Posted by wildfan4eva on February 19, 2008 at 03:26 PM

Funny...every time a Wild guy hits someone when their down everyone always sais..what a bi t ch ..or what a cheap little girl...but with downey..no one sais shi t.. I will actually give the better fighter a win regardless if he hit someone when their down..its a fight...not a love making contest !! Win for Downey

While Downey wins the fight hands down, he initiated it in a completely #[email protected]% manner. As someone who was at the game and seated fairly close to where the fight happened Downey came up behind Lappy and initiated the fight from behind, pushing Lappy in close to the boards before he even got turned around. I'm not saying that Lappy would have won this fight straight-up, but it would have taken a miracle for Downey to lose the fight after the manner in which it was initiated (hence the instigator and misconduct he also received). Also, the punches after Lappy had clearly turtled and conceeded the fight were absolutely gutless. I hope that Downey tries this same garbage against one of the true heavywieghts in the league later this year and sees so many stars that he thinks they're playing old time hockey on the pond at night.

Downey sticking up for Lidstrom, who was knocked out of the game earlier by Laperriere. Easy win for Downey.

Posted by Lister100 on February 19, 2008 at 05:43 PM

Laperriere has to stop fighting. He's too old or something. I haven't seen him win a fight a in the last two years. He's embarrassing himself, his team and his people. Save the fighting for those that still care about winning Laperriere.

Posted by crazybearfan on February 25, 2008 at 05:05 PM

Downey should've laughed after that one. It's not call no-class, It's called kicked ass.

Posted by stevepicker on February 20, 2008 at 09:20 PM

Downey takes care of business for the Wings. So glad he's with the team. Adds a lot of toughness the Euros don't have.Well, they're tough, they just suck at fighting. Downey fights at the right time with the right player, who usually deserves it. Like Lappy.... Disabling an elite , clean player like Lindstrom is no achievement, it's a bozo move with the elbow to the face. . he got what he earned and deserves some more.

Posted by lipe_red_wings on February 19, 2008 at 06:53 PM

and the fighting is winner from downey. and the red wings won this fighting.

Downey overpowers Lappi...

Good for Downey sticking up for Lidstrom. Hurt the number one dman in the league and youll pay for it.

Downey has looked good in his fights as of late. This one is no exception, Laperriere didn't really do much in this one. He wanted to go again with Laperriere later on in the game too. Must've felt he had some unfinished business. Win clearly goes to downey

Posted by Poop Jack Pappy on February 19, 2008 at 06:37 PM

Lappy is a gamer but Downey beats him down. Winner Downey

Posted by bluemang on February 19, 2008 at 02:34 PM

Gotta hand it to downey...the guy fights old school and says the right things in the lockerroom. He LIVES by the code. He knows his job and is fearless out there. His last 2 fights have really proved his worth to the wings. It was great seeing La Pussy-aire turtle at the end from the flurry of lefts Downey was pummeling him with....way to go Ian. Sidenote...McCarty just had a hattrick with the GR Griffens. Fully expect him to be called up by the 26th. Way to go Aaron. Don't know where the wings would be without him this year. Can't wait to see him and Big Mac play together on a checking line in the playoffs. For the season..Downey is 6-0-3 according to HF.com stats. He'll probably end up with a few more this weekend....especially with the Flames coming up. Love those calgary games. Gotta say that his signing this season has been a huge success. Ken Holland is a wizard.

Posted by dumby on February 19, 2008 at 03:03 PM

Lappy should learn how to fight... even shane doan kicked hiss ass...

Posted by basil73 on February 19, 2008 at 10:08 PM

Lappi is a big p......y. He likes throwing elbows at non-fighters and then gets completely squashed by not quite the best enforcer in the league.

Posted by yakoda on February 19, 2008 at 05:47 PM

downey is a beast

Posted by tattooedkingpin on February 20, 2008 at 03:47 PM

Lapperriere got his ass kicked. he deserved it for that cheap hit on Lidstrom. Downey put him on his punkass again early in the 3rd period too. He'll get more the next time these two teams meet.

Downey overpowers Lappy who has no choice but to turtle. Clear win Downey, who was looking to punish Lappy for putting a hit on Lidstrom (that knocked him out of the game).

Posted by jimbo1026 on February 19, 2008 at 11:50 AM

Lappy got the beat-down he asked for.

Posted by The Peach on February 19, 2008 at 01:34 PM

irish downey is looking huge the past few weeks. steps it up, puts lappy down like a beetch.

Posted by Avs Junkie on February 20, 2008 at 02:51 PM

Lappy got beat down and maybe even turtled a bit, but his hit on Lidstrom looked clean to me. This rivalry never died, it was just dormant for a while. Both teams are now fully awake. I hope they meet in the playoffs so Lappy can get a chance to redeem himself a bit.

Posted by KORPI24 on February 19, 2008 at 03:18 PM

The announcers and apparently the idiots here that say Lappy's hit was clean did not see the elbow to the jaw, how the hell do you think Lidstrom was knocked silly, because his knee was twisted ? Ridiculous, I wanted to go through the tv and pummel them when they said it was clean. This being said, I love the fact that the Avs tried to rough up the Wings, every team should do it to them, because Laperriere is the only guy in the league that the Wings can beat up.

Posted by renaudh on February 19, 2008 at 12:57 PM

You can't touch Lidstrom. Is that clear now ?

Posted by trpaulson on February 19, 2008 at 06:06 PM

Downey by a mile. This all started because of a dirty hit by Laperriere on Nik Lidstrom who left the game. Downey beat Lapuke down like the dog he is. Later in the game when Downey went after him again he was jumped from behind by Cody McLeod. I thought when the Avs got rid of Claude LePew, Forsberg and Foote, they got got rid of all the backhitters. Guess they got a whole new crop.

Posted by mm1160 on February 19, 2008 at 10:25 PM

Lapp needs to stop fighting all together, he has become the league punching bag.

Posted by Spanky_Jazz on February 19, 2008 at 02:12 PM

What? Laperriere cheap shots Downey? Tell me how. Tell me how. Downey came after Laperriere for his CLEAN hit on Lidstrom. And then Downey wins the fight, obviously, and makes himself look like an arrogant prick when he continues to throw punches when Lappy goes down and turtles. The Wings play dirty, whether it's taking cheap shots at someone during a fight, taking a dive, running interference, or having Holmstrom get both of his feet in the crease and force goalies to look at his big ass. You've lost all respect you had for Laperriere? I've lost all my respect for the entire Red Wings organization and you.

Posted by mikebflorida on February 19, 2008 at 02:06 PM

Definite win for Downey.

Posted by Sasky001 on February 19, 2008 at 11:07 PM

Nothing better than seeing Crappy get fed his lunch.

Posted by plabute on February 19, 2008 at 03:19 PM

WIN DOWNEY...OWNED Lappy has really been getting handled this year, which is disappointing after such a strong showing last year. I'd say he's gotta be up for most disappointing fighter of the year, he's my leading candidate anyway.

Posted by SirYohans on February 19, 2008 at 07:24 PM

C'mon Lappy! You got more fight in u than this... Win Downey & embarrassment for Lappy.

Posted by gw19lax on February 19, 2008 at 10:46 PM

Win for Downey, the kid can throw with the best of them and he owned Laperriere...but I was dissapointed to read that the Wings thought the hit on Lidstrom was dirty. Nothing at all dirty about the hit, and one of the few times I have ever seen Lidstrom get caught in a position like that. Agree with whomever said it, you lay a hit on a franchise player and you expect to have to answer for it....but nothing at all dirty about it

Posted by hockey174ever on February 19, 2008 at 11:18 AM

Laperriere is looking for a fight, he cheap shots Downey. Downey was just protecting his teamates. Good work. I have lost all respect for Laperriere.

Posted by Blackhawk23 on February 19, 2008 at 01:44 PM

Downey with another win, I love lappy he has as much hart as anyone, but Downey slapped him in this one. Nice to see the Wings and Avs goin at it again.

Posted by Nightmare on February 19, 2008 at 03:58 PM

Downey sticking up for his captain, psyches up his team. Issues out a beating too...This is exactly why the NHL will always need fighting. Take away fighting in this instance and the game gets REAL ugly. No question.

Posted by Ragtop1day on February 19, 2008 at 04:49 PM

good thing Downey isn't bigger - he is one tough sob

Posted by markw on February 20, 2008 at 12:33 PM

laperriere went turttle just like another former teammate, hopefully Lap's does'nt make a career out of bad hits!

Posted by GoSharkies on February 19, 2008 at 12:41 PM

Good to see that pest Laperrierre getting what he deserved.

Posted by hkplayer13 on February 19, 2008 at 03:07 PM

Didn't they square off again later in the game? What was the outcome? Although I wasn't "at the game" it looked to me like they were both looking at each other when the exchanges started..... give me a brake avs fans. Downey with the win.

Posted by smichaels10 on February 19, 2008 at 08:49 PM

It's nice to see someone stick up for the Red Wing stars.

Posted by rjwillis1812 on February 19, 2008 at 01:20 PM

I was at the game and Downey jumped Lappy from behind. No wonder he beat him. I'd like to see a square off between the two and then we can see who fairs better. Downey with a bitch move in my eyes.

Posted by oakley on February 20, 2008 at 02:15 PM

lappy gets slapped silly here....good to see

Posted by UnderdogDMG on February 21, 2008 at 08:53 PM

Why would anyone throw a heavy high right elbow to Lidstrom? He's one of the cleanest most gentlemanly players in the league. Props to Downey he beat laperriere like a snare drum. Im kinda ticked at Cheli. You need to be there foryaboy. Downey will be there no doubt for his teammate's and hopefully Mccarty will be there also. GO WING"S

Posted by cbjacketfan on February 19, 2008 at 02:27 PM

Way to turtle Laps. It is nice to see the Wings and Av's get ugly with one and other again. Maybe we will get more of this in round 1 of the playoffs.

Posted by Wheelz on February 19, 2008 at 09:56 PM

Great fight by Downey and finally nice to see Detroit have someone that sticks up for their teammates. After reading some of these posts, I can see why Wings fans are not liked much. The hit on Nick was a clean hit, just got caught in a bad position and Laperriere paid for the hit just like he should have. This is WHY fighting NEEDS to stay in hockey, clean hit or not, you hit a "star" player, you pay the price. Same thing would happen if Sakic got hit like that.

Posted by UKRedWing on February 19, 2008 at 01:08 PM

turtle time! clear win downey! atta boy!

Posted by redwingrocket on February 19, 2008 at 12:52 PM

Downey is the guy we need in Detroit to stick up for our markee players. Great job.

Posted by porschesw on February 20, 2008 at 07:17 PM

Downey is sick. only been a hockey (and wings) fan a couple years, but it doesn't take a history lesson to know that downey is just what detroit needed to back up their stars.

Posted by killmachine on February 19, 2008 at 01:07 PM

Good ridence to bad rubbish,, Lap should get it twice for running his mouth so much

Posted by big-walleye on February 22, 2008 at 06:07 AM

Cheap shot or not, you take a run at a captain and you should expect pay back. Fair fight - clean win Downey.

Posted by curly on February 20, 2008 at 11:49 AM

Downey was a bit motivated for the right reasons - sticking up for an injured teammate. Granted he was fired up and instigated the fight in a way that won't please everyone here but lap**** had a second chance later in the game when he skated into Downey in front of the Redwings bench to start the fight right. Didn't seem like he was very interested. The punches after lappy turtled were probably not "proper" but deserved after he dribbled Lid's head into the boards with his elbow.

To my man from Shelburne, Downey!

Posted by Pickle2728 on February 19, 2008 at 07:38 PM

Holy Tornado Taters! Have not seen 'ol Downey throw like that in a while. Must have been from all the beers at Luke's Bar in Texas. WIN = DOWNEY

Posted by iflynk on February 19, 2008 at 02:36 PM

All Downey all the time! Loved when Downey stood like a rock in the 3rd when Lappy ran him (high, as usual) and landed on the seat of his pants! Would have liked to have seen Babcock KO the demoted Granato, too! Spanky Jazz - learn the game! You have Red Wing envy, my man...

A great Laperriere beatdown. Looked alot like claude in the turtle postion

Posted by lilthug3305 on February 20, 2008 at 05:26 PM

Downey the best thing since havin McCarty who was also a best. Great fight and nice beat down.

Posted by bluesrule08 on February 19, 2008 at 05:22 PM

Posted by YzVlad on February 20, 2008 at 12:21 AM

Now bring back McCarty and the wings will have some respect again.

Posted by zkrisp on February 19, 2008 at 02:47 PM

Posted by stevkrause on February 19, 2008 at 03:03 PM

Great go by Downey - absolute ass-whipping and a true turtle move by Lappy

Posted by gongerhockey5 on February 19, 2008 at 04:32 PM

Downey dished out some ass whoopin

Posted by spartacus13 on February 19, 2008 at 02:50 PM

ahahahaha that was a nice turtle move by laperriere, downey by a long shot

Posted by goodprankfarva on February 19, 2008 at 03:06 PM

Lappy is obviously turtle enough for the turtle club. May have been a clean hit on Lidstrom but the fact remains is that hes the captain and he was knocked out of the game. No matter what team it is any enforcer will stick up for their Captain. And the ones crying about Downey doin the work, this is hockey. Hockey at its best.

Posted by DetroitIan on February 19, 2008 at 08:17 PM

Man I love Downey. He's been such a great addition for the Red Wings. The guy has such heart. And he wins almost every fight he's in. I love watching him play. He represents the Winged Wheel like a warrior. Great to watch him pummel Laperriere.

Posted by MackMittens on February 19, 2008 at 02:51 PM

Aaron Downey shows the right way to get an instigator and proceeds to earn every second of his extra penalty pummeling Laperriere.

Posted by quetico on February 20, 2008 at 12:00 AM

I was at the game. What the video does not show is that Downey dropped his gloves about 15' behind Lappy, approached him from behind, and then basically jumped him. It was like the Bertuzzi-Moore incident, except Downey chose to sucker punch him versus tackling him. Granted he needed to respond to the Lidstrom check, but you still have to square up to the guy, no? And the punches after he fell were BS too. I wish the teams played again this season so that we could see an honest square off, like it's supposed to be done.

Posted by preds321 on February 19, 2008 at 02:54 PM

Downey with the win here but he is an idiot if he thinks Laperriere's hit on Lidstrom was dirty. It was a perfectly clean check. Another instance of someone taking exception to a good, clean hit by responding with fists. It's getting out of hand. Sticking up for your teammates is one thing, but this is quite another. I'm sorry Lidstrom got hurt, but that happens sometimes, and the hit was not dirty

Posted by poopies on February 19, 2008 at 12:23 PM

I'd almost give Lappy the win just for the beautiful hit that sparked this.

Posted by whackthatman on February 19, 2008 at 12:41 PM

pretty easy win for Downey

Posted by drgill on February 19, 2008 at 12:11 PM

Nice turtle by Laperriere. Claude Lemieux would be proud.

Posted by hrngmprd on February 19, 2008 at 11:47 PM

I'd like to know who the morons are who picked Laperriere. It's gotta be Colorodo fans who like players who turtle- ring a bell, eh claude? Winner: Downey

Posted by esteef on February 19, 2008 at 01:23 PM

What? Everyone giving a Red Wing a clear win? Are you guys sure Lappy didn't slip or anything? Maybe he had a cold and was under the weather? Win Downey.

downey with a beatdown

Posted by TBLightningGuru on March 16, 2008 at 12:49 AM

heres the penalty breakdown. Downey 5 mins for fighting. and Laperierre gets a hug from his mommy for receiving a beatdown.

Posted by ROCK HAWK on February 19, 2008 at 01:49 PM

Downey with perfect technique.. pulls the helmet off Lappy and pounds him into the turtle with many lefts.
