2006-2007 Regular Season

Date / Time Away / Home Team Away / Home Player
Oct 14, 2006 Ottawa Senators Chris Neil
1pd 20:00 Montreal Canadiens Aaron Downey
A late hit after the whistle causes a giant scrum in the corner. Neil and Steve Begin drop the gloves and come out of the crowd throwing punches at each other. Downey skates over and grabs Neil. A linesmen comes over and grabs Begin off of Neil, then skates over to Downey and tries to separate him from Neil. Neil throws a left and one of the referees skate over to try and pry them apart as well. Neil screams at him and after a moment they decide to let the two go. They skate further down ice and begin a battle that sees both fighters landing numerous shots, both lefts, rights, and uppercuts. They separate at one point only to continue throwing punches boxing-style before the referees finally step in and end the fight. Other Penalties: Downey received a charging and misconduct; Andrej Meszaros a roughing and misconduct.

Somewhat of a hug-fest for a while, Neil definitely got some good lefts off but Downey didn't do too poorly either. I call it a draw.

Pretty even fight, didnt notice any major bombs but I will concede that Neil took a little more punishment. However, it was really far more closer than what the votes are

They landed about same amount of punches.
Downey gets the best punch of the fight.
It was even at the start to the end.
A draw.

Draw. Not a bad scrap. Nice to see Neil fight and not turtle or cheap shot.

Whew, that was a fun one! The win goes to Downey for the better shots.

I love these 6' 210 guys. They seem to have great strength, balance and ferocity. It's hard to believe but Downey and Neil were about the size of guys like Churla/Nilan/Byers etc. back in the day.

Give me a Rypien/Asham fight any day over a Boogaard/Parros borefest.

It would have been fun to watch Downey and Thornton in one of their old battles in the AHL.

how many shots did neil take in the face while he was tied up in the corner? He already had half a fight by the time this one got started...
Posted by Ryanco on Apr 5, 2007 at 2:51 PM agree disagree
Neil had to put up with the other 3-4 people beating him while going after downy neil was getting tired before it even started
