Boogaard got 5 games for a lesser hit. Let's see how many Phaneuf gets? I'll bet zero.

Posted by Bad Dawg on March 04, 2009 at 01:28 PM

Phaneuf is a chicken **** won't fight any real scrappers, wait till Ripper is back in Van.

Posted by Dave Brown HOF on March 05, 2009 at 02:17 PM

Phaneuf's a major pole smoker. Even though you live in that frozen cesspool of a city called Calgary, doesn't mean that you have reason or excuse to be such a douche. Draw!

Posted by forsberg21 on March 04, 2009 at 05:51 PM

Way to go Spezza! Dallas should look at this and be even more ashamed of themselfs, Modano especially.

Phaneuf is a first-class piece of trash, he fights with his visor all the time and elbow or shoulder he head hunts all the time. He lacks dignity, class, and respect for others. And he skates away from anybody that has a legitate shot at beating him.

Posted by REGZ88 on March 04, 2009 at 12:40 AM

Martell are you blind? Boogaard's hit was late his elbow connected directly with prust's head, it was a deliberate and premeditated, and it was in the dying moments of the game. Phaneuf's elbow never connected. Look at the video. It was all shoulder and the only contact with the elbow was on the follow through and it was to the body. Want proof? Pause it at 53 seconds...i dont see any elbow there... just good clean shoulder. Boogaard is a plug.

Posted by GSP09 on March 07, 2009 at 01:30 AM

Phaneuf is going to have to pay for his hits to the heads one day, he has to many of them since hes in the league, He's a head hunter. But who lives by the sword , dies by the sword. as for the fight not much there but I like Spezza 's attitude.

Posted by Jordybats99 on January 29, 2016 at 09:18 PM

You'd like to say Phaneuf won that fight easily but he didn't. nothing really happened. i call it a draw.

Posted by cheesecup on March 04, 2009 at 12:45 PM

Let cheesecup tell you how it is. There was no elbow. Greg Millan is a moron that took too many pucks to the head. Anyone that calls Phaneuf a punk b1tch is a moron. Heatly's pretty move makes him a moron. And Spezza is a moron for going after Phaneuf because he can't fight. Senators suck!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by slshbleed on March 04, 2009 at 08:13 AM

There is a reflex action with the arm just like when the doctor hits your knee with that little hammer, the elbow has to come up (unless you have some injury or neurological problem. Insert your own neurological problem joke here). Phaneuf's hit was on a guy who was stick handling. Phaneuf used his shoulder then after the hit his elbow natural came up. On the other hand, you don't want your best guys taking lots of hit like that, so Spezza did what he had to do. Was there nobody else on the ice better than Spezza?

Posted by Gunslinger on March 04, 2009 at 07:45 AM

I don't like either of these guys but it was a clean hit even if it was a head shot(with no elbow). It took all year for Spezza to show some life. A draw.

Posted by b.t.wilson on March 03, 2009 at 11:27 PM

Hit was a 9. Phaneuf is a big dude and that my fellow fight fans was all shoulder. Being who he is though, I'd say its going to go about 60/40 with the argument of shoulder/elbow. However, either way you call it, great job by Spezza to get in there the way he did, I don't think either of them really landed a flush shot so I'm calling it a draw and a 3.

Posted by huskie on March 06, 2009 at 08:30 AM

From Spezza, that`s incredible. in french: Ce gars la a monté un peu plus dans mon estime.

Posted by idiotstupid2002 on March 04, 2009 at 07:53 AM

Perfectly clean hit. Stop whining people. Maybe Heatley should think about keeping his head up next time. Kaboom!

Posted by Buckster on March 06, 2009 at 12:21 PM

Boston fan here, no elbow in that hit, pure shoulder on a guy with his head down. If you can't see that you've probably never played the game or have and don't know which end of a stick to hold. Millen was a goalie so his view already mentally tainted

Posted by tattooedkingpin on March 04, 2009 at 10:49 AM

Credit to Spezza for stepping up. Draw

Posted by Stuntman Mike on March 04, 2009 at 01:59 AM

You gotta love Spezza for locking horns with Phaneuf for taking a run at Heatly like that!!! Dion is a punk.

Posted by Dunrobin on March 04, 2009 at 07:54 AM

Definite DRAW. Props to Spezza for sticking up for a teamate. Shoulder to the head is considered "Clean" within the rules, but it is still DIRTY to hit someone in the head.

Posted by trpaulson on March 04, 2009 at 04:01 PM

Spezza wins. He was the only one trying to fight. Anyone who says that wasn't a dirty shot by Phaneuf is probably a Calgarian. I'd love to see one of the bad boys go absolutely postal on old Dion some day.

Posted by Franchise on March 04, 2009 at 09:45 PM

I still wish to god Dion Creampuff would have "made it" to Boogaard last week when Boogie hit Prust. He loves to take shots at guys, but have yet to see the guy shed his lid in a scrap. Pansy @$$.

Posted by Tvm950 on March 04, 2009 at 07:12 PM

A follow-through win an elbow is still considered an elbow. Can't wait for a Brashear-Phaneuf. By the way, Phaneuf is terrible.

Posted by J_Shelley45 on March 04, 2009 at 09:04 PM

Shoulder hit but Dion was headhunting. He aimed for the jaw and that is a punk move. Props to Spezza and jeers to the rest of the Sens, the no-heart club.

Posted by kylethrashers on March 05, 2009 at 11:07 PM

I give props to Spezza, looked like a questionable hit.

Posted by nicknines on March 04, 2009 at 11:16 AM

good job by spezza but i didnt see an elbow

Posted by adivinity on March 07, 2009 at 12:12 PM

good job by Spezza to get phaneuf down before phaneuf could take advantage of his helmet being off

Posted by ChrisNeilKO on March 04, 2009 at 07:54 PM

Jason Spezza took Phaneuf to the cleaners. Talk about a one sided fight....No chance for Calgary's cheap shot artist. Complete domination by Spezza.

Posted by JETTA KNIGHT on March 04, 2009 at 03:58 PM

did they say Spezza's tough?

Posted by woodape on March 04, 2009 at 04:25 PM

No elbow. Phaneuf is not a dirty player. He is a vicious hitter which is a good quality in a defenceman - and not illegal. Ottawa is just trying to find a cause to rally around cause they are an underachieving bunch of primadonnas. Jason Spezza wouldn't scare my grandmother from running at the Sens every night.

Posted by dickpoundbrown on March 04, 2009 at 12:13 PM

Haha props for spezza for stickin up for his boy but he should stick to fighting guys like alex semin

Posted by pepsigenerate on March 04, 2009 at 04:51 AM

someone should have blasted out vandermeer,s teeth in this scuffle, and it,s to bad ottawa doesn,t have a heavyweight in their lineup. what the hell does phx coyotes want with mcgrattan anyway, is he done with his rehab yet for whatever he did, someone put him back in the line-up or is he injured or whats the story.

Posted by sake46 on March 07, 2009 at 08:21 AM

dion phaneuf is a great young player and i liked him a lot when i saw him play his rookie year but he has grown to be a goon he can hit like a train but he picks on the small players he is a dirty player and i believe a coward.

Posted by datafortress on March 04, 2009 at 05:03 AM

Typical homer comments from Sens fans and the idiot commentators. 100% vintage Phaneuf CLEAN hit!!! Dummies Spezza...clear win Dion!

Posted by dwcca on March 04, 2009 at 07:32 AM

i am sick of these idiot homer announcers. "phaneuf looks for guys with there head down" what kinda of comment was that what is the first thing u learn in minor hockey . keep ur head up or end up like on ur ass. the hits phaneuf throw is no where the scott stevens wendel clarke style in late 80's and 90's. since the rule change these new generation players think they do not worry bout being held up so put there head down skate around well thats what happens. i would also like to point out " good for spezza for standing up heatley" these same announcers go on and on and on about how there are always these uncalled for fights after clean hits. i am a leafs fan who has misfortune of living in ottawa for a while now. the sens fans ( what a joke) only support a winning team but boy when they win every overpaid government worker digs in their trunk to find there sens window flag for their car , and memorizes a few players names and throw their two cents in at the water cooler and talk shit about leaf and habs fans ( true hockey fans)

Posted by nuke34 on March 04, 2009 at 09:25 PM

Applaud Spezza for standing up for Heatley, but obvious win to Phaneuf and hes lucky it ended like that, he could have gotten hurt

Posted by cmshort11 on March 05, 2009 at 11:45 PM

Not a real smart move by Spezza, but got to give him props for stepping up for his teammate. He should have let one of the tough guys get a hold of Phaneuf

Posted by ogie ogiltorpe on March 04, 2009 at 12:51 PM

um....Spezza shoulda known better....this speaks to the lack of toughness on the Sens when your star center has to jump in....lucky he didn't get his face rearranged

Posted by 187Jeremy on March 04, 2009 at 10:32 AM

marinemoose38: you are a moron! Phaneuf is one the hardest best hitters in the league. How was that a dirty hit? Heatley had his head down and got rocked. Good for Spezza for showing a pair.

Posted by tyrone on March 04, 2009 at 10:34 AM

Clean hit. Yes, why do guys have to drop the mitts over a clean hit. Oh did i mention that Phaneuf is a [email protected] and a cheap shot artist. Couldn't hit his a$$ with both hands.

Posted by Sam1410 on March 04, 2009 at 12:36 AM

All you guys whining about an elbow have never played hockey. That is exactly how you're taught to hit, tuck your elbow, lead with the shoulder and go through the player from the sternum up - that was all shoulder and his elbow came up after the hit. Idiots - go back to watching figure skating.

Posted by blackgoldfan on March 03, 2009 at 11:06 PM

phaneuf gets the huge clean hit, the elbow never touches...then he beats up spezza in a short fight.

Posted by Ogothorpe3 on March 05, 2009 at 04:05 AM

Elbow please what a homer. The hit made the clip worth while though.

Posted by giantsfrey on March 05, 2009 at 05:27 PM

hahah where is chris neil when ya need him? the hit looked clean to me, but wow, send somebody other than spezza after phaneuf if you wann punish him... they should have just waited for a better line matchup to go after him crappy fight, but win phaneuf; sens looked silly

Posted by gmann14 on March 04, 2009 at 09:25 AM

Give spezza credit for sticking up for a teammate. Not much of a fight though.

Posted by Leafs2006 on March 04, 2009 at 02:22 PM

Full marks to " Spock" Spessa? concussion syndrome still huh Galley??? youre an idiot! Clean Hit...i dont blame Dion for nailing Alfrid E Heatley, he offered to drive Dion back to the hotel after the game,.....sheesh! No sheana donovan anywhere? the new heavyweight champ? Spessa got his ass kicked, as the Seniorita's did too! Nice....woof woof!

Posted by jkluhr on March 04, 2009 at 11:53 AM

Say what you want about Phaneuf but he just took out the whole Senators team (Heatley and Speeza) that leaves what one more player to lead the sens to victory. Clean hit on Heatley and a win on the crap fight against a non-fighter.

Posted by mikebflorida on March 04, 2009 at 09:48 AM

There is one of those "legal" dirty hits. Phaneuf uses the shoulder pad to clean Heatleys clock and the follow through makes it look like an elbow. Dirty hit that should be penalized and never is. Chris Neil does it, lot's of guys do it and get away with it. Phaneuf wins the fight, I guess, he landed some shots on Spezza who is way out of his league. The Sens have become the Red Wings of the East with no toughness at all and it really shows when your best player is instigating fights.

Posted by Sasky001 on March 04, 2009 at 08:41 PM

Heatley got run over and Pizza got beat up. Good on them.

Posted by digitalroc on March 06, 2009 at 12:39 AM

phaneuf gets the W. the only punks here... are the ones that think phaneuf is. the hit was completely a shoulder. start learning to understand the hitting element of the game.

Posted by bruins rule on March 04, 2009 at 02:54 PM

not too much going on in this fight.

Posted by kimocoyote on March 04, 2009 at 09:50 AM

Like they said on NHL Network "when is it going to stop? A good hard though high check and someone takes a run at the guy...Get it clear I donot like Dion Phaneuf, he is a BIG PUNK and "cheap shot master" but this time the hit was good old time hit 'em when they skate with their head down hockey. Again if I didn't make it clear I do not like Phaneuf and oh yeah, neither does Sean Avery.

Posted by Belak_Norris on March 04, 2009 at 12:35 PM

"Let Phaneuf know its not going to happen?" lol, well it did happen and than Phaneuf kicked Spezza's punk ass! I hate Spezza, f#ckin punk! Would have been nice if Phaneuf had landed a few more!

Posted by crosscheck52 on March 04, 2009 at 06:55 AM

Hard hit by Phaneuf: Rang Heatley's bell, and it looked clean to me. Finally some emotion by Spezza, but Phaneuf handled him easily.

Posted by Jerad14 on October 28, 2010 at 11:47 PM

that wasnt even an elbow the commentators are goofs

Posted by dyerardi on March 04, 2009 at 07:01 AM

Why would the announcer say "full marks for Spezza stepping in"? It was a borderline check, but hardly blatant. That's the problem in the NHL these days...the fighting as a result of regualar body contact

Posted by tnaveler on March 04, 2009 at 09:18 AM

Dion slight edge. THERE WAS NO ELBOW, GET YOUR COLLECTIVE HEADS OUT OF YOUR COLLECTIVE A$$!!!! hey dunrobin, should we play like they do in migget league. no hitting at all. go suck and egg. don't ruin my sport, go watch golf.

Posted by Towmater on March 04, 2009 at 01:26 PM

Clean hit and win for Phaneuf

Posted by brashearisanape on March 05, 2009 at 01:12 PM

good to see spezza jump, I mean if your not putting up points may aswell drop 'em.

Posted by Mr. Sin Bin on March 04, 2009 at 01:15 PM

Of coarse Phaneuf won . It was practically over before it began. Gottta give Spezza credit for puttin his head in the lions mouth.

Posted by remdmc on March 05, 2009 at 01:17 AM

clean hit

Posted by bilbobaggins on March 04, 2009 at 04:53 AM

Spezza made an attempt to step up for Heatley after Phaneuf's clean hit. He is just trying to convince people he is worth 8 million a year - ha!

Posted by BigMoses on March 04, 2009 at 10:53 AM

Let's not call that an elbow, this announcer needs to report what he saw and leave his bias behind. Phaneuf looked like he felt bad taking Spezza down, maybe Heatley should keep his head up.

Posted by carolyn1946 on March 04, 2009 at 08:19 AM

Posted by flamesfighter on March 05, 2009 at 10:59 PM

Who says this was a DRAW? Did Spezza land 1 punch? Complete domination by phaneuf.

Posted by cannondale on March 04, 2009 at 03:35 PM

no senator's plaeyr would ever do this, would they??? as in hit a man with his head in what chris neal did to chris drury (then with buffalo) about 2-3 years ago. right! as clean a hit as you'll see. if dion is such a dirty player, would those famous hits all make EVERY hits highlight reel i've ever seen???? you people need to be honest..... heatley and spezza (escpecailly spezza) look as if they're auduitioning for a breck shampoo commerical (remember breck , all you lower 40s people????). my son could put both these guys in the locker room with one hand tied behind hiw back!!!! spezza's effort was similar to hossa's recently,,,,,,both looked as though they were swatting flies from their heads........

Posted by gmr133 on March 04, 2009 at 10:42 AM

Elbow? Dopey homer announcers. Props to Spezza for trying to do something in Ottawa this year. No fight draw.

Posted by Boogeyman2383 on March 04, 2009 at 04:37 PM

Posted by RMKB on March 04, 2009 at 08:00 PM

who the hell is voting for foonuuf? its probably all the flames homers

Posted by preds321 on March 03, 2009 at 11:12 PM

nothing at all going on here. Nice of Spezza to step in but it wasn't necessary. That was a great, clean hit by Phaneuf. All shoulder.

Posted by tomales2 on March 04, 2009 at 11:24 AM

Regardless of the FACT that Phaneuf is a punk, it was all shoulder. Didn't see much of a fight. Draw and a 2

Posted by azjim on March 04, 2009 at 03:06 AM

Sam1410 - Only one guy here said it was an elbow, and he was trying to defend Boogaard (even if he was way off). Isn't there anybody else on the Ottawa team who could go after Phaneuf, if anyone felt it neccesary?

Posted by Wings_19 on March 05, 2009 at 08:31 PM

Typical Phaneuf. Always picking his spots

Posted by bigdog2007 on March 04, 2009 at 06:48 AM

That was funny

Posted by marinermoose38 on March 03, 2009 at 11:27 PM

Phaneuf is a dirty b**ch. Full marks to Spezza for taking Phagoof to task and fighting him to a DRAW.

Posted by Oil Can Henry on March 04, 2009 at 01:45 PM

Nice hit with no elbow ( just a follow-through ).

Posted by sween18 on July 02, 2009 at 10:35 PM

clean hit with the shoulder not much of a fight spezza pretty much got rag dolled there

Posted by claire alexande on March 05, 2009 at 07:57 PM

1. 100% clean hit. All you Phaneuf-haters need to get your head around the FACT that EVERY team in the league would LOVE to have him. 2. Spezza is very lucky he didn't get badly hurt. He's a joke of a fighter and Dion let him off easy because he felt sorry for him for having to play in Ottawa. ChrisNeilKo--what do they put in the water where you live?

Posted by chad420 on March 06, 2009 at 11:15 PM

that was DP...a 4/4

Posted by TrueBlue26 on March 04, 2009 at 01:11 PM

good to see that murderer heatley get rocked...sloppy seconds boy gets the win here

Posted by midknight on March 05, 2009 at 04:23 PM

wow ok, so if they are gonna suspend boogaard for the elbowing they should suspend phaneuf too!! this was a lame fight and a bad decision by Spezza to go after Phaneuf. Win Phaneuf

Posted by bam932 on March 04, 2009 at 09:37 AM

Great hit - not sure what all the whining is about here. You'd think people that like hockey fights would also enjoy hockey hits, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

Posted by DrBt on March 05, 2009 at 01:52 AM

notanelbow, win Phaneuf, props to spezza, elisha cuthbert is hot

Posted by tiburon4 on March 05, 2009 at 01:40 PM

Not much to see, but Phaneuf with the narrow win.
