wow very good video footage....they slow it down and give us three different looks i must say that Rypien is an amazing fighter......not since Stan Jonathan have i seen a guy so able to move up in size and look dominant lighting fast.....accurate.....overwhelming......Janssen is great but Rypien really carved him up!! FOTY so far i would say....impressive stuff!

Posted by sitnlo38 on January 01, 2010 at 06:20 PM

good fight not the greatest janssen strong start rypien strong finish thae tape not an issue in the fight but rule 43 states wear tape below the wrist we may not like but we don't like the holding the stick penalties either so why does canucklehead coach v always cry when one of his puppets gets tossed had to know the tape was there but do like the way jackman rag dolled the twins reminded me of a puppet show

i called it a draw. Rypien landed more, but I thought Janssen landed harder punches. A good fight, interesting to see Rypien against a heavy weight,

Posted by tkomofo on January 02, 2010 at 10:04 PM

this fight was a draw. people give it to rypien because they hate cam. cam ate some punches but was totally unphased and kept on throwing. the blood from his nose only means he took a punch to the nose. bleeding doesn't mean you lost.

Well said Claire A. I am also sick of the man love for Rypien and share your hatred of the Capukes. Have to call this one a draw. Yea Janssen had a good cut, but he caught Rypien with some as well and most of Rypien's wild ass swings were misses. He fights like a man on nose candy.....hmmm.

Posted by ScarbroSaint on January 02, 2010 at 10:24 AM

i liked this fight both guys are allways in good tilts rypien pound 4pound champ? ill call it a draw because janssen could have gone 12 rounds well maybe>

Posted by kronvallizer78 on January 18, 2010 at 06:29 AM

great tilt by two of the best in their respective weight class. cam janssen is one tough bastard. not since last years bout with aaron downey did he look this good. however rypien gave him fits in this one. call it a draw no clear winner to determine, both landed some big blows.

Posted by BigFistRocco on January 01, 2010 at 02:34 PM

FIGHT OF THE YEAR! Rypien continues to amaze for his size. Too close to call though Janssen was a mess.

Posted by TeethR4Losers on December 31, 2009 at 08:37 PM

No defence from either. DRAW.

Posted by PuddlePirate on January 24, 2010 at 04:40 AM

Damn. Janssen is a beast. Rypien is fast. Good fight. Both did well.

Posted by BigSensFan on January 01, 2010 at 11:29 PM

Easily a draw. They exchanged haymakers. No clear winner

Posted by Mikkel H. on April 16, 2010 at 01:16 AM

fight of the year ?

Posted by Nickanto on December 31, 2009 at 08:01 PM

Ripper and Janssen will be having beers together after the game, I'm sure.

Posted by mjb_17 on January 01, 2010 at 06:10 PM

I agree, blood does not equal a win. Both guys were throwing a lot of punches....DRAW!

Posted by DjKingIsTheMan on December 31, 2009 at 10:22 PM

Great fight from both. Fight of the year candidate here. Slight edge to Rypien for fuking up Cam's nose. Greatest tilt ive seen this year.

Posted by kingpintoo on January 01, 2010 at 07:36 PM

Rypien is a piss ant scum bag. He had tape on his right hand and all the way up and around his thumb. His contact to the nose was with the right hand and he was using the tape to get traction and friction on Janssen's face. There is a huge difference between gettin hit with a fist and with a fist with tape on it. The tape will rip your face and cause much damage inside a nose by gripping it and turning and pulling it. This was just absolute dirty bull#*^#. He used the tape for sure. Just watch it in slo mo. He cheated and loses the fight. He got outpunched anyway. The nose bleed was from the cheatin. He should be fined alot and get a suspension. He chose to fight with the tape. You'all vote blood?

Posted by allienmort on April 15, 2010 at 09:00 PM

Cheating is an automatic DQ for Rypien. Who does he think he is, Souray??

Posted by tank10 on December 31, 2009 at 11:43 PM

I'd have to say fight of the far. DRAW.

Posted by rocky 1 on January 15, 2010 at 08:05 PM

Posted by nox101 on January 01, 2010 at 05:02 PM

Too close to call.

Posted by potosicc on January 01, 2010 at 03:56 PM

obvious Vancouver bias on earlier reviews. Dead even fight, Janssen still throwing when linesmen stepped in, acted the same in box as he always does and played in the game later. Rypien needs to follow the rules-probably knew he needed every advantage he could get against Janssen. Hands down a draw.

Posted by ThePolishHammer on January 01, 2010 at 05:43 PM

The Ripper may have landed more, but like the announcer stated, the longer the fight goes...the stronger Cam gets. Janssen has fantastic endurance. IMO...this fight is a draw as Cam was still game & throwing & the refs may have done Rypien a favor because had this fight gone on another 30-40 seconds, Rypein would have gotten pounded hard!

Posted by Noah7296 on August 20, 2010 at 03:29 PM

This shouldve been best fight of the year nominated. Definetely voting for ricky as the comeback fighter of the year

Posted by Hal Pearson on October 25, 2010 at 08:33 AM

good fight like to see all those punches thrown

Posted by Togalthorpe on January 01, 2010 at 05:11 PM

Rypien with the win, probably all you canuck douchers that voted that, but I called it Janssen with the slight edge

Posted by DasBlues74 on January 02, 2010 at 08:10 PM

Rypien got a lot of small punches, Janssen landed haymakers, even bout

Posted by jcrash on January 01, 2010 at 11:11 PM

cam landed bigger blows, ryp just got 1 good shot on the nose. win cam bam

Posted by LauraBlues on May 11, 2010 at 03:13 PM

Janssen is the man! He reminds me of Bobby Plager back in the day - so scrappy and will fight anyone. Cam - if you ever want a hot 45 year old who knows her hockey let me know!

Posted by Snot-Bubbler on April 16, 2010 at 01:52 PM

I will never understand how a guy who hits like a bitch gets all the votes, and is the darling of the fighting is one thing....but how effective are those punches.

Posted by mctuttle on August 03, 2010 at 03:04 PM

Rypien caused jannsen's nose to bleed with helmeted head butts and was a pussy for wear tape.

Posted by bostonrs555 on December 31, 2009 at 11:21 PM

Isn't every fight an attempt to injure?!?!!?!

Posted by amerks25 on January 02, 2010 at 11:05 PM

Rypien is a true dirt bag back stabber. POS hockey player. I love the jock sniffers that want to get on their knees in front of him. Get a life

Posted by bruiseyoureye on January 02, 2010 at 01:50 PM

janssen wins because rypien got disqualified for cheating with his hand all taped up. janssen by no means is a heavyweight....hes a light/middleweight at best........lets see how good this little twarp rypien is when he fights the boogaard's and the godard's and laraque's of the nhl.

Posted by zeke2008 on February 15, 2010 at 03:24 AM

janssen with the win obviously, rypien had tape thats illegal, also janssen landed more shots to the face and rypien were body shots

Posted by The Mob on January 05, 2010 at 09:05 PM

Janssen is ugly enough without the face mutilation he got in this one. He can't get enough of these beat downs as far as I'm concerned.

Posted by AdAdA on January 03, 2010 at 11:33 AM

I like Rypien! let´s fight man

Posted by staceyb on January 01, 2010 at 02:51 PM

Rypien landed more. Janssen is the successor to Tie Domi IMHO.

Posted by Behn Wilson on January 01, 2010 at 07:05 PM

Bieska looked to be chasing Janssen, before Rypien (unfortunately for Janssen) jumped in. In real-time, it looked drawish, but the slow-mo showed Rypien picking him apart. By the end, Janssen, bereft of his usual ''poor-man's Tie Domi'' cockiness, seemed dazed, but still aware enough to be relieved that Rypien got tossed. Great fight. Nasty win... Rypien.

Posted by Dougr on January 02, 2010 at 12:29 PM

eek eek...what a beak.....both these gus are well respected fighters....looking at the slow motion replay it doesn't like many of Janssen shots landed on Rypiens face.....mostly helmet and shoulder shots, hence the bloodied hand....but that nose was definitely Rypien's handiwork....

Posted by pmarz1 on April 18, 2010 at 08:24 AM

Rypien landed the better punches, just look at Janssen's face at the end of the clip. For the few douchebags who insist on this being a draw or worse, a win for Janssen, stop with the ignorant posts, you are only embarrassing yourselves. Your guy lost, deal with it and dont use the bs tape rule as an excuse. Rypien's wrist/thumb was taped, no impact on the fight whatsoever.

Posted by rugby on December 31, 2009 at 11:59 PM

These guys are at the top of their game this year and many on this site have wanted to see this bout, and we were not disappointed. I will admit that I am a huge Rypien fan but thought he would be in trouble when going up against some of the big boys (except Stortini), which Janssen seems to do with success, but even he is considerably bigger than Rypien.. Absolutely amazing that at one point Rypien throws and lands a right, blocks Cam with his left and then immediately throws a scoring left cross without even getting hit. He showcased his boxing skills and Janssen left the ice looking pretty confused and busted up which is a big change from his normal wave the linesman away and cocky skate to the box. Great fight, I am sure they will go again, and Janssen will continue the good work, but a very impressive win by Rypien.

Posted by jrs210 on January 05, 2010 at 03:15 PM

Rypien and Lucic would be the fight of the year. Hands Down

Posted by rowbearprobear on January 01, 2010 at 04:27 PM

win rypien cam had no answers announcers are hilarious with the "allegedly" comment the saint louis crowd looked stunned

Posted by bobbylou64 on January 01, 2010 at 03:33 PM

Terrible call on the match penalty. It wasn't tape that busted Janssen's nose.

Posted by commander on January 03, 2010 at 02:36 PM

Posted by k7runner on January 08, 2010 at 02:23 AM

great fight - pretty even - ref's broke it up due to the bloody/broken nose and rypien not wanting anymore blood on him as for ... bruiseyoureye - hand all taped up? get real - watch the video janssen - weight 210 rypien - weight 184 think before you write

Posted by J.R. Abel on January 07, 2010 at 05:08 PM

Rick ripped Cam a new one

Posted by crazyschwaab on January 01, 2010 at 05:18 PM

rypien got the match penalty because of the tape. I was listening to the radio for this game and chase said it was because cam had a nasty cut/scrape from the tape on rypiens hand. wish the zebras would have let it continue a while long. I'm sure that janssen had no objections to the tape or blood... I hope we get to see round two. edge goes to rypien for having a great showing as usual

Posted by canamrugby on January 01, 2015 at 12:22 AM

Yet again chalk up another loss for Janssen; 100% useless.

Posted by 2001GT on January 02, 2010 at 01:10 AM

Posted by dunno on January 02, 2010 at 02:44 AM

im not sure if im watching the same fight as some people. clearly those who didnt think rypien won the fight need to watch it over again. yes, blood does not equal win but look at who lands the most shots and did the most damage.

Posted by itsthizzbaby on March 21, 2010 at 01:56 PM

Bieksa would have kicked Janssen's ass anyways, it wouldn't have mattered.

Posted by knuckle_chucker on December 31, 2009 at 07:48 PM

Fight of the year so far in my opinion. Great toe to toe scrap with Rypien getting the "W" for sure.

This was a great fight, and I have to give it to Rypien, he landed more and he landed often. The ejection surprised me, but it's in the rule book.

Posted by gampbler on January 01, 2010 at 02:10 AM

I have to admit I was a bit worried when they dropped them for Rypien leaving himself open to a fighter of Janssen's ability, but holy crap, hands down win to Rypien. You could tell Janssen was choked that he lost with the obvious damage done to his face.

Posted by pixely on December 31, 2009 at 10:59 PM

While Janssen does a fair job throwing a number of decent punches, they were not hard enough to stop/slow Rypien. Much more weight behind Rypiens' punches; especially the devastation he puts on Janssen's nose. Rick gets the win.

Posted by swanny34 on January 01, 2010 at 11:17 PM

Rypien isn't the "second coming", and he isn't the best middle weight ever, but for giving away 30 lbs. and a few inches in height, he handles himself quite well. Blood doesn't equate to a victory either, but a busted nose goes along way.

Posted by unvy on January 01, 2010 at 07:15 PM

uh, has Ryp fought Boogard yet?

Posted by Canadiangunner on January 01, 2010 at 03:07 PM

Funny how Janssen would not step up against the bigger guys like Hordichuk and Obrein as they were trying to go with him for the first 10 minutes of the game but Janssen would just turn the other way. Then when he sees the much smaller Rypien challenge him he drops the gloves right he thought it would be an easy but did he get owned. I'm sure Janssen would rather go with the bigger guys next time around. Rypien claims another heavyweight victim and at only 5'9 and 170lbs this guy is a pitbull terrier...greatest pound for pound in the nhl right now!! The legend continues!

Posted by GoliathBnr on April 18, 2010 at 05:30 PM

rypien landed more with both hands

Posted by jackdaripper on April 16, 2010 at 06:58 PM

great fight by both guys, lots of heavy punches. To " Tomales2" who wrote after the Rypien - Mayers fight that Rypien's punches could"nt hurt his 5 year old daughter he might want to ask Janssen about that!

Posted by freezie17 on April 25, 2010 at 02:35 PM

I don't agree with Rypien getting kicked out of the game. The tape didn't look like it effected the fight at all and apparently he had asked the ref prior to see if it was okay. I think that round goes to Rypien

Posted by FourFeathersFTW on January 07, 2011 at 04:07 PM

1:52-1:56: The only thing worse than landing a punch to the crown of someone's head is landing a punch to the crown of someone's head while they're wearing a helmet. These guys have hands of stone. Janssen throws with his whole body like Joey Kocur v2.0, but unfortunately he ate 2 punches for every one he threw. Win Rypien

Posted by FCB-Rizla-TML on January 08, 2011 at 12:17 AM

they both were throwing strong punches... swingin for the fences... entertaining fight overall

Posted by jmackisback on December 31, 2009 at 09:40 PM

This cements Rypien as one of the top P4P in the league. Janssens nose is going to need some work.

Posted by Bloodbank on January 01, 2010 at 08:45 AM

This fight answered the prayers of many of us fight fans. Crowning, decisive win by new MW champ, Rick Rypien. CJ missed most of his shots but made a pig of himself feasting on a buffet of left/rights + humble pie. Whoo! Rypien tossed for having tape on his hands below the wrist during a fight where the opponent is injured and not for performing Odgers~Hunter Rhinoplasty. Injuries suffered by CJ: Cut lip, broken nose, lacerated hand and wounded pride. (NOTE 4) Any player wearing tape or any other material on his hands (below the wrist) who cuts or injures an opponent during an altercation will receive a match penalty under Rule 43 -- Attempt to or Deliberate Injury of Opponents in addition to any other penalties imposed including penalties for fighting under this rule.

Posted by Knukklz on January 01, 2010 at 11:12 PM

I originally thought Ryp took a few shots at the start. After checking out the slo-mo, Janssen's first 4 punches hit helmet or sailed over top, plus one other a few seconds later. He landed squat, while Ryp took him apart. Season's Beatings, Cam.

Posted by phuckyouguys on January 01, 2010 at 10:05 PM

Let's face it alot of canuckcock suckers here Rypien is good but he hasn't fought anyone worthy till tonight ... and even that is a stretch . At least hes exciting to watch otherwise lets all calm down ..

Posted by DRay on January 02, 2010 at 09:30 PM

What I like about this fight is both boys were gamers. Both guys are not known for holding on. The classy thing about Rypien is that even though he clearly won the fight, he quietly goes to the penalty box to do his time. Not like Janssen who is too much of a hot dog for me. While I like him as a fighter he draws a Zero in the class department.. Great fight and in my mind the best fight of the year. Hats off to both guys. Win Rypien. I think the reason so many people are on Rypien's bandwagon is purely based on the fact he gives up 25 lbs to even guys that are considered middleweights. Plus he never has a boring fight!!!!

Posted by phillyBrashear on January 03, 2010 at 01:39 PM

now that's a hockey fight. rypien with win.

Posted by micah555 on December 31, 2009 at 11:19 PM

Rypien is the greatest. He needs to be on the Wheaties box. I guess that answers the question about who would win between these two.

Posted by kingpaolo on January 02, 2010 at 05:39 PM

Rypien puts on the foil... win the Ripper

Posted by rpw1 on January 01, 2010 at 02:20 PM

Rypien with the win.

Posted by infestedcut on January 17, 2010 at 11:10 PM

American commentators are stupid. Stronger as the fight goes? The only time when Janssen had a chance, was the beginning. As well, people keep saying about light jabs, those light jabs are still stinger. I don't think you'd like them if you get hit by those, trust me.

Posted by dukeofearle on April 17, 2010 at 11:05 PM

Wow. I gave it to Ripper, no blood on him.

Posted by Crazy_Canuck on January 02, 2011 at 11:24 PM

What a bout Rypien pretty much beat down Janssen. Janssen landed a few but they were fairly uneffective Rypien FTW. No doubt. Janssen didn't com close to winning anything in that fight.

Posted by Chadricco on January 01, 2010 at 05:11 PM

That was beautiful. Excuse me...... while I wipe a little tear.

Posted by pj316927 on January 01, 2010 at 12:33 PM

rick rypien had tape... big deal. sprained thumb blah blah. the fight was a very hard punching hard hitting bout. as much as i appreciated janssen on the devils i have to say rypien is the winner

Posted by STEVEO74 on January 04, 2010 at 01:39 AM

Rypien all the way. Love this guy. But love seeing Janssen get beat even more!

Posted by KO22 on January 04, 2010 at 05:06 PM

It's laughable that anyone would score this a Janssen victory or a draw. This was a decisive victory for Rypien. Anyone who thinks otherwise is low functioning. Janssen is a cheap, talentless weasel and for that beating Ripper, I thank you! Oh and Bloodchurn, good call on the draw verdict, have you been drinking?

Posted by timmat1 on December 31, 2009 at 11:28 PM

I love janssen but i got to give the edge to the buzzsaw. nobody throws punches like rypien!

Posted by budwizeerr on January 03, 2010 at 10:33 AM

I really do not know what most of you guys looks at , I have the dvr and when you slow it down frame by frame only 3 punches landed 2 by Rypien and 1 for Janssen. I will give the fight to RYP because he landed the nose shot , but he asked the ref to step in because he was tired and Janssen was just getting wound up.

Posted by Bassen28 on January 01, 2010 at 12:19 PM

Great fight...what else can you say

Posted by Dave Brown HOF on January 07, 2010 at 10:31 AM

I was a little skeptical that Ripper would be able to do it as I thought that Janssen might have been a little bit out of his class but Ripper proved once again what an ass kicker that he is. Two very tough guys but a fairly decisive decision to Rypien. Although I think that the linesmen jumped in a little too quickly and I know that Janssen's a good second half fighter. Not too sure how you could see it any other way other than a win to Rypien, unless your blind, biased or retarded or more than likely a combination of all 3. Even if you thought the punches thrown and landed were even, which they weren't, then the damage to Cam's face should tell you who's punches were more telling. And for anybody who can't see that, well then there's no hope for you anyways. I wish that they had of showed the Sportsnet feed as it showed just how bad the condition of Cam's nose really was. Rypien's hand has been taped like that for some time now and was a TOTAL non issue in this fight. The tape was around his wrist, through the inside of his thumb and the palm of his hand. The last time that I checked you don't throw punches with any of those parts of your hand. Again, I wish that we had the Sportsnet feed. Cam wasn't cut from tape and from what I seen he wasn't cut at all. And for those of you who think that it was, you're complete fu$king morons. For those of you who are too stupid to realize it, Cam was pissing out blood from his NOSTRILS which are in the inside of his nose. Pretty hard for Rypien to cut the inside of Cam's nose with a punch or anything else. You also don't stick Q-tips up your nostrils to help with the bleeding if the outside of your nose is cut which it wasn't. Face it the only reason that you piss blood out of your nostrils like that or for any other reason is if you've been smashed in the beak which is exactly what happened. It doesn't take a PHD to figure that out, just some common sense and some fight knowledge but I guess we can't all have that can we.... Claire? Claire, no fantasizing here. Just a realist. RR will lose a few as does everybody but he didn't this time. It's useless punks like you who will make sure their bias and hatred against him skewer the votes during his closer fights though. And he has yet to have his head handed to him, something that your girlfriend Brandon Prust can't say. I notice that you didn't say anything about the blood flow from Cam's nostrils though. So here's to hoping that you didn't eat too many of your retard sandwiches for lunch and were able to listen to some common sense. Claire/Sling, at last count the Reich fight was rated around 40% as being a draw. Which is hardly having your head handed to you. And in the Murray fight, Rypien lost his balance and Murray pulled his jersey over his head and gave him a couple of shots that didn't even faze Rypien. I would like to see these 2 go again toe to toe. Draw is a supportable opinion eh? Like I said, even if Rypien didn't have the punch count both thrown and landed in his favor(which he did anyways) then the condition of Janssen's broken nose should be the deciding factor. I's be willing to bet that even Cam would say that he lost that fight. Face it, you based your voting on your well known hatred for the Nucks and nothing else. I don't have any problems debating VALID points made by others based on facts, insight or knowledge but you have proven to be bereft of all 3. Don't blame me because of this. My proof is in your statements. Punk can also mean inferior(maybe instead of spending all of your time spell checking you should try and expand your vocabulary), which is exactly what your knowledge of hockey and fighting has been proven to be. You might be right though, you probably are old enough to be my father but unlike you, my old man still has his wits about him. This does explain a lot though. First of all, you must be in the late stages of dementia based on your views on the fights on this site. Add that to the distinct possibility that you probably suffer from cataracts due in part to your advanced age, which because of this, obviously clouds both you eyesight and your judgement. Hey Claire, when the care lady tries to pry you off your computer chair so that she can change your diaper and get you to your next bingo game in time, you should probably listen to her. Claire, I wasn't making excuses at all. I never said that he won those fights, I was simply correcting you AGAIN on the fact that you said that he had his head handed to him in those fights, as well as others, according to you, which considering your dubious track record, we all know means absolutely nothing. That was the argument but I guess that you forgot, probably for the reasons that I've stated previously. Dementia and cataracts are not for those people who disagree with me, that honor I reserved just for you, hence why I called you out specifically. I was simply just trying to explain and excuse you on why you contradict yourself, show bias, review fights with fighters who aren't even fighting(Stone=Stoll) and your overall general lack of knowledge. Dementia and cataracts are not name calling, they are health issues and I guess are supposed to give you a free pass as to why you think(?) the way that you do. Also, "punks from the Worst Coast"? Sounds like name calling to me, which is just an example of what a hypocrite that you are as well, and is proof of your anti-Canuck bias and the one of the main reasons why you vote the way that you do, along with the reasons stated above of course. Enjoy your bingo today and I hope that you win the full card game as it may win you an extra piece of cheese cake for dessert tonight. But if you don't it's ok, you don't have to run over the winner with your walker as you may be put to bed without having your soiled diaper changed for you.

rypien the definite win in an absolute 10, really a phenomenal hockey fight. didn't even last as long as it could have, but the amount of punches thrown is staggering. certainly the fight of the year to this point.

Posted by Pucked on December 31, 2009 at 08:08 PM

Some of the damage Rypien did was with the short rights he landed while holding onto Janssens's jersey. Janssen gets credit for continue to throw knuckles even after his nose was broken.

Posted by Blackhawk23 on January 01, 2010 at 05:28 PM

Great fight! Edge to Rypien. He really reminds me of PJ Stock back in the day with his all out style and despite being undersized he can go with the heavyweights. Janssen had a hell fight as well. Great way to bring in the new year

Posted by tattooedkingpin on January 01, 2010 at 04:45 PM

Great fight. hard to even keep track of all those punches. Edge to Rypien

Posted by Madcheddar on January 02, 2010 at 12:19 PM

Cam Janssen had a good year in 2009, however Cam Jassen's face had a very bad year. Hockeyfights should start paying Rypien to put on clinics like this one. P.S. Most of the crackhead losers that post comments here are delusional. If you can't see that that punk Janssen got his ass handed to him in a blood soaked brown paper lunch bag, you need to head back to the re-hab center and get yourselves some treatment. This site as so many a$$clowns commenting on it it's ridiculous.

rypien gets the win in this outstanding fight.

Posted by Awesome-0 on January 03, 2010 at 12:12 AM

I'm giving Rypien the Win - the bloody nose has to count for something- but it could easily be a Draw. Both fighters were very immpresive.

Posted by Bossy_22 on January 01, 2010 at 07:16 PM

After watching it a couple times, Rypien landed more. He gets the win in my books. That tape thing is in the rulebook, so whatever...however, Mr. Announcer, Rypien was not in a fight against Phoenix - I was at that game, no fights at all.

Posted by EastKing on January 01, 2010 at 03:50 PM

Fight of the year!!!!! I don't see why Rypien was thrown out of the game though. Both fighter threw great puches but Rypien gets the clear edge because Janssen was bleeding pretty bad.

Posted by SereneParadox on January 02, 2010 at 11:18 PM

Rypien wins in what I consider to be the fight of the year. Janssen's condition in the penalty box after says it all. He's practically dead.

Posted by Rypien-37 on April 27, 2010 at 04:56 PM

Fight of the year indeed. Great fight by both and trying not to sound a homer but edge to Rypien, still don't get why he was tossed stupid rule not like his knuckles were taped up doubt much injury could be done by where the tape was on his thumb. Rypien does indeed = Pitbull! Rypien does indeed = Beast!

Posted by Susdy22 on January 01, 2010 at 02:21 PM

Hopefully Janssen noticed how classy Rypien was after humiliating him on home ice. No show boating or arm pumps, something that Janssen does when he wins. Rypien is simply much tougher and a way better fighter. i wonder if Janssen's nose has stopped bleeding?

Posted by curtfrasersleft on December 31, 2009 at 07:47 PM

Awesome toe to toe with two very evenly matched and skilled fighters! Big edge to Rypen for ending the fight with big punches to Janssen's face. And ya Janssen's condition in the box says it all.

Posted by Bosoxshute on January 01, 2010 at 09:55 AM

Great fight, how come Rypien got the attempt to injure match penalty? I didn't see anything extra. Win Ryp

Posted by metz87 on January 01, 2010 at 05:16 PM

That rule is bs! As for the fight to say it is maybe the FOTY so far is the truh. Hope we have more fights like this this season.

Fight of the Year!

Posted by jrobber on January 02, 2010 at 04:36 AM

broken nose = win

Posted by Ilovefighting on December 31, 2009 at 07:46 PM

It was a very spirited fight, Rick rypien caught him with a huge right near the end, which cut janssen. Ryp was ejected from the game on a terrible rule. his THUMB was taped not his HAND OR KNUCKLES. it was a clean fight, ryp wins in a close decision.

Posted by canuckkiller001 on December 31, 2009 at 08:08 PM

Great fight in goes to rypien. For sure Rypien has to be mentioned as the top guy in the weight class and quite possibly the best fighter in the league pound for pound

Posted by nucks_4_life on December 31, 2009 at 08:09 PM

That was a great fight by Rypien and a bullshit call on the refs cause the tape wasnt even able to touch Janssen unless Rypien karate chopped him but it was nice to see Rypien beat the shit out of Janssen anyway

Posted by ibimcan on December 31, 2009 at 08:35 PM

Did you see Cam's face after the fight - how could anybody vote for anybody but rypien!!! Ask Cam, he'll tell you who won the fight. He'll be game to go again - that's what makes him a warrior. It was similiar to Ripper';s first fight this year with Stortini - a genuine beat down !!

Posted by tofuwrice on December 31, 2009 at 10:11 PM

Rypien destroyed his nose.

Posted by sundaygrundle on January 01, 2010 at 02:50 PM

Another Rypien Ripper! Great fight with Rips once again proving 2 hands are better than 1

Posted by ted5sam on January 01, 2010 at 03:19 PM

How could anyone call this fight a draw? All you have to do is look at the 2 fighters at the end to know it was not even close. Two thumbs-up for rypien.

Posted by gottago on January 01, 2010 at 06:10 PM

Unbelievable. I shed tears of joy. Yes the St Louey crowd was shocked and awed. Rypien is sporting 2 illegal weapons on the ends of his arms. I actually think the Ripper called the bout due to the damage he inflicted. Look at Rippers head turn towards the zebras at the end. THe nose was mashed with the quick flurry in the middle of the bout then it was all over when Jansens lid flew off with a bomb. All the respect to Cam. Excellent fighter but he'll think twice about dropping them next time Ripper takes the ice.

Posted by Lemon on January 02, 2010 at 02:32 PM

complete and total ripper domination

Posted by dial 9-1-1 on January 02, 2010 at 03:00 AM

Great fight and by no means a 10-8 round, but Rypien had some stunning blows (primarily with his left) and the evidence is all over Janssen's nose. The stunned look on everyone's face in the arena--Janssen included, tells it all. There's no way this could be scored any other way than a "W" for Rypien. Janssen is the type of guy who will get pummelled for 30 seconds and then win the take-down, and feel that is enough reason to showboat to the penalty box. Complete ass-clown. Be sure to ice the ego, Janssen. It will help keep the bruising to a minimum.

Posted by ILikeWater on January 02, 2010 at 05:24 PM

Nice scrap. Rypien clearly /w more effective hits.

Posted by Sharpy2525 on January 09, 2010 at 01:29 PM

Rypien isnt just loved by canuck fans only, he was named pound for pound best fighter in the league by many anaylysts. Its shocking how more fighters in the league dont use that fore arm block as a defense. This is one of the best tillies of the year but rypien takes it for quality of blows landed. Of course his size limits the quality of heavy weights he takes on, but its only a matter of time before a big heavy weight name and him muck it up. Just for him to stay on his feet fighting guys twice his size is remarkable, let alone landing quality shots doing so. Lots of heavy weights are gonna stay away from him to avoid any risk of embarrassment. They will probably only fight him out of neccessity rather than for the sport of scrapping. By the way, as big and powerful as boogard is, all he has is a huge slow right hand that rypien is smart enough to get in as tight as he can or if not use his fore arm block to avoid getting KO'd. IT wouldnt suprise me to see rypien hang in there against a big slow heavy weight like boogard. A guy like laraque is the one to worry about, throws both hands with decent speed and really works guys around in fights.

Posted by REVxRAGE on January 09, 2010 at 08:25 PM

bruiseyoureye first of all rypien landed more puches and most of janssens were blocked by rypien or missed and you said he won only because of the tape..... are u ******** stupid did you even see where the tape was, it was on his wrist wheere it didnt even matter if it was on his knucles thats a different story. and dont be saying that hes this pussyshit little twarp when he has won the most fights in the nhl this year all against bigger guys that are 20-40 pounds heavier than him like janssen here and gill and that 610 atlanta guy, he is easily the toughest pound for pound fighter in the nhl if not the best overall, learn something about hockey and fighting before you speak next time buddy

Posted by Seanathon10 on January 10, 2010 at 07:49 PM

Rypien owned in this fight!

Posted by vangodard28 on June 29, 2011 at 03:49 PM

I hate how the St.Louis commentator was so biased against Rypien. Rypiens totally feeding Janssen rights and all he could say was that Rypiens helmet was off. And then when Janssen would attempt a punch and miss he totally make it out like it landed and make a huge deal out of it.

Posted by rangersfan10 on May 01, 2010 at 06:27 PM

it was a great fight.W Rypien

Posted by thethingy13 on April 25, 2010 at 12:19 PM

Posted by vancity787 on January 25, 2013 at 11:53 PM

Rypien was fantastic. He wins, no question.

Posted by lduerksen on December 31, 2009 at 07:51 PM

Rypien did well again. Bad, bad rule on the wrist being taped

Posted by bloodchurn on January 01, 2010 at 06:04 PM

Posted by dorian on January 02, 2010 at 06:24 PM

Good fight. Draw.

Posted by remhead on January 01, 2010 at 07:38 PM

Rypien reminds me of Stock...undersized, quick hands, good balance ,andenergetic but no real punching power..the worst Rypien does is give bloody nose or fat lip his punches never slow anyone down and certainly never drops anyone

Posted by CocoQuaker7 on January 02, 2010 at 07:13 AM

Good bout. Both these guys are tough as hell.

Posted by LilHockeyGirl on April 15, 2010 at 07:12 PM

Wow, good fight. I say a draw. Even though Janssen is beaten up, Rypien had his wrist taped and if it was from the previous game or not, taped is taped.

Draw all the way in a great scrap. The manlove for RR continues; how do all you people know the tape on the thumb didn't contribute to Janssen's cut? Rules are rules, and RR being a Capuke, feels no need to follow them. ----- dbhof--you really shouldn't invest all your fantasies and dreams in RR. Good a little fighter as he is, he will get his head handed to him (again) in the future. It's the way of the world. --- dbhof--RR was thoroughly bested by Douglas Murray and Jeremy Reich, to name a few. I don't consider Brandon Prust to be anything more than an average middleweight with a big heart. I called this one a draw, which is a supportable opinion. Most people here are aware that "realism" and "common sense" in your books is code for agreeing with your Capukeluv drivel. "Punk"??--I'm probably old enough to be your father, although I certainly wouldn't admit it if it was so. Battles of wit with an unarmed opponent do get boring after a bit... ----- dbhof--rationalize all you want--RR lost the fights I mentioned and it's kind of sad to see you making excuses for him (to be sure, he wins way more than he loses, and you should be able to leave it at that). and now, dementia and cataracts join the list of problems for people who disagree with your hero-worship of the punks from the Worst Coast. Unoriginal namecalling and potty jokes, the last refuge of those who can't argue.

Posted by wetstick on December 31, 2009 at 08:30 PM

I don't know what fight you were watching but janssen landed more shots and harder shots, lil rick only landed his usual light jabs WIN GOES TO BIG CAM JANSSEN and stop whining about lil rick getting tossed out, he knows the rules.... tootoo knows to remove the tape off his hands before he scraps

Posted by ctstl691 on January 17, 2010 at 06:42 AM

Rypien had tape on his hand, Janssen got hit with weak punches to his nose while Rypien got destroyed my haymakers and uppercuts

Posted by davebrown21 on January 05, 2010 at 09:38 PM

two willing guys. i cant decide if i like rypien's style or not. the blocking thing gets to me, but i have to agree its effective, and i do like the heart he shows. he gets the nod for the more punches landing in this tilt. i didnt think it was a 9 fight tho.

Posted by Oil Can Henry on January 01, 2010 at 09:34 PM

Very good fight - thought it was close, but Rypien did hurt Janssen with a couple of his punches. Slight edge to Rypien.

Posted by tomales2 on January 01, 2010 at 04:18 PM

I can't stand Janssen, and Rypien won this fight but my God people he isn't the second coming. The bandwagon is loaded up and dripping with hyperbole. Try not to wet your pants at the mere mention of his name and recognize that he's an excellent fighter, but a light weight puncher and that's about it.

Posted by booterbuilder on January 01, 2010 at 10:08 PM

If your reasoning for a 'winner' in a fight is a KO or TKO, you could reason that an extension of that is 'damage'. Blood definitly denotes 'damage'. And yes Rick is the second comming. This is a hockey fight website, and he is a real fighter. Win Rypien.

Posted by samtheman on January 02, 2010 at 01:44 PM

Great fight. I think these are the top 2 pound for pound fighters in the league. Slight edge to Rypien who seemed to be landing more.

Posted by piney on January 01, 2010 at 10:43 PM

Cam got in some licks but Rypien wins. this one is gonna make this seasons top 10.

Posted by Radiotalker on January 02, 2010 at 12:03 AM

Janssen did better than the bloody nose would indicate, but a clear win for Rypien.

Posted by WarriorEnforcer on September 29, 2010 at 09:39 PM

I hate Janssen. Credit for fighting but he's just a scumbag.

Posted by bigdog2007 on January 02, 2010 at 12:32 PM

Rypien dominates likes Carkner pounding Orr's face to hamburger!!! Two tough bastards. Rypien is amazing at switching hands mid punch. Leafs Suck.

Posted by bam932 on January 01, 2010 at 05:02 PM

Why don't we just give Rypien the "fighter of the year award" already?

Posted by Richterfan on January 02, 2010 at 10:45 AM

FOTYC!!! What a slugfest! Rypien is simply amazing with his speed and ability to switch hands. That last right by Rypien really smoked Janssen who was throwing some great punches of his own. Win to Rypien but props to Janssen for making it a great fight for the fans.

Posted by looseandstupid on January 02, 2010 at 12:21 AM

ok folks...lets tell it how it is... rypien won this wasn't a landslide by any means...but the mere fact he landed the one big blow to bust up janssen's nose is good enough for the win in a close fight... secondly...janssen is one tough dude...the busted nose didn't faze him and he kept on swinging, although his timing was a little messed up and he could never find a rythym against a very game rypien... a lot of people on this site wanted to see rypien fight janssen, and he came through big time against a bigger and stronger opponent...i think we can now say he legitimately belongs amongst the best middleweights... and people...of course he doesn't have the punching power of a boogard, mcgrattan, laraque etc...he's only 170 pounds... but his heart is as big as any of the big dudes.... he's a fun fighter to watch...and the fact he hasn't been demolished in a fight (except Staubitz, and yes i know he lost to Reich and Murray) speaks volumes about his ability... if these two fought again, Janssen could very well come out on top...but at least we now know that Rypien can compete with a bigger fighter who is a good fighter...

Posted by Zizzer on January 05, 2010 at 11:52 PM

Edge to Rypien, but don't overhype the bleeding.

Posted by bobb on January 01, 2010 at 12:03 AM

Amazing fight with Janssen getting the early jump on Ripper, with the latter taking over the fight in the end. Cheap ejection and penalty with the tape deal, but best fight I've seen this year.

Posted by djh700 on January 01, 2010 at 01:10 AM

Ripper all the way. Have fun with the shield on in your next game punching bag.

Posted by chad420 on January 02, 2010 at 06:13 PM

the ripper successfully defends his middleweight can this not be a 10....wft do u guys think a 10 is?!?!

Posted by rocky7482 on January 01, 2010 at 08:41 AM

not close....janssen was game but was no match here....

Posted by DuffyBank on January 01, 2010 at 03:07 PM

Few of cam's early blows landed on anything other than air or helmet, big swings though. The first big right by Janssen misses completely. It wasn't until his third wirlwind wind up that he finally connected. Rypien with controlled fists wailing inside on Jansen and then a monster to send the helmet flying. the inside speed of Rypien short throws is amazing. Not even close, Rypien by a nose.

Posted by Rick16 on December 31, 2009 at 08:19 PM

sick fight!! janssen landed that first beauty right, but just got pumped after that. i actually thought it was a left that busted up his nose... hard to tell though because the punches were coming fast and furious! terrible rule on the 5 min major for rypien having his wrist taped. win rypien... gave this scrap a 10

Posted by BigBadBruins68 on January 04, 2010 at 10:27 AM

Hell of a fight, Rypien landed a few more big ones though and gets the edge, the only bad part is that the damn line-os had to break it up when they did, there was plenty of fight left in both guys.

Posted by muskokadangler on January 01, 2010 at 05:28 PM

YEA BABY!!!!! I have been waiting for this for a while.........Janssen is Stronger but The Ripper gets the win>>Landed more ...... I can't believe someone called it a TKO!!!!! I do understand some calling it a draw but they should slow it down and watch it a couple times>>> Ripper wins and again WE ALL win.......... THANKS to the dude who started this Site!!!!!!!!! You Rock Buddy!!!!!

Posted by Nesquik on December 31, 2009 at 08:00 PM

Just to be clear, Rypien didn't receive a match penalty for having his hand taped. He was given the extra minutes to make Janssen feel better about getting his ass kicked by a guy with sprained thumb.

Posted by Bensonator27 on January 01, 2010 at 03:20 PM

Great fight. Both threw bombs. The fact that Rypien can throw and block punches that fast is amazing, it shows that no one can match his fighting skill. Slight edge to Rypien.

Posted by GCM on December 31, 2009 at 07:48 PM

Rypien does it again and just destroys Janssen. I'll give it up to Janssen for throwing bombs himself but he missed quite a few. He's got a chin though. Rypien wins via TKO (Doctor Stoppage :P) I'd be hard pressed to believe Janssen could be argued for in this fight with the way he was bloodied. The tape on Rypien's wrist and partially over his thumb point was an obvious non-issue and didn't factor in at all.

Posted by chicama50 on January 01, 2010 at 05:28 PM

After watching Janssen beat up Hordichuk the last couple years it was nice to see Rypien beat the snot out of him. BS call on the match penatly after. That rule needs to be changed.

Posted by J Douglas on January 01, 2010 at 11:51 PM

Those reviewers who rated this a 'draw' must either be hopelessly biased in favour of Janssen, or have trouble distinguishing a miss from a connecting blow. Janssen threw lots of punches, but nearly all hit the helmet, the shoulder, or thin air. Only a couple connected, and none of these seemed to have any impact. Rypien connected on a lot of his punches, and the damage was obvious. You could have missed some of this watching the fight once in real time (like the Blues' announcers making the play-by-play call), but Rypien's dominance is obvious with the three views we have in this great video clip.
