This was not really a fight, as Cooke did not get the penalty (though he probably should have). The reason for the call stems from the hit on Letang in the 1st when Godard went out to try to stir something up, to no avail, and got an unsportsmanlike call for his trouble. While this instance resulted in a crap call (Peckham should probably have been given two five-minutes and Cooke should have had one), the league doesn't want every good hit to be followed up by some blindsided attack on the player. Godard demonstrated what should happen when there is a legal, albeit questionable hit. To quote BGL, "I never fought anyone who didn't want to." I would definitely agree that the "irritators" like Avery, Ruutu, Cooke, etc... need to be accountable for these hits, but Peckham was all over him and throwing punches before Cooke got his gloves off. What's next, are we going to rate the Bertuzzi punch to the back of the head?

Tough to call this one. Do you vote for the filth that is Matt Cooke or the filth that is the Oilers? Why did the refs step in so early? I love that the Oilers got a 7 minute PK out of this - probably cost them the game.

Posted by bubbaburgh on November 07, 2008 at 01:50 AM

Total bullshit "fight" by Peckham! Clean hit by Cooke (averaging about 1 fight (10) per season (8). Thus Cooke isn't a fighter and was attacked cowardly by Peckham, but gotta give another AHL'er some points though for "fighting" his way into the NHL. Didn't turn out so well for MacIntyre. See both of you back in Springfield next week. sad W for Peckerham = sissy

Garbage call by the refs. Even as Pens fan, I have to say we got lucky -- should have been 5 mins. Cooke got the gloves off, but didn't square up. Can't figure the refs angle in this. Maybe they got confused and thought they were at a really cold soccer match. Let the boys fight! Gave it a 1 and W for Peckham; only because there was no 0.

Cooke should have had a fighting major. I agree with the extra time for Peckham, although I thought Cooke should have been penalized for his jersey not being tied-down. A cheesy call I know but one that was made on Cole earlier in the season and really hurt the Oilers. I watched this game on a Pittsburgh feed and was disgusted with the announcing/ call of the game.

Posted by lowsco77 on November 07, 2008 at 04:34 PM

Clean hit...yes. Depending on where you fall on fighting in the game, the response was justified. I agree with Peckham's response given who was hit and who did the hitting. If its Crosby on Gagner, Peckham isn't going to grab Crosby. Its Cooke though...and we all know what he likes to do. Peckham did the right thing. Cooke did the right thing by holding on and taking his lumps right up until the refs get in there and Peckham stops throwing and SURPRISE SURPRISE Gutless Cooke suckers him when Peckham stops and the refs tie them up. That is why it is perfectly acceptable to pummel Matt Cooke whenever he takes a run at someone (more often than not a skill player who he knows won't fight him). Bettman - please take out the instigator penalty so we can rid the league of agitators who take runs at good players and then cower when its time to answer for it.

Good job by the rookie to step up a la Mike Keane.

Posted by Chaotic8 on November 08, 2008 at 02:24 AM

How the hell is Cooke not going to be assessed a fighting major?!?!? He dropped gloves didn't he? He threw one punch at the end didn't he? Frickin zebras are special ed students sometimes.

Posted by NotoriousT on November 07, 2008 at 01:36 AM

Cooke Throws A Shot At The End And He Has His Golves Off And Yet He Only Gets 2 Minutes. . .Good Call Refs

Posted by jbaker3924 on November 07, 2008 at 09:52 AM

Win Peckham.

Posted by Boogeyman2383 on November 06, 2008 at 10:56 PM

Both players threw punches at the end. Wow

Posted by Ragtop1day on November 07, 2008 at 09:02 PM

clearly Peckham...

Posted by Morder on November 07, 2008 at 07:54 PM

If some of you would of watch the play before the Gagner hit you would of seen the cheap hit by Cooke on I think Tom Gilbert. He left his feet and elbowed Gilbert. So after Cooke running after Gagner 10 seconds after his cheap hit and the refs not calling anything it was the right thing to do for the first game rookie to do. Cooke is a coward and should of at least got 4 minutes.

matt cooke is a such a D-bag.......its pathetic when guys like him and avery are so crazy when the refs have it split up....

Posted by nstars27 on November 07, 2008 at 03:16 AM

cooke=pussy borderline hit and i'm glad peck STOOD UP for his teammate.

Posted by KDOGG on November 09, 2008 at 04:31 PM

Glad to see Matt Cooke gone from Vancouver gutless puke!

Posted by newmy024 on November 07, 2008 at 02:59 PM

Finally someone teaches matt cooke a lesson and heshould be beaten up more often, such a cheap skate.

Posted by mike563 on November 27, 2008 at 08:37 PM

thought we had a turtle in cooke for a sec peckham wins

Posted by Sukoshi84 on November 07, 2008 at 11:06 AM

Lol Theo landed a solid left while the Refs came in but you cant fault him for that cause that bitch Cooke was doing the same. Plus everyone loves to see matt cooke get hit bubbaburgh your a fuking moron, apparently you dont know sh!t about hockey cause if you would know that Cooke is one of the biggest pus$ies on the ice.

Posted by woosh on November 07, 2008 at 02:34 AM

unbeivable call by reffs by not giving Cooke a fighting major, as poorly as the Oiler's were playing, see no need for such lopsided calls, as year continues I'm vey sure Cooke will recieve many more spankings because of his cheap shots

Posted by b.t.wilson on November 07, 2008 at 09:04 AM

Three cheers for the rookie! I agree with some of the reviews though, a good clean hit apparently isn't allowed anymore. I always loved the honour factor when someone really got laid out something fierce, but the fact that you can't give a beautiful open ice hit anymore without having to drop the gloves is a little silly.

Posted by hughcares on November 07, 2008 at 09:29 AM

Why do morons complain when a non-fighter gets in fight or there is a fight after a clean hit - who cares - a fight is a fight. Cooke is a pu**y and desired what he got.

Posted by Wild_KO King on November 06, 2008 at 11:27 PM

I thoroughly enjoyed that. I still harbor ill feelings against Cooke after his garbage when he played with the Nucks, and love nothing more than watching the back of his skull get pounded in. (maybe I exagerated a bit, but it was still good) WIN Peckerham (sounds dirty...)

Posted by ahartnack on February 17, 2009 at 07:59 AM

Peckham, 5 minutes for giving. Cooke, 5 minutes for receiving.

Posted by micah555 on November 07, 2008 at 03:21 AM

I'm so glad Cooke isn't a Canuck anymore. What a b***h. He did throw a punch once the refs came in, so he should have gotten at least 2 for roughing and 2 for unsportsmanlike conduct. What a jackass.

Posted by dcmac on November 07, 2008 at 05:16 PM

No question who won.

Posted by BigPapa08 on November 06, 2008 at 10:09 PM

Crap call by the refs here, Cooke had his gloves off, he just couldn't get any punches off. Upon second review Cooke landed a punch when the linseman got in, no way he shouldn't get 5 as well.

Posted by tattooedkingpin on November 06, 2008 at 11:30 PM

How did Cooke not get a major?? anyway, W to Peckham

Posted by rdawg on November 06, 2008 at 10:21 PM

theo got like 7 good punches in

Posted by Oilers74 on November 07, 2008 at 10:21 PM

Cooke is a little girl who hides behind his visor and never fights. This players is the reason why the instigator should be removed from the NHL.

Posted by cats4hockey on November 07, 2008 at 08:01 AM

Clearly Cooke did manage to get his gloves off, too bad he couldn't get a shot off. Should have been a fighting major as well. If you recall, that was Cooke's 2nd hit in less than a minute! He was out there throwing his weight around, hitting guys smaller than him!! Peckham stood up for his team members...which MacIntyre couldn't do...he only saw 30seconds in the whole game after his lousy fight! Peckham is going to make a great addition to the Oilers....just as soon as they wake up and decide to keep him in the majors. Cooke deserved every shot he took!!

Posted by blackgoldfan on November 06, 2008 at 10:35 PM

Cooke out head hunting (clean hits at least) and peckham used the back of his head for target practice. This peckham guy could make for a nasty blue liner in the future. Definatly a "W".

Posted by megatron34 on November 06, 2008 at 11:45 PM

Cooke gets whooped.

Posted by BruinsAandR on November 25, 2018 at 10:24 AM

any fight is good if cooke gets his ass beat

Posted by Hoju on November 07, 2008 at 01:51 PM

how about players respond to big hits with a big hit of their own as a change of pace, these muggings after clean hits are brutal.

Posted by J.R. Abel on November 10, 2008 at 11:39 AM

This was not a fight.

Posted by thepolishkid88 on November 06, 2008 at 11:23 PM

Just so dumb. I don't get it. Players throw clean hits and then for some reason somebody takes offense to it and you get this. It's garbage. I like fighting but my god it just seems they are missing the point of just remember that guys number and go after him. Cooke should have gotten 5 minutes to.

Posted by sjovocop55 on November 07, 2008 at 06:34 PM

I will give this one to Peckham only becuase COOKE never threw a punch! but the punches to the back fo the helmet does not get you a win in the NHL

Posted by Wildfan01 on November 12, 2008 at 01:49 PM

god I hate cooke, what a PU$$Y.

Posted by gmr133 on November 07, 2008 at 01:28 PM

Clean hits by Cooke. Peckham is an idiot--another dope ruining the game by slowing it down after good hard checks with useless fights. Find a fighter, defend a cheap shot, whatever. Forget this crap. Cooke should've got 5 min too.

Posted by chump on November 07, 2008 at 01:22 AM

how cooke gets off with just a roughing is beyond me. although, i wouldnt even call his hugging and clinging even roughing, more of a 'loving'. peckham with the clear win.

Posted by barnibizer on November 07, 2008 at 11:36 AM

Rubbish fight. both shud have had majors. Clean hit. Peckham doesnt know how to fight...flaying away at Cooke helmet

Posted by DevsFan30 on November 07, 2008 at 03:15 PM

Awful call by the refs. Just because you get your butt whooped doesn't mean you don't get a fighting major. He dropped the gloves, just got dominated by Peckham.

Posted by jano on November 07, 2008 at 03:02 AM

bubbaburgh, you don't know much about Matt Cooke, do you? The word "cowardly" is typically used to refer to him, not who happens to be attacking him at any given time!....

Posted by giefs on November 11, 2008 at 01:22 PM

I hate cooke and it felt good to watch him lose.

Posted by hockeyherman on February 08, 2009 at 07:08 PM

How the hell did Cooke not get a fighting major for that?

Posted by Richterfan on November 08, 2008 at 07:44 PM

Win Peckham and a hero in my book for hammering the biggest pansy in the league.

Posted by DAHTcom on November 06, 2008 at 10:09 PM

Cooke got a lesson from the kid in this one. Peckham had it won before the refs stepped in, however Cooke got rocked on a late hit that was lauched from Peckhams left hand while two refs trying to seperate! That was like having a scope of ice cream on the warm apple pie... the apple pie is good enough by itself, but became memorable after the scope was tossed on. Peckham wins easily in an early stoppage by refs who probably thought fighting wasn't allowed in the NHL
