May was winning the fight until Rypien got desperate and yanked the jersey over his head. DRAW.

Posted by StanFischler Jr on November 12, 2009 at 11:37 PM

I'm going draw or slight edge to May as he won most of the fight and appeared to land the better punches. Rypien clearly throws quick and with both hands. He's always going to create problems for those he fights unless he gets tagged hard and early.

Posted by blbjd on November 13, 2009 at 07:49 AM

Great job May and Rypien, but Detroit are just absolute morons for not having someone to play with May like a younger bigger enforcer.

Posted by darylfowler on November 18, 2009 at 08:19 PM

lots of punches thrown but lots of misses

Posted by leard3388 on November 13, 2009 at 08:25 PM

Great tilt...good shots landed by both. Rypien's only weakness is his punch impact. For a guy who lands a lot of punches, he seldom does any damage. Go back and look at all of his fights. Great tactition...but can't finish anyone off. Eventually this will catch up to him. Brendan Morrow and Aaron Asham are two examples of middleweights who throw with heavyweight power.

Posted by pvdrummer2000 on January 02, 2015 at 11:10 PM

May was swinging for the fences at first, but Rypien took over once the jersey got caught up around Mays head,

Posted by Scott4 on November 13, 2009 at 07:56 AM

Pretty spirit fight.Old man May shows heart and passion.Draw in my eyes.

Posted by bloodyknuckles2 on November 13, 2009 at 02:49 AM

Brad early, Rypy late.

Posted by gmann14 on November 13, 2009 at 11:58 AM

Great fight, May early Rypien late both threw and landed big punches has to be a draw neither had the upper hand in this one.Leafs suck!!!!

Posted by usedtolikefla on November 12, 2009 at 10:48 PM

Wow.. Rypien took some dirty ones early.. good for him for standing in there.. and then coming back.. i don't think may wanted to go.. puck in van's end.. he had the bad eye. either way.. tanner did better than rypien. fights a draw.

Posted by Clark75 on November 14, 2009 at 12:17 PM

Draw. May hit Rypien with more shots but Rypien gets the take down at the end.

Posted by Behn Wilson on November 14, 2009 at 12:40 AM

Draw out of respect for the effort on both sides... easily the best intensity I've seen so far this season.

Posted by dukeofearle on November 13, 2009 at 12:05 PM

Great scrap atta boy May. I called Draw. Too good a fight to give an edge

Posted by kryon24 on November 13, 2009 at 01:24 PM

Nice job by May of holding up the reputation of number 24 (god knows that fag Chelios tarnished it). Both landed well even though Ripper still threw them even though Pops had the jersey stuck over his head. I call it a draw in one of the better fights this year so far. At least with Pops in there, we won't be the biggest wuss team 4 years running. Hopefully, his showing Abby how to do it will work. We'll have to wait and see. In the meantime, keep chucking em Pops as you've earned our respect.

Posted by groovemessenger on April 20, 2010 at 02:13 PM

I kinda think this was up at the top for the year. Good "young gun" meats "old gunslinger" cred.

Posted by dogace on November 13, 2009 at 01:09 AM

great fight!

Posted by markshark on November 13, 2009 at 11:25 AM

Probably the best fight of the year so far!!! Had to give it a draw.

Posted by Snot-Bubbler on November 13, 2009 at 09:29 AM

If May didn't have that shirt over his head............draw. Rypien was absolutely overmatched.

Posted by Yzermanindahall on November 13, 2009 at 02:45 AM

Id say draw I mean just because you finish it doesnt mean you win. I had a fight were the guy landed a dozen good ones on me and I managed one lucky one that KO him me and him both called it a draw

Posted by mike563 on November 14, 2009 at 02:51 PM

To me the only way rypien got may in the end was with the ole jersey over the head trick otherwise it was pretty close .am i wrong?

Posted by youreapylon on November 13, 2009 at 10:26 AM

May got the better shots! Jersey ended this one quick

Posted by stevkrause on November 13, 2009 at 10:10 AM

close fight, but Rypien with the slight edge... if May hadn't had the sweater go over his head, he most likely would have won - landed one amazing shot...

Posted by stich on November 13, 2009 at 02:54 AM

May is really throwing bombs this year, getting his nose dirty and doing a great job of protecting Wings skill players while providing a spark ... for 38 he is an absolute warrior that commands alot of respect, he sure has mine! I am a little concerned that as the season grinds along he will need someone else to step up and challenge, it was great to see him working with Justin Abdelkader but Johnathon Ericsson can fight and needs to answer the bell once in awhile.

Posted by bruiseyoureye on November 12, 2009 at 10:54 PM

the old man may beat rypien's ass.....rypien should be ashamed of himself having to resort to such dirty tactics against an old man like may at the end of the bet rypien is really embarrassed tonight........may with the easy win.

Posted by ay0medo on November 12, 2009 at 11:10 PM

I hate Rypien but he won it tho!

Posted by shrk33 on November 13, 2009 at 02:32 PM

May was hanging in there early, but then Rypien comes on strong. Win Rypien.

Posted by staceyb on November 13, 2009 at 06:07 AM

May needs to fight another bruiser like Kim Johnsson to re-establish his credibility as a winner.

Posted by mcb789 on November 12, 2009 at 08:29 PM

the detroit weak wings might lead the NHL in fighting majors this season. LOL. may loses yet another fight.

Posted by k.L on November 13, 2009 at 06:58 AM

Win May for teaching fighting in practice. And on a more serious note, edge Rypien.

Posted by basil73 on November 13, 2009 at 09:50 AM

Slight edge to Rypien in this great scrap. May is a true warrior though, I have all the respect for him...

Posted by hal29 on November 13, 2009 at 01:07 AM

no way was may outclassed at all. rypien only got the edge because may's jersey came up overhis head, funny if it was any other guy fghting andthe jersey cam up they wouldbe saying oh he is jeep for hitting him, but when its all of rypien's lover's he get a dominating win and its ok. may dominated he fight until the jersey cam up, thus i m giving ma the win for he actual fight. a jersey comes up it becomes a one side fight. it does't matter who is fighting a jersey comes up and that an will always beat a disadvantage, and it wasmay throwing wit both hands, and rypien wasn't blockingwh his boxing skills he was trying to catch up to the double swinging brawler hand o goes may

Posted by tyler1 on November 13, 2009 at 06:13 AM

hats off to May, but a win by RR.

Posted by kimo_coyote on November 13, 2009 at 03:00 PM

Edge Rypien, May had it early, jersey over head cost him fight.

Posted by sigmapiclem on November 17, 2009 at 10:42 AM

Posted by lovejoy on November 13, 2009 at 03:19 AM

win Rypien in very good fight. Still big respect to gra'pa May.

Posted by thebigbea55 on November 13, 2009 at 12:07 AM

rypien win again.. this guy is a beast.. if he can put on some weight, he will be hard to beat.. his punches doesn't hurt right now.. and he's not 5"11 for sure.. i met him in person and i'm 5'11, he's probably like 5'9...

Posted by DARCY T on November 28, 2009 at 08:30 AM

edge rypien

Posted by mr hockey on November 13, 2009 at 06:03 PM

like i said before it's time for May to hang up his skates win Rypien

Posted by omorales on November 13, 2009 at 09:24 AM

well, Rypien can eat a couple punches. Win the little man.

Posted by billy jack on November 12, 2009 at 10:45 PM

wow may got smoked,i like may,i feel bad for all the old Canadians playing for Detroit these last 6 years having to fight these young guns in defense of Detroit's younger highly paid Europeans.

Posted by Bad Dawg on November 13, 2009 at 10:39 AM

Good scrap, win to Ripper!!!

Posted by dunno on November 13, 2009 at 02:02 AM

Ryp with the win. nice fight though, May landed some solid shots early but in the end he had to cover up when Ryp got the jersey over

Posted by bostonrs555 on November 12, 2009 at 10:23 PM

And May, at the end, don't forget to show that punk the proper way to lay on the stretcher!!! The Ripper with the W

Posted by Blade88 on November 12, 2009 at 10:12 PM

Slight edge to Rypien.

Posted by tattooedkingpin on November 13, 2009 at 11:59 AM

Good fight. May was throwing bombs at the beginning. Then he got tagged and it was curtains after that. W to Rypien

Posted by bruiser11 on November 12, 2009 at 11:39 PM

may looked like he came out to battle at 1st but was then dropped by rypien here

Posted by CairnsIsGod33 on November 13, 2009 at 02:18 AM

Good to see May passing his skills to the younger guys.

Posted by TheBruins1 on November 12, 2009 at 10:39 PM

was pretty good fight, May didn't land like any punches, win goes to Rypien..

Posted by Togalthorpe on November 13, 2009 at 03:29 AM

Grim Rypien the winner with the relentless fists flying

Posted by slshbleed on November 14, 2009 at 11:28 PM

Too bad we can't put May in the time machine for this one. May is still pretty good but not what he used to be.

Posted by dorobo on November 13, 2009 at 12:44 AM

Wasn't sure Rypien was able to withstand some haymakers from tougher guys.. but definately looks like it. WRyp.

Posted by mikebflorida on November 13, 2009 at 11:02 AM

Great fight. May early on and Rypien in the middle and late and ends it pretty convincingly. Rypien is a buzz saw. All due respect to Stan Fischler, Jr clearly doesn't have the same eye for calling fights. Slight edge for May? Which fight were you watching, the one from 1995? Rypien took a few early, yes, but landed the last several punches of the fight and had May in a world of trouble, on his knees, jerseyed, and was landing clean shots. It's not how you start a fight, it's how you end it!

Posted by tristan16 on November 13, 2009 at 05:11 PM

Rypien is the new reining champ in fights.....this guy rocks.

Posted by hkhk on November 13, 2009 at 04:34 PM

i take may on my team anyday.. rypien very solid fighter

Posted by babybulls211 on November 13, 2009 at 04:06 PM

May started off the fight well..... with a few lefts. I really thought that Rypien would lose his first fight in NHL. But he responded well and fed May with some lefts and tied up May's jersey . W to Rypien!!!!!

Posted by moneybags on November 13, 2009 at 02:59 AM

may early but rip came on strong and finished him..good bout

Posted by Truk on November 12, 2009 at 11:16 PM

Good tilt. I give it to Rick for finishing it. The ole man caught a lickin two nights in a row.

Posted by bruins rule on November 12, 2009 at 11:36 PM

rypien gets the win in this spirited bout.

Posted by BigSlickCanuck on November 12, 2009 at 10:21 PM

Would have loved to have seen the back half of the fight in slow motion also. . Rypien dominated the end. .and thus gets the win. Watch it again, May looks in control, then Rypien uses that boxing, blocks a few with his right hand and lands some uppercuts and gets May in trouble at the end. I'm not gonna say Rypien is the middleweight champ, but it would be tough to find anyone who consistently has such entertaining fights.

Posted by Rabid Wombat on November 14, 2009 at 07:25 PM

may early...but rypien comes back and get the W great scrap

Posted by Cherndig on November 14, 2009 at 12:49 AM

One of the best tilts this year. For 38 May is chucking the bombs this year. Both guys deserve a hats off of this old school bout!

Posted by k2412 on November 13, 2009 at 12:01 AM

great fight..two tough guys. Rypien is one tough guy

Posted by childplease on December 10, 2009 at 06:07 PM

May started off good, but RR ended it with a bang. Good fight.

Posted by Scouser on November 14, 2009 at 07:13 AM

Two great fighters going toe to toe with no defence, I think the fans are the real winner in this one. Absolutely loving the lessons from may aswell, top man! Bout wise, may early with some nice shots, Rypien late. Edge to Rypien for me.

Posted by SABREHATRED on November 12, 2009 at 11:17 PM

Posted by Rypien-37 on November 13, 2009 at 03:06 PM

Good start by May but then Rypien takes over and goes to work with both hands, very close to me calling it a draw but I think Rypien just clinches it though.

Posted by abomb74 on November 12, 2009 at 11:44 PM

How is rypien not the best middle weight in the league?

Posted by YouGotOwned on November 13, 2009 at 03:04 PM

Anyone that even thinks may stands a chance with Ricky has obviously gone off the deep end... He is a very patient fighter just because he covers in the beginning does not means hes getting owned... hes waiting for the right time to strike... Watch every fight he has had..... he is a psycho you don't want a peice of this guy... Watch out Lucic... Watch Out Jared Boll.... The Ripper is Coming!!!

Posted by kronvallizer78 on January 18, 2010 at 01:53 PM

thats what you call a good bout. great and wild exchanges there by the two both of them with some big hits on target even as a wings fan i`ll give the slight edge to rypien, the dude is one tenacious bastAR*** brad hung in there pretty good but it was over when the jersey went above his head. win rypien

Posted by Keredz on November 12, 2009 at 10:26 PM

Good fight by both. May had a great start and a couple decent shots in the beginning, Rypien finished it.

Posted by crashandbang on November 14, 2009 at 01:34 PM

Holy flying fists of fuckin fury Batman! Mayday started out great, then the Ripper got it goin and holy shit, man that was crazy, win for the Ripper

Posted by Dave Brown HOF on November 16, 2009 at 01:37 AM

Two of my faves going at it and they didn't disappoint. Great fight with the win going to Rypien. Brad May's still a supreme warrior after all of these years.

Posted by ulfy on November 12, 2009 at 11:44 PM

Rypien wins

Posted by jbaktai on November 12, 2009 at 11:37 PM

May put up a better fight then i thought he would. Win Rypien

Posted by JMiller29 on December 12, 2009 at 11:31 AM

Best all-out brawl of the year. The girls behind the glass are over joyed...being Wings fans they've probably never seen a fight before.

Posted by GarthButcher on November 13, 2009 at 12:04 PM

Two of my favourites. Kind of like watching your kids fight. Apparently the video replay was in fast motion. Tight victory for Ricky Rip.

Posted by indoblazin on December 11, 2009 at 01:54 PM

Those were some fists of fury there. No hugging, no blocking, just rock 'em sock 'em, I love it. Sick left-uppercut right-overhand combo at 0:20 by Rypien -- he just lets go of May's jersey and lets both hands fly. That left May landed on Rypien's cheek at 0:15 would've dropped almost anyone else. May was the Rypien of the Burke-Crow era, nice to see the past and present collide here.

Posted by mike hartman on December 06, 2009 at 09:51 AM

Great Fight!! Rypien can sure take a punch as May landed a couple haymakers. It's time for people to stop calling Rypien one of the best middleweights out there, He's a bona fide enforcer. He will go with anyone, and usually wins.

Posted by trailmix on December 11, 2009 at 08:51 AM

Rypien can take a punch. May landed early but Rypien blistered him at the end.

Posted by jmackisback on November 13, 2009 at 02:43 AM

stanfischler, you must be from Detroit. In no way did May have the edge in that fight.

Posted by Bloodbank on December 07, 2009 at 11:01 PM

Great fight by both but Rypien busier and dominated the second half after a huge right surprises May, snapping his head back at 0:18. This ain't your old one-handed fighting NHL!!!! May gets jersied. May's face glowing in the PB. FOY in an all too short fight. Decision = Rypien

Posted by 2001GT on January 02, 2010 at 01:26 AM

Rick is too fast and too intense. Nice to see May try to hang in there.

Posted by rwlsn on November 14, 2009 at 01:23 PM

lb. for lb. Rypien is a great one and how about the old guys heart? These two are great for the game.

Posted by ghjkfdhgfd on December 13, 2013 at 09:31 PM

Posted by tkehler on November 12, 2009 at 10:26 PM

After absorbing some shots from May, Rypien rallied and then dominated. May is experienced and game, but he was outclassed by a smaller, tougher fighter tonight, in a very spirited bout. If Rypien had more power behind his punches, he could undoubted be one of the toughest fighters ever in his weightclass (under 200 lbs).

Posted by GET SOME on November 15, 2009 at 08:15 AM

Great fight to watch! Old man May still has some fight left in him. Win to Rypien but you have to give props to May for hanging in there.

Posted by vangodard28 on January 24, 2010 at 08:28 PM

May made a bit of a comeback halfway through but was still overwhelmed by Rypien.

Posted by Rypienrocks on March 14, 2010 at 05:07 PM

May got in one good punch at the start but then Rypien got the jackhammers out and all May could was duck and cover.

Posted by TrueBlue26 on November 13, 2009 at 10:28 AM

im not counting the punches thats rypein landed while may had the jersey over his head....hes defense less, he cant see nor can he throw accurately refs shoulda stoped the fight then and there but they let may eat a few...draw

Posted by goob on November 13, 2009 at 09:50 AM

may landed some heavy shots early and ripper stood in there and took over the fight from there....awesome fight

Posted by claire alexande on November 13, 2009 at 04:08 PM

Have to call it a draw--old man May gives Rypien all he can handle until the jersey comes up. Real class move by Rypien to keep pounding away once that happened. I remember all the Rypien lovers rationalizing his beating by Doug Murray on the basis that his jersey came up over his head. Rypien can throw like no-one's business, that's for sure.

Posted by mriguy on November 13, 2009 at 10:57 PM

may early, rypien late, that was one great fight, wide open, swinging, it went both ways and both took some lumps.....good on ya boys....dion should sit down and watch this fight, he could actually learn something from you guys...

Posted by millerdvr on November 12, 2009 at 10:25 PM

May with the clear win, Ripper landed only bitch slaps with no damage

Posted by muskokadangler on November 14, 2009 at 06:53 PM

Yeah Baby!!!!! I love them both!!!! Clear win Ripper but there is no doubt May's punches had more on them. Just can't beat the speed of youth but all you hater's on May the last fight odviously don't appreciate the true ART of fighing. Also Ripper can take a good punch as the replay shows but I think he needs to power up abit because one of these days while he is speed baggin some heavy............He's gunna get caught!!!!!!BIG TIME Two handed fighters are the cats ass!! DRAW,May's head flies back when Ripper grabs his jersey. I watched it in frame by frame and Ripper's punches are not making there mark!!!!!

Posted by Bahjay on November 13, 2009 at 07:10 AM

Couple of well respected warriors going at it here... not sure how anybody could hate on either. Slight edge to Rypien.

Posted by Oil Can Henry on November 13, 2009 at 02:32 PM

A very good one and tough to judge. May had his man and was winning, but Rypien turned it around. Possible draw,....but gave the slight edge to Rypien.

Posted by chad420 on November 14, 2009 at 07:25 PM

another win for the ripper...may dropping bombs but was getting lit up..especially @ the end....

Posted by snowave on November 13, 2009 at 03:02 AM

I love Brad May. Guy has a huge heart for the game and the fans. Nice start for May, but RR ends it in a flourish and the win.

Posted by Viper207 on November 12, 2009 at 10:20 PM

May with some pretty solid shots early, but the younger and faster Rypien takes control and lands some jerseyed shots to May's head to end the fight with the win. Great fight, and props to an aging May for squaring off with the league's fastest, craftiest puncher.

Posted by DuffyBank on November 13, 2009 at 09:35 AM

Most of Mays early punches missed, yes a few did connect and he also got in a few forearms, but it was Rypien's overhand left that first rocked May then the following left uppercuts finished him off. Ironic that May was finished off by exactly what he was teaching in practice.

Posted by rocky7482 on November 13, 2009 at 01:07 PM

Rypien with the TKO....May got in a good shot early, but Rypein is just way too fast....he's got to match up with Janssen and Asham....a lot of guys think that they are the top welterweights, but I am not sure.....Rypien is awesome.

Posted by blueshirts1623 on November 13, 2009 at 10:49 AM

Close, but the win goes to Rypien for throwing and landing more punches. Not to say that May didn't, you just can't give him a tie here. Great fight though.

Posted by samtheman on November 13, 2009 at 08:37 AM

Gave the win to Rypien even though I'n not sure how many of those late punches actually landed. May landed some big ones early on.

Posted by BigBadBruins68 on November 13, 2009 at 08:05 AM

Damn!! Rypien went Tazmanian Devil on his ass!

Posted by piney on November 13, 2009 at 05:55 AM

strong start by May. Stronger finish by Rypien

Posted by nilanator on November 13, 2009 at 03:59 PM

A good fight! May started strong, but Rypien got in some hard shots and got May's jersey up over his head. Win: Rypien

Posted by Dave_42 on November 12, 2009 at 10:15 PM

Good scrap. I don't get why people are bashing May, the guy's awesome. Hopefully with him teaching Abdelkader we will be seeing him finally drop the gloves.

Posted by poopies on November 12, 2009 at 11:28 PM

Rypien is probably the most entertaining fighter right now.

Posted by Rick16 on November 13, 2009 at 07:23 PM

man i've loved the way may has been scrapping this year and he landed a beauty punch early... but then rypien TOOK OVER! he blocked a couple haymakers from may, caught him off-balance and started landing bombs including some fierce uppercuts may had to hit the ice after the jersey was over his head win rypien, but props to both!

Posted by straightup on November 14, 2009 at 08:45 PM

Great fight. You have to love the old warrior taking on this young buzzsaw. A beauty left by May, but when Rypien started throwing with both hands instead of holding on (who does that in hockey? I love that) he landed the right that got him the advantage. That was great to watch.

Posted by CubsJunkie on January 28, 2010 at 11:33 PM

Best fight I've seen this season. Draw at first, but then Rypien owned.

Posted by Richterfan on November 13, 2009 at 03:19 PM

WOW what a fight. May, looking for redemption for his last fight with Boll, starts out with a couple huge left hands. Rypien who is the best MW/LHW in the league takes the shots and then shows incredible speed and wins the fight. For sheer speed, this could be a FOTY candidate. Rypien could be one of the fastest punchers in the history of this league.

Posted by Krahn on November 13, 2009 at 10:51 AM

King Ryp strikes again!!! great fight, may comes with the bombs early but Rick the Rypper comes back!

Posted by PuckmaninMN on November 13, 2009 at 07:56 AM

Win for Rypien here due to the flurry and tko at the end. This may be the fight of the year so far, IMO. May want to find someone to give him fighting lessons and stop giving them to teammates.

Posted by Heater15 on December 15, 2009 at 12:49 AM

awesome fight
