM

How can any of you morons vote draw or in favor of Downie. Downie the girlscout brownie gave up, he ran away, that is called forfeit. At the end of a war, the side that stops fighting . . . uh loses! This site is really going down the crapper fast.

Posted by brianski71 on February 13, 2008 at 07:50 AM

dowine is soft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Sasky001 on February 11, 2008 at 08:24 PM

Downie ran away as soon as he had no visor to hide behind.

Posted by RustyTrombone on February 11, 2008 at 10:46 AM

Downie had a good flurry at the end that made the fight look more like a draw, but because he walked away like a puss I'm giving it to Ruutu. Ruutu outlasted him, and throwing in the towel is equal to a loss.

Posted by MackMittens on February 11, 2008 at 12:52 PM

Downie didn't get in anything besides a couple of openly light dollar store haymakers over a minute in, then he ran away like a sissy. Ruutu with the win.

Posted by hfxbob on February 11, 2008 at 01:36 PM

Downie is a joke. He'll blindside guys with hits to the head and he'll give cheap shots all over the ice. Now it's time to fight.....let go and skate away. Dumbass.

Posted by Jake98 on February 11, 2008 at 02:33 AM

Ruutu controlled the fight.

Posted by sedras on February 12, 2008 at 05:43 AM

Downie totally chickened out! I can't believe that! He got tired and afraid he'd lose or get hurt so he ran away. Wow. I don't know if I've ever seen that. Doesn't exactly inspire your teammates! I've seen guys mutually end fights, but Ruutu was still wiling to slug it out, that must be why Downie skated away so quickly. I'd say that qualifies as a TKO with the odd twist that Downie called the fight himself.

Posted by colyn on February 11, 2008 at 07:33 PM

good fight except the end!

Posted by grimson on February 11, 2008 at 05:19 AM

RUUTU Is the MAN. I know alot of people don't like him cuz he is an agitator and gets under your skin all that sh!t. So what, it's what he does. The league will always have one. WIN RUUTU. Nice Strategy. LOL Downie just said, I can't throw no more and skated away. That was kinda funny. HAHA.

Posted by gmathiak123 on February 12, 2008 at 12:11 AM

Downie wins. He was at the end of a shift and still managed to throw some powerful haymakers.

Posted by FlyersDosage on February 11, 2008 at 05:54 AM

Downie is one tough kid...he landed all the punches in this fight...Tofu...errr...Ruutu just gave him shots to the back of the neck/head. Easy to call this one despite the lack of consistent action....Downie.

Posted by brennank on February 11, 2008 at 09:01 AM

It figures all the Flyer haters take Ruutu! Even if you hate a player he can still whoop your A** in a fight! I guess the 2 punches he lands counts more then the 10 that Downie landed! It is funny that the only 2 players other teams try to fight are Downie and Cote! Not the biggest guys but the craziest! Try and pick on Hatcher, Smith, Richards, Hartnell and Vandermeer too! They will all drop the gloves and they all have been around 3 more years!! In 3 years Downie and Cote will be the 1 to 2 punch for the Flyers! But they are still both rookies and no one gives them any credit! F the Pens, Battle A** 13 and all his flaming buddies! IF RUUTU would have keep throwing he would have not stopped!! But you do not hit girls and players who do not fight back!

Posted by drop_the_gloves on February 11, 2008 at 07:10 AM

Downie controlled the beginning of the fight, Ruutu got a couple of shots in the middle of the fight, and then Downie landed a couple at the end. Edge to Downie. Laughed my ass off watching Downie just skate away before he fell over from exhaustion.

Posted by Gunslinger on February 12, 2008 at 12:01 PM

Two cheap shot artists go at it in an okay fight. I give the edge to Downie because I am biased(I'm a Flyer fan) but objectively its a draw.

Posted by billy jack on February 11, 2008 at 02:53 PM

downies punches hurt more then rutuus so i give the win to downie.

Posted by JABUSHFSU on February 11, 2008 at 11:08 PM

downie won this fight. so what he skated away. its not like ruutu was still trying to fight. ruutu is one of the pens tuff guys. he did get beat up, but lost to a 20 yr old smart ass. i love the skate away . i dont understand how no one things that is fight . downie told the ref 's the fight stops when he says. p.s. downie was at the end of a shift and still got more and better punches in .....get over it babies!!!

Posted by knarfage on February 11, 2008 at 06:20 AM

Ruutu or tutu had to stay close in on Downie or he would have had his clock cleaned. If your gonna run someone, especially Downie or Cote expect consequences, box Downie don't clutch and grab, but if you try to "fight" Downie you'll find yourself facedown out cold from a solid right ( or left ). Penguins are playing "typical euro" hockey.

Posted by BroadStBully32 on February 11, 2008 at 05:29 PM

they were both exhausted and it looked like ruutu was holdin on to downie at the start and not tryin to throw, just tiring downie out even more, personally, i laughed when he skated away at the end, he waved off the refs so he could get in one last flurry and then he just turned his back, i'd like to see these 2 go again at the start of a shift

Posted by Fletcher29 on February 11, 2008 at 06:29 AM

lol "the ruutu push" holy homerism downie still wins : )

Posted by iluvdonuts on February 12, 2008 at 06:46 PM

Downie got in the better shots and controlled the fight. He was tired and called it off at the end, but Ruutu didn't seem too interested in keeping it going. Ruutu thru some good punches, but didn't take control enough for me to call it for him. He just sat back and waited and didn't do much.

How is it that Ruutu is leading by 20%??? Downie' s last three punches (especially to Ruutu's chin) were by far better than anything Ruutu threw/landed. As far as everyone here saying downie ran away from the fight, c'mon. That is an argument that makes absolutely no sense. Remember that we just watch hockey as opposed to them actually playing hockey. Anyone here calling Steve Downie a p*ssy should re-consider their comment.

Posted by c3po on February 11, 2008 at 12:31 PM

Ruutu the voted winner, are you peolpe crazy he got a draw at best Downie landed the better punches. Downie never ran away they fought for a minute and a half give it a break the fight was over.

Posted by DMills56 on February 11, 2008 at 06:33 PM

Anyone who calls Downie a puss for "running away" obviously didn't see him wave the linesman off so he could feed Ruutu a few more rights...the fight was over at that point anyway, what difference does it make if he lets go and skates away on his on or they just wait for the linesman to come in? Ruutu wasn't stopping him, anyway. Everybody's just looooves to hate the Flyers

Posted by Mouseman on February 11, 2008 at 03:26 AM

Win for Downie. Ruutu bores me to death.

Posted by mjb4fly on February 11, 2008 at 08:49 AM

The two were both tired But I got to think Downie Threw more Punches and definately did more Than Jarkko Next time they meet Ruutu won't be so lucky. I am getting tired of Jarkko, He was always a pain But he thinks he is tough because he has Laraque on his side

Posted by Sublimezx on February 12, 2008 at 03:36 PM

You people are pathetic! You find every excuse to hate the Flyers! Ruutu is a disgusting excuse for a hockey player. He has been a cheap shot in every level he has played in, INCLUDING the international level. Look it up. He cant fight and if you all had half a clue you would notice that he only goes with players smaller then him! Downie held his own, wont he fight and when they were finished they separated. Ruutu was the one the stopped, not Downie. Downie just had to turn a round and skate away, Ruutu didnt throw a punch for the last 30 seconds. You people are total idiots!

One of the toughest calls of the year, Downie got in the best punches, realizes he probably won it then breaks the coveted hockeyfight code of skating away BEFORE the refs break it up and AFTER he waived them off so he could score those nasty rights at the end. The punchstat awards it to Downie, but I know what we are all thinking (including some flyer fans who know the code as well as anybody) Downie wants to be hated more than Avery. I guess he figures it's some kind of accomplishment and he's making it look easy. I'm sure Ruutu and every Penguin fan (nobody else likes this hug 'em til they tire fighter either) that gave him a win here on principal and not punchstats will want a rematch here. Remember this, all fight fans, that there are well over 200 votes and counting on this one. Downie, for all his shenanigans, is making it interesting and is choosing his combatants carefully, and then severly pyssing them off. He knows what he's doing.

Wow. 50% of the vote to Ruutu for landing one punch. Downie landed two big shots to Ruutu's one. And he skated away because the fight was over. I bet most of you don't even have favorite teams, just a least favorite.

Good go for the rookie

Posted by Nightmare on February 11, 2008 at 11:51 AM

I'm giving a slight edge to Ruutu because he controlled the fight nicely according to his plan...could've given it a draw. I liked the tired rights Downie snuck in at the end before seperating.

How can anyone vote for Ruutu? Blindness runs amuck in Pburgh

Posted by mkjd1254 on February 11, 2008 at 05:31 PM

downie's the man.

Posted by sasso09 on February 11, 2008 at 10:21 AM

How is anyone giving this fight to ruutu? it's obvious you're only giving it to him because downie just skated away when he was done, downie CLEARLY won this fight, the first minute ruutu did absolutely nothing, and then threw maybe 3-4 rabbit punches that barely connected to the back of the head, then downie blast him twice in the face causing him to bleed then skates away... hell why am i expaining the proof is in the video.

Posted by simpdawg on February 11, 2008 at 03:09 PM

how can anyone call Downie a pussy? he is at the end of a shift, fights for over a minute, clearly wins the fight and because he skates away as the linesmen are about to come in he is a pussy? how can you justify that especially considering he is fighting Jarko Ruutu who skates off the ice after he challenges someone to drop the gloves which they do? i am not a fan of Steve Downie but at least vote on the fights based on performance in the fight insted of your opinion on something that happened in the preseason

Posted by Rebel Banker on February 11, 2008 at 07:05 PM

WIN DOWNEY!!! close fight but downey took the beginning and then came back at the end again... the skating away arguement is BS...the fight was over ruutuu hadn't thrown a punch in 30 seconds...he was waiting for the refs to jump in...

Posted by puttin on foil on February 23, 2008 at 12:09 AM

3 punches at end give it to Downie.

Posted by marinermoose38 on February 11, 2008 at 01:15 PM

Good scrap... I think Ruutu had the edge for most of it, but Downie finished very strong so I have to call it a draw

Posted by PitPens87 on February 13, 2008 at 02:59 PM

Downie was scared and ran from Ruutu.

Posted by Don Gorgon on February 11, 2008 at 10:43 AM

Another fight for Downie with the visor, at least this time it was removed. The late flurry by Downie doesn't erase the work by Rutuu early, especailly since Downie decided to pull away. Not a great fight.

Posted by kocurfan26 on February 13, 2008 at 10:35 PM

God i hate downie more and more everytime i see this bag of shiite play. skated away cause the poor baby was a wittle tired! or was it he was getting his ass handed to him. I cannot wait until Colton Orr gets his revenge against this coward for going after Fedor Tyutin.

Posted by snowboardinmatt on February 11, 2008 at 11:35 AM

I love how all the Flyers fans say Downie leaving was "funny." For us people with half a brain, that translates into "Someone on my favorite team is a pussy and left a fight so I'm gonna try and play it off as being funny." Please, if anyone else ran away from a fight you'd be all over them, and that's exactly what this was. RustyTrombone said it best, throwing in the towel is a loss. I'd say the fight was a draw, but Downie running away means Ruutu wins!

Posted by pberg on February 18, 2008 at 04:10 AM

Downey forfeited. Ruutu did not. Therefor Ruutu Wins. Jeez, I know some of you people are Philly morons, but this isn't subatomic physics, it's a fight.

Posted by STL13 on February 15, 2008 at 02:44 AM

Ruutu caught him at the end of a shift, rabbit punched (fairs fair though) and didn't overly dominate. I give this to Jark - without the ko.

Posted by bigdog2007 on February 11, 2008 at 08:10 AM

What a bitch goof Downie is. Skates away during fight= turtles. Another pussy like Tucker who can't take a clean hit!!! What a sad Philly Pussy.

Posted by poopies on February 11, 2008 at 11:10 AM

I like how Hartnell tried to get a shot in on Ruutu as he skated by. What a douche!

Posted by kovoi on February 14, 2008 at 03:44 PM

Downie gets Rutuu into it, then runs away after he's had enough. 'nough said.

Posted by biglite351 on February 11, 2008 at 08:17 AM

That has to be one of the oddest endings to a fight I have ever seen.

Posted by Nusquama on February 11, 2008 at 04:41 PM

ruutu looked like he was just getting started

Posted by nofx8881 on February 11, 2008 at 01:23 PM

Hilarious fight. They both landed their punches and Downie decides to leave when he gets tired. Ruutu landed some in the middle, but Downie came back towards the end and got a couple real good ones in. It could have really gone either way or been a draw, but I'll give the slight edge to Downie because he got a couple good ones in at the end and then skated away which was really, really funny.

Posted by adamfry on February 11, 2008 at 10:10 PM

Good fight - Downie slight edge for good punches at end of fight. Downie didn't run the fight was over, Ruutu didn't even have a hold of him any longer.

Posted by LLCOOLJSON on February 11, 2008 at 06:39 PM

I see lots of Flyer haters ....Downie with the victory....i thought the end was funny.....Quick question...i dont know if any of you were ever in a hockey fight...when you both have ahold of each others jersey ...if i was to let go wouldnt the other guy still have my jersey..i think so...so when downie let go tuuti fruuti also let go.....end of fight....

Posted by irishboybrian on February 11, 2008 at 04:36 PM

Downie over Fruit 2. It is a shame that the folks from the inferior city in Pennasylvania (Sh*ttsburgh) can not be objective. Always hating Philly and the Flyers when their city had trouble even supporting the team until Sidney Crosbaby came along.

Posted by scanz30 on February 11, 2008 at 01:17 PM

ruutu got in some rabbit punches like the announcers said but the punches he hit downie with were nowhere near the punches downie hit with i think they got about the same amount of punches in with downies being alot harder
