Other Penalties: McCabe received a minor and game misconduct for instigating a fight in final five minutes of third period or overtime; Gudas received a major for charging.
Conflicted. Part of me sees a guy throwing a solid check and happens to hit the head. Part of me thinks Gudas has a reputation for a reason and he will be suspended for contact to the head. When I grew up this was a guy making someone pay for having his head down, especially for that long. In today's NHL this is most likely a suspension. Would have been nice to have a tougher Sabre around to at least give a good showing in the fight. By the way, he barely skated towards him, so no way is this a charge.
Count me as conflicted too. If I didn't know who Gudas was, I'd have a lot of sympathy for him. He didn't aim where the head usually is. Most of the run up to the collision is made by the off-balance Catanecci, but you can't call charging on the guy who received the conversion of his kinetic energy (although it might be amusing in a "Stop Hitting Yourself" kind of way). Gudas could have stood perfectly still, anchored in place with a lowered shoulder shoulder, and the same thing would have happened. How long is a guy supposed to skate off balance with his head down that low? That being said: No benefit of the doubt. He did drop the shoulder at the end. Someone else might get a pass. Gudas does not.
Crap call...no major charging penalty. No Philly fan but the Ref's are targeting this guy because he's a hitter. Goudas may have mistimed the hit...that would get him a minor interference penalty. The hit itself was fine...shoulder hit, no stick, no elbow...any head contact was created by the offensive skater's bad form...head down, body low through the middle of the ice...just plain stupid...can anyone say Scott Stevens. The fight was a lame draw!
Sabres rookie Catanecci pays the price for having his head down. Gudas is a POS without question and McCabe answers the hit. Draw. I wish it was Deslauriers who answered the hit. Gudas would still be sleeping.
did no one see manning cross check McCabe, when McCabe was going after gudas? not a flyer fan ,but good open ice hit by gudas no need for any further action, next time the kid will keep his head up! cant believe im saying this but the sabres need a fighter!
young mccabe tries to avenge hit on catenacci and got into his 1st nhl fight with gudas.he was doing quite well but the fight was short as they wrestled each other to the ice quickly...draw radko's 2nd fight of the game and of the season as well
imagine how we'd all feel if fighting was gone and everyone just stood there and yelled at Radko as he got 'asked' to leave the ice after a pretty filthy hit like that... but alas, it's NOT gone as McCabe gets in there to at least show there's still some backbone left in this league.... for now. only because he was backing up a teammate and keeps the spirit alive is why I'm giving the ever so slight nod.. #29 FTW
Its the NHL, keep your head up. Good hit by Gudas, thats hockey, no room for pussies crying about getting hit when they think they can skate around and not be touched. Winner all around Gudas,, awesome hit.
gudas with a few good punches and ultimately getting his jersey up over his face and taking him to the ice following the huge hit
Another flyer with a head shot. expect nothing from the nhl. classless all the way.
Fuck these announcers what a bunch of douche bags. Cheap hit don't try to sugar coat it. I can't wait for the next game someone will kick Gudas' ass
I'm just wondering which hit he is gonna get suspended for
Gudas will be suspended and rightfully so. McCabe is bent over and tangled with another player and doesn't change his position at all. Gudas comes in with a very obvious cheap shot. As for the fight I give it a weak draw
I, for one, welcome Gudas' boneheaded attempts to increase the chances of his imminent walloping when he faces the Sabres again.
I don't might guys playing hard but considering the time, score and vulnerable opponent, Gudas was overzealous in ringing the bell of his crouching opponent. Absolutely protect yourself better from goon Gudas but the guy is one of the most marginal hitters in the game these days. I could see him sitting out a few games for this latest malicious act. The contact on Foligno was also questionable.
drw but good for mcabe standing for his team mate
Agree that Gudas is a POS. He is ALWAYS taking cheap shots and needs to be permanently suspended. He's a fuck. I'm all about a fair fight - Gudas looks for unfair fights.
Pretty classless hit if you ask me.
McCabe does what he can given the situation that was dumped in his lap, but he wouldn't be Sabres' first choice if they had one. An uneventful draw ensues. Gudas is a puke.
The old school lover in me tells 43 to not take 7 strides over the middle of the ice looking at his feet. The new school in me tells Gudas to lay off making a hit like that. The fight fan in me calls this a crappy 2 but, props given to McCabe for coming in immediately.
gudas is a dirty motherfucker, and he will get more residuals for that hit... Lucic17, he had his head down, because he was being ridden by some other orange faggot. He couldn't have been more vulnerable, and gudas hit him anyway...
What a great f-ing hit !!!! bylsma should teach his young team to keep their heads up. Its the NHL, your allowed to check, look it up. Oh and Gudas popped him on the way down. Love it . Wooly mammoth? you never played hockey obviously. And Philly aint scared of .........buffalo?? Hahahahahaha,.
