Hoping that McGrattan is OK and fully recovers. McGrattan was dominating the fight until he was dropped. I don't think either man will remember this fight fondly.

Posted by CG44 on November 04, 2018 at 10:06 PM

Amazing fight, brutal ending but what a show put on by both fighters. I would gladly buy them both a beer.

Posted by NotoriousT on January 20, 2016 at 12:18 AM

WTF?!!! I was not expecting that. I hope McGrattan is fine & there is no serious damage & still comes back after this. Stock in Maggio just went up after this one though

Posted by scorp1on on January 21, 2016 at 04:10 PM

McGrattan dominated in the beginning but Maggio weathered the onslaught with some energy in reserve and turned the tables once McGrats started wilting. I don't fault Maggio for letting him go. He had a chance to bail on a high note and did so, sliding around the linesman. I doubt he knew that he was out cold at the time... In fact, I doubt that any fighter would ever assume they knocked out Brian McGrattan.

Posted by sedge47 on January 21, 2016 at 04:31 AM

Harsh to criticise Maggio for letting McG fall/not helping him up.....did you see how many he took to the head in that fight? As others have said, he was taking a sound beating up until the last 5 seconds or so, and it was impressive enough that he was even still standing and throwing. Glad to hear the big man is OK though.

Posted by FistofFury on January 20, 2016 at 12:28 AM

Maggio just let him drop flat on his face. What a turd.

Posted by rocky 1 on January 20, 2016 at 06:06 PM

Grats was winning by a mile before getting tagged but get tagged he did.Never seen that happen to him before.I guess that's what happens when you fight with no defense as Grats does sooner or latter you get tagged. He will come back and beat the Jesus out of that kid!Maggios face pretty messed up as well!

Posted by The Gaffer on January 20, 2016 at 08:11 PM

McGrattan with his usual, chin in the air and see who can punch each other in the face the hardest style, never hides or plays peekaboo, but he got tagged good, happens to the best, Probert/Ewen

Posted by filthynumber1 on January 20, 2016 at 12:54 AM

Big erns no fear fighting style was bound to get to him. Dan was duck n chucking like a champ and lands and douzy. If you look at his face he wasn't even looking where he was throwing. (Don't blame him either, considering the opponent)... Turned out to work this time. Rematch goes diff imo, prolly never happen tho Win dan. Tough to watch

Posted by 47knuckle on January 21, 2016 at 08:55 AM

Can't help but notice the idiot Dad in the foreground pumping his arms in the air while McGratton is laid out on the ice. And who appears to be his little daughter standing to the right of him doing the same thing.

Posted by bigtimecrime on January 20, 2016 at 02:11 PM

Oh man. Tough to watch. I have loved McGrattan's style and beyond that - liked him for the way he conducted himself off of the ice. He has quietly helped a lot of players off of the ice. One of the good guys for sure. His career was already ending - but it most likely did last night. Best wishes for a full recovery. Gratts can hold his head high in my opinion.

Posted by pooleyacht on January 20, 2016 at 10:34 AM

Gah, you hate to see it. I've always been a Gratts fan, poor dude. Might be time to hang em up.

Posted by McGuffin on January 20, 2016 at 12:36 AM

Well, that's one of the scariest hockey knockouts I've seen. Out before he face planted directly on the ice. That's a career ending and life threatening injury. Can you imagine this in the NHL? It would be on every sports channel and banning fighting would yet again be a topic of conversation. Let's hope McGrattan is somehow, some way alright. Tough way to make a living. We've seen too many of these guys have difficulties or worse. Best of luck to McGrattan.

Posted by Don Berry on January 20, 2016 at 05:53 PM

Ok Brian, time to wrap this thing man! you made you money and won a lot of fights! Take care now!! God Bless

Posted by The Mad House on January 19, 2016 at 10:35 PM

Wow, this is very scary and very upsetting McGratts is an all time favorite of mine But it may be time to hang them up. I'd love to see him return but at his age, all the fights he's been in and all the damage he's had done to that face and noggin, it probably won't happen Get well soon, Big Ern Praying for ya

Posted by Walt on January 22, 2016 at 11:54 AM

Yikes. That was brutal.

Posted by mo_town on January 23, 2016 at 01:00 PM

Best fight of the year

Posted by JoeBlue on January 20, 2016 at 07:48 PM

Wow. That fight had it all.

Posted by kranium62 on January 20, 2016 at 03:21 PM

That's one brutal knockout - reminds me of Stevie Mac dropping Raitis Ivanans (ending his career). With a wife and a nine-month-old kid, hope Brian wises up and walks away from a career we fight fans appreciate (hope he's saved some cash over the years as well).

Posted by dapwas20 on January 20, 2016 at 06:08 PM

FIGHT OF THE YEAR. Maggio lost every round but the last one which gave him the win.

Posted by doctorvegas on January 26, 2016 at 04:46 PM

hate it when one fighter is wearing a helmet and the other is not. glad to see mcgratton lose hise helmet and then get dropped.

Posted by bobsyouruncle on January 26, 2016 at 02:00 PM

Great fight... what a great comeback for the KO! Just goes to show the fights not over until its OVER!

Posted by Daysofcoleco on January 20, 2016 at 10:28 AM

He doesn't need to come back from that to face more of that. It was more than a fine career. ***Holy fuck the new clip shows one hell of a scrap. Maggio looked pretty battered his ownself.

Posted by slysi on January 30, 2016 at 09:45 AM

WOW ,what a comeback ! No holding back in that duke-out !

Posted by Buddy507 on January 21, 2016 at 07:15 AM

Holy Shit, what a tilt! Maggio with the KO but man did he pay the price to get it.

Posted by the kid 61 on January 26, 2016 at 03:48 PM

I'm a big fight fan but that ko was brutal. Two things learned here, as the ref always tell the fighters before a bout, protect yourself at all times, and the bigger they are the harder they fall. That young Maggio really connected to McGrattans jaw. Hope the kids alright. After seeing this fight several time brian left himself open to get ktfo. Even boogey man didn't hit him as had when he knocked him out. Hey brian can u say echl. Peluso, Gazdic, Reaves are shaking in their skates that they will face Maggio next year when they are sent down to the ahl.

Posted by xtraread on January 20, 2016 at 10:00 AM

Grats was really never a long distance fighter , he usually ended his fights early , age is a bumber

Posted by JF8492109 on January 23, 2016 at 08:19 PM

McGrattan total domination until the exchange. Nice right by Maggio caught him square on the chin and that'll get you every time. Big Ern one of my favorite fighters but the times he's been caught it's bc he grabs his opponents in the middle of the jerseys leaving their punching arm with full range of motion Boogaard, Orr, and Sugden all know first hand.

Posted by lets_go on January 26, 2016 at 08:40 PM

Are you not entertained! Are you not entertained!

Posted by travist on January 20, 2016 at 09:57 PM

glad to hear big ern is doing well after this scary-as-shit fight. never want to see this happen to anyone, especially to someone who has been through so much in his life... helluva fight by both, maggio was a bloody mess in his own right.

Posted by Charlie54 on March 13, 2016 at 10:31 PM

McGrattan was dominating before that last punch. Hope he recovers

Posted by Jim02351 on January 27, 2016 at 02:52 AM

Ton of punches both ways but only one was "on the button" and "BOOM!", lights out.

Posted by the clash on January 26, 2016 at 10:39 PM

Oddly enough it appeared to me McGrattan had the early advantage. Maggio ducked a hard right and the fight turned on that

Posted by nailz on January 20, 2016 at 09:27 AM

Sucks. I saw Gratts in Providence during his first year with Binghampton. Beat down Pbruins heavyweight Bob Parsons. Knew he was the real deal right away.

Posted by Viper207 on November 16, 2018 at 05:11 AM

I was sold before you said chaotic Brian McGratton fight. I literally didn't care who wins. So many fucking ouch moments. Very close until the KO. Daniel Maggio was legit tough. I'm all in on a 9 rating here.

Posted by DawgBeaTz on January 20, 2016 at 05:15 AM

Wtf Who Say draw??

Posted by baldhedjer on January 21, 2016 at 09:42 AM

Wow! So strange to see McGratten knocked out like that, but he did some damage of his own before getting knocked by that right.

Posted by ssully1618 on January 20, 2016 at 07:16 PM

Brutal to see that happen to anyone. It was a very good and close scrap. You can see by maggio's temple that mcgrattan had his shots too.

Posted by chris72gross on January 21, 2016 at 02:50 AM

McGratton was working Maggio over until the jaw dropper (pun intended). The best can be dropped by a well placed punch. Maggio shouldn't have let him drop on his face. Best wishes to you Brian, I hope you make a complete recovery.

Posted by bobafett5468 on January 26, 2016 at 09:16 PM

Great fight back and forth. Like it but can't help feel bad at the same time.

Posted by teejay on January 21, 2016 at 12:45 AM

Maggio with the knockout takes the win.

Posted by Jellyczar on January 30, 2016 at 04:45 PM

MCGrattan caught one full in the face. I am surprised because Maggio gets beat more than he wins.... Time has caught up with mcGratts... one of my favorites

Posted by Hkmert1 on January 22, 2016 at 07:52 PM

Live by the sword...die by the sword

Posted by Edsmo on January 20, 2016 at 10:43 AM

McGrattan seemed to be winning the fight, then Maggio knocked his helmet off and the tide changed. The knockout punch got McGrattan right on the button. Good night Irene. Set the cat and put the clock out.

Posted by oldtimebsfan on January 20, 2016 at 05:08 PM

Breathless after that .... old time rock'em sock'em ...

Posted by jerry s on January 21, 2016 at 05:24 AM

first of all I hope mcgrattan is alright that reminded me of the knock out of porros by orr and the face first landing big punch took mcgrattan out

Posted by Nothreat74 on January 19, 2016 at 11:43 PM

I like McGratton and I hope this isn't the end for him. Here's to a speedy recovery Big Ern

Posted by bfidel on April 17, 2016 at 11:18 PM

WOW. Great fight. Two guys just go at it. Lots of punches. Pretty close at first, but Maggio knocked out McGrattan. Damn.

Posted by von_swine on January 20, 2016 at 01:28 PM

well, the crowd loved it... regardless of any face to ice horror involved..(listen for the taunt at 0:32) that might be the hook that pulls this 'Vaudevillian' off the stage once & for all.. but, McG has always been a full-force or no force kinda fighter so.. seems apropos if this is the curtain drop on his anvil swinging career... #44 FTW & absolute KO p.s. Maggio was taking ABUSE in this one before getting off that silencer... super tilt.

Posted by Beach Bums on January 26, 2016 at 03:53 PM

Had that last punch not landed and the refs broke it up it would have been Mcscrapin. Just goes to show it ain't over till it's over. Hate to see it end that way.

Posted by thepiratemorgan on January 26, 2016 at 06:32 PM

Wow... What a Donnybrook.... If this doesn't score 10, what will?

My favorite fighter ever, sucks to see this. One of the classiest guys around as well. Hang em up Brian. What is with the fans? Most fans, home or away go quiet at times like this. Is San Antonio loaded with idiots? Class act #26 on the opposing team Rampage. He was the first one to get over to the bench as fast as possible and get the trainer. I can imagine there wasn't a player on the ice that enjoyed that. Maggio was beaten to a pulp as well, can't believe he was still standing.

McGratton meets his waterloo

Posted by yngblonde1 on January 20, 2016 at 09:41 AM

How could any retard vote draw or win for McGrattan. He must have voted for himself along with family members. He got destroyed, watch the damn video

Posted by fridge rules on January 19, 2016 at 10:52 PM

Pathetic fans. People get pumped with any KO, but this one is hard to watch. Especially with all the panic on the ice after it happened.

Posted by saint0wen on January 20, 2016 at 12:42 AM

This was quite even til the last punch. Then it got ugly. These "fans" are despicable.

Posted by Mounty in NC on January 20, 2016 at 08:59 PM

Grats was winning until the knockout punch..... We also got to see the type of class Maggio has as a fighter work real class else have tried to help Grats when he went down!

Posted by SURESHOT27 on January 20, 2016 at 11:49 AM

BANG! Maggio sould have held big Ern up instead of pulling him down. Heads up Maggio....Ern will get you back

Posted by riffraff on January 20, 2016 at 02:32 PM

Wonder if Andrew Alberts has seen this. What goes around comes around.

Posted by snowave on January 20, 2016 at 05:14 PM

damn... p.s. really lame fans to keep cheering.

Posted by FHgrad99 on January 21, 2016 at 01:47 AM

Very good and even fight until Maggio landed a bomb that turned out McGrattan's lights. After seeing how good of a fighter McGrattan was in the NHL, I would have never expected to see him get dropped like this.

Posted by Joe Rock on January 20, 2016 at 09:16 PM

Wow what a fight. Maggio's face full of blood and McGrattan gets KOed. These guys make a tough living while in the AHL. Hope Big Ern is okay, probably time to call it a day and retire as one of the best ever.

Posted by hkhk on January 19, 2016 at 11:27 PM

just wow , McGratts face first looked bad. The end of era ..

Posted by Titzmgee on January 19, 2016 at 10:49 PM

That was exactly why the nhl is getting rid of these heavy weight pro fighters. Sucks though I like Mcgratton

Posted by briggsy on January 20, 2016 at 05:52 PM

A no brainer...........I agree with The Mad House Heard Big Ern on the radio today. He said he is fine. Following protocol right now.

Posted by Great Murray on January 20, 2016 at 08:17 PM

Gratts was probably winning this one until the knock out. Geez...that was a Derrick Engelland style right hand. What a bomb. Caught McGratten coming in...he was out before he fell. Maggio should have tried to catch him though. Glad to hear all his tests were OK. Knowing McGratten there will be a rematch.

Posted by brko on January 20, 2016 at 01:35 AM

end of McG? end of fighting in hockey?

Posted by mygameworn on January 20, 2016 at 09:44 AM

Posted by devilsadvocate on January 20, 2016 at 04:16 AM

Can anyone say Nick Kypreos? I think Ryan Vandenbusche ended Kypreos' career in a eerily similar incident. The good news is Andrey Pedan of the Canucks also was knocked out cold by Stu Bickel with a punch that was even more devastating and Pedan has come back to fight again. Mind you, Pedan is a much younger guy.
