Here's the first big heavyweight clash this year in a pre season game between Phoenix and Los Angeles.. Fritz is trying to impress the Phoenix org so they take him on as their heavyweight this season, while Westgarth is almost guaranteed to be in the LA team next season..
Fritz has been one of the best minor league fighters for years and when he got the call up to the NHL last season he done real good taking on all the top guys in the league.. He even edged out George Laraque in a scrap..
Westgarth is in only his 4th season yet he has already dropped them with nearly all the other top guys about in the AHL.. He's had 2 solid season's In the AHL and hopefully he gets a full season in the NHL this year.. He's a cert to be one of the better guys in the league if he does get a shot.
The fight starts with both guys dropping the gloves after a face off and they quickly come together locking onto each other with their left hands. Westgarth then throws a few quick jersey jabs before both threw and landed with a couple of straight rights each.
Westgarth then throws another three rights at Fritz but these look to fall short of the target. Fritz then lands a right hand on Westgarth and misses with a second punch that he threw. Westgarth then throws another right at Fritz but Fritz now has Westgarth at arms length and uses his reach advantage to keep Westgarth at bay.
They grapple about for a second and Westgarth attempts a few more rights but again these look to fall short and Fritz lands a good counter right that gets a reaction from the crowd. Westgarth then lands a few left handed jersey jabs and Fritz misses with a big straight right and Westgarth lands a counter right hand on Fritz. Fritz then misses with another right hand and they both come in tight and tie up. The lino's then see the fight is over and they come in and separate the pair of them.
Westgarth threw and maybe landed a couple more than Fritz, but Fritz landed the two best punches of the fight and always seemed in control while Westgarth was swinging wildly. I'm calling it a draw with maybe a slight edge to Fritz if I was forced to give it either way. Good early pre season battle between these two guys and just what they need to impress the coaches.
Fritz and Lessard, two more animals for Gretzky's Goon Squad... How fitting is it that Gretzky, who ran like a coward throughout his career and has made numorous attempts to squash fighting, has two of the sickest maniacs in the league... Lady Bing has a tear running down her cheek....
