Great back and forth, Clifford saved himself by skating away from the boards because Thorny was lining him up for the haymaker.

draw draw draw.

Posted by The DZA on January 25, 2011 at 01:14 AM

Thornton looks like he may have connected with a better punch or two, but I'll call this one a draw. Clifford continues to impress me.

Posted by Behn Wilson on January 25, 2011 at 07:00 AM

Now that's a friggin' hockey fight! Draw, out of respect for the effort from both guys. But it nice to see Clifford finally establish a measuring stick with the big boys. And being at, or around Thornton's level on the pugilistic barometer, is, certainly, nothing to be ashamed of.

im surprised to see clifford go with thornton.he fought mostly middleweights or occasional fighters so far.and he did well in this one.i call it draw and rated it a 6

Posted by boldbilly on January 25, 2011 at 09:47 AM

I like Thornton he alway's gives a good account of himself.I thought he should have won this one (on experience alone) but he didn't. This fight was a draw. I'm not saying he's washed up.... no far from it. But what I see is an aging fighter who ......if you look at his last couple of fights has not done well. Sorry Boston fans again in such a close fight you stuff the ballot boxes , I think what happens on this site is Boston fans vote Boston the rest vote objectively. That's why almost none for Clifford for the win with the rest of the voters seeing it as a draw. Oh well great fight anyway.

As a result of the gameplay, the two come together along the boards by the penalty boxes in a short battle for the puck. Thornton gives an extra push (and probably issues a verbal challenge), Clifford drops the gloves, then Thornton and they have a short square-off. NESN is late getting the camera there, and doesn't show the beginning of the fight in replay either. From what we see, Clifford lands two rights, misses one, then lands a body shot, Thornton throws a right that doesn't seem to connect. Thornton lands a right on the helmet, and later a short right jab to the face. Clifford puts an uppercut into Thornton's chest area, then lands a right to the face. Thornton lands a hard right on the side of the helmet. Thornton tries an uppercut that doesn't reach, Clifford lands a right on the side of Thornton's head. Thornton pushes Clifford against the boards, changes his left hand's grip a bit, and puts a right into his face. Clifford is able to circle out away from the boards and throws an awkward-looking right that doesn't connect, Thornton lands a right, then another as Clifford misses a right. Clifford lands an uppercut to the body and hits Thornton in the head with his forearm as a result of missing a right. Clifford misses two more rights. Thornton lands 3 jersey jabs and a right. Clifford attempts a right but Thornton has him gripped well enough that it doesn't reach. Clifford then hugs Thornton, beginning with his right arm after the last punch and following with his left. They hold on lightly and drift into the boards before the linesman break it up. Clifford 7/14, Thornton 9/11. Watch Thornton switch his grip when Clifford is against the boards and Edwards says "big right... Thornton hammers him." Prior to this, Clifford was winning the fight, but Thornton is able to grip in a better spot that allows him to keep his left arm extended and prevent Clifford from landing much. Clifford doesn't keep Thornton away at all. Because of this situation, Thornton is able to make Clifford miss and has no problem coming back with counter-punches. I feel like we may have missed some good punches due to the camera work. I think Clifford may have landed something good, Thornton's helmet was clearly knocked off before the camera switches there. I'd like to see the whole fight, but from what we've got, it's a draw. Thornton turned the fight around and finished in a better situation, but as far as what landed throughout the fight, the amount of good shots landed is even from what is seen in the video.

I love this kid Clifford. Funny how people on here say, oh wait until he take's on a real fighter. Go look at his fight card. Sutherby, Voros, Jackman, Staubtiz, Parros, Dorsett, Thornton, Bissonnette, Brookbank. All tough guy's and he did very well against everyone of them. This kid will be a monster in a few yrs.

Posted by m4rine77 on January 25, 2011 at 08:22 PM

shawn thornton always seems to be involved in pretty good scraps. gotta love that guy. fight was a CLEAR draw and a 7

Posted by fernben8 on January 25, 2011 at 11:57 AM

Clifford does very well against one of my favorite fighters... I hope he's got a good head on his shoulders to make a long career out of it. It's scary to think how dominant he'll be in a few years when he's stronger , 20 lbs. heavier and even more 'experienced '. As for Thornton, he's got to be the most well rounded fighter this season. Very exciting to watch. Going Draw.

Posted by sedinfan on January 25, 2011 at 01:21 AM

Great fight as usual when Thornton is involved. Win or lose, he might be one of the most entertaining.

Posted by Vblue13 on January 25, 2011 at 02:40 AM

Good fight overall. Evenly matched. No one let down so Its a DRAW. Loving the guts of this Clifford kid.

Posted by LA KING FANATIC on January 25, 2011 at 11:30 AM

Good exchange of blows, Thornton threw a bunch and landed a few, same with Kyle. A good solid bout, this kid is doing things the right way. He is learning by doing! A solid draw and a great fight, quality tilts are so fun to watch!

Posted by billy jack on January 25, 2011 at 06:22 PM

Clifford has that want that all fighters need, how can you not like either of these guys.Mind you we will see were clifford is at when he reaches thortons age and your knuckles are bent every way and your worried the caps on your teeth will be removed, and your head pounds from no sinuses.but great tilt.

Posted by qmchugh on January 25, 2011 at 07:31 AM

two tough guys just trading. called it a draw

Posted by b.t.wilson on January 25, 2011 at 01:24 AM

while not the 'best' fighters, as in top of the heavy list, these two have to be in the top five entertaining fighters this year. in terms of all around hockey play, thornton is a dream for the bruins with his multitude of talents, his consistently excellent fights most notably. the big dog steps up and takes on an established tough son of a bitch in thornton and more than holds his own. calling it a draw, though a win for thornton is quite tolerable, and an entertaining 8. ryan gosling step aside, there's a new man in my life.

Posted by RPULTZ on January 25, 2011 at 08:28 PM

Kyle Clifford's a great candidate for Rookie fighter of the year

Posted by Dammit-Man on January 25, 2011 at 11:40 AM

Great Knuckle Chucker! Both guys got some Good Shots. Impressive Draw

Posted by rocky 1 on January 25, 2011 at 09:34 PM

Good bout with both trading.Give this a stand up draw! Come on Boston fans at the end of the fight it was Thornton wanting to end the fight by holding on!

Posted by icebreaker2 on January 25, 2011 at 06:15 PM

Great bout, called it a draw but could have been a slight edge to Sugar Shawn!

Posted by bruiser11 on January 25, 2011 at 02:23 AM

Very good.

Posted by BRAAAAAP194 on January 26, 2011 at 08:25 PM

Posted by NumbCracker on January 26, 2011 at 10:05 PM

great fight

Posted by Lucky33 on January 25, 2011 at 01:01 PM

Great tilt. Gotta love a brawl with no defense whatsoever! Just swing away! I think Clifford really thrives on these kinds of fights. He sure doesn't mind taking a few punches in order to hand out a few. He's got guts. At 20 years old, he is showing he has what it takes to be a tough guy that can play the game. He's got heart and gives it all every shift. Without a doubt the new fan-favorite in LA. Thornton is very much the same style of player. Two very likable guys going at it. Gotta give it a draw, though Thornton may have landed the better of the punches. Both seemed to land the same amount.

Posted by bluesrule on January 26, 2011 at 04:53 PM

solid darw but in my eyes clifford but to close to give the advantage to eney one good fight.

Posted by ChrisC on January 25, 2011 at 09:01 AM

Pretty Even fight. Thorton had the size and experience, Clifford has a lot of heart for someone his age. Way to close to pick a decisive winner, so I'm calling it a draw.

Posted by kinga101 on January 25, 2011 at 02:43 PM

Entertaining fight. Thornton as usual never disappoints and Clifford continues to impress for a youngster with his aggressive style. The camera was a little late getting to the action, not sure if it was a big right that knocked Thornton's lid off - maybe someone who was there can comment on that, but in any event going with a solid draw.

Posted by skater1 on January 25, 2011 at 06:04 AM

The LA Kid's first big test and he held his own. Draw.

Posted by BULL66DOG on January 25, 2011 at 09:39 AM

good high energy bout. cliffy showing skills beyond his age. watch out this kid is going to be a force. rate it a draw

Posted by johnnyrock555 on January 25, 2011 at 07:07 PM

Cliford was strong early but Thornton came back and took over. Excellent fight, they should all be that good. Still a draw but one of the better fights of the year.

Posted by brymaster1 on January 25, 2011 at 03:05 AM

Posted by BigBadBruins77 on February 11, 2011 at 04:55 PM

thornton isnt the biggest and doesnt have the longest reach but he's always willing to drop the gloves. both very tough customers in this great bout

TOo many Bruins haters here def edge to shawn here

Posted by Canadiens100 on January 25, 2011 at 08:21 AM

The winner is Thornton. He's a good guy to have on any team. He's not a dirty player and he knows his role.

Posted by stevemcgraw1 on January 25, 2011 at 06:22 PM

This fight looked really close. After watching it a few times I noticed Clifford threw a lot of punches and tied up Thornton well.. The drawback with Clifford was that he wasnt connecting with his punches. I originally thought this was a draw but after watching again I say Thornton with the win.

Posted by gkcs7 on January 25, 2011 at 12:39 PM

edge to thornton,on points...the kid clifford definately manned up.

Posted by slshbleed on January 25, 2011 at 01:19 AM

Thornton but not by much. Clifford has been pretty good so far this year.

Posted by yohan on January 25, 2011 at 12:17 PM

Id say win by thorton. Looked stronger and landed better. These guys are actually pretty damn close to the same size as you can tell from the video. Thornton's stats are inflated, he is more like 6 foot. Good showing from Clifford but i dont think you can yet put him "in the range" of Thornton's yet, as someone else stated. Thornton consistantly fights the top heavys and fairs rather well in most. I still think Clifford would get mopped up by most the top ten HW's 95% of the time. For some reason Thornton seems to have more trouble with guys his size than the bigger guys- case in point Carcillo and Cooke(thornton won but it wasnt the beat down one expected). I woulda rather seen Lucic fight CLifford. I think Lucic would be a tougher fight for Clifford as he's much bigger, and has a better, heavier right than thornton.

Posted by moneybags on January 25, 2011 at 01:54 AM

thornton knows how to throw em ...another win..the kid looked pretty good tho

Posted by hal29 on January 25, 2011 at 12:50 PM

Edge to Thornton for landing the better of the punches. Thornton would of kept going but it seemed Clifford had enough or wad gassed. I would put Thornton at the top as a heavy his only down fall is taken on guys lower then hum as he tries to be over dominant. His best fights ate against bigger tougher guys. I give Clifford credit though. Next time he should get a better hold and grab the right arm but technique will come with experience.

Posted by bruins rule on January 25, 2011 at 07:46 AM

thornton gets the slight edge in this very good fight.

Posted by smashem on January 25, 2011 at 07:59 AM

Pretty good fight if you are going with show i could see why people would pick Clifford he was all over the place swinging wildly and did not connect, if this kid is not a possible Carcillo i am not sure who is. On the other hand Thorts connects with 3 good punches and one snapping cliffy's head back. Edge Thornton, Props to the 19 Yr old though for sure.

Posted by jamesagood0822 on January 27, 2011 at 08:30 PM

I Love it when shawn fights, he should be the Bruins captain!

Posted by hayes482 on January 26, 2011 at 06:33 AM

thornton with the win.

Posted by mmadced on January 27, 2011 at 01:11 AM

thornton with the win in a close one. the kids good but will have his work cut out for him in the heavies how to fight17 you are clueless the object is to hit and not be hit duhh.............

Posted by AZfromNJ on January 25, 2011 at 12:59 AM

Razor thin decision for Thornton who lands the cleaner and more effective punches in a fight that had more swing/misses than a Dback baseball game!

Posted by GreatMurray on January 25, 2011 at 09:52 AM

Good go eh! Both guys we really good. Thought Thornton might have landed the better punches but I can't quarrel with a draw call either. They both will want to try this again. Best fight of the night!

Posted by joeye4 on January 25, 2011 at 06:44 PM

Great fight with Thornton with the win.

Posted by tyrone on January 26, 2011 at 12:55 PM

What idiots called this a draw? Clifford did well, but clearly got beat. Thornton W

Posted by Hankdiggidy on January 25, 2011 at 01:05 PM

Great, intense brawl.....both guys got some good shots in but Thornton controlled for most of the fight.

Posted by Ecce72 on January 25, 2011 at 04:52 AM

Thornton, but not by much. Very good fight

Posted by Cusefn on January 25, 2011 at 06:56 AM

Good scrap. Thornton with the experience edge. Smart move by Clifford to get off the boards, may have gotten ugly.Tough kid though.

Posted by joeman on January 30, 2011 at 07:39 PM

That was a bout folks. Though not sure how anyone saw this as a Clifford win. Nice job by both guys.

Posted by Matt13 on January 25, 2011 at 12:01 PM

Shawn Thornton has a 191 fights in his pro career, while Clifford has 14. Shawn first entered the league when Clifford was 9, 10 years ago. Clifford is fighting fighters with alot more experience them him and holding his own very well. With some more experience and growth, imagine him when he is 25. Edge to Thornton, even with my Clifford man crush.

Posted by SCOTTSO on January 25, 2011 at 01:09 AM

love thornton, great scrap sean with the edge

Thorton couldn't compare to Clifford

Posted by garryking on January 25, 2011 at 04:46 AM

Dont understand why people say Thornton won. Obvious draw.

Posted by howtofight17 on January 26, 2011 at 11:09 AM

Thornton did not want to open up, scared to get hit, Clifford still wanting to fight like it was the 80's. Thornton should check himself and ask if he really wants to be a fighter in the NHL.

Posted by mcpunchingbag on January 25, 2011 at 01:02 PM

you guys are crazy giving thornton the win. Clifford in 19 friggin years old. you guys suck. pull yer heads out of yer asses. DRAW! win for thornton...are you kidding me? what fight were your watching?

Posted by BigBadBruins68 on June 30, 2011 at 02:03 PM

Old School meets New School in this tilt and the results are fantastic. Thornton is always willing to let the knuckles fly and Clifford looks like he could be very exciting for years to come.
