Not a fan of throwing them while a guy's on his back, but IK isn't much of a fighter, so he gets a pass on that one. McCabe apparently went to the "George Parros ice dancing school", either that or the trainer slipped rollerblades onto his feet.

Posted by billy jack on April 11, 2009 at 03:38 AM

that wasnt a fight, tossing some one around is play ground crap.

Posted by goodtimes82 on April 12, 2009 at 08:11 AM

I dont even know what to say about this so called "fight"

Posted by plubber on April 11, 2009 at 12:40 AM

flopping around like salmon in the boat no harm, no winner

Posted by MCGILL25 on April 10, 2009 at 05:28 PM

call it a draw , kovalchuk A for effort though !

Posted by no123one on April 13, 2009 at 07:48 AM

Haha, that was funny. Kovalchuk didn't seem to know how to throw a punch. In fact, Kovalchuk didn't even throw a single punch if you look closely. He just threw a few open handed slaps on Mccabes Jersey. Mcabe was the only one to land punches, one in the middle, then he hit Kovalchuk square in the face with 2 punches when lying on the ice. As somebody said, Mccabe was still hurt (broken face) from a slapshot, otherwise Kovalchuk would have been toast. No real winner, but edge to McCabe

Posted by detfan on April 10, 2009 at 11:50 AM

I have a better idea. How about McCabe undoubtedly won this one because the Thrashers suck and need to move to Winnipeg already. Worst hockey franchise ever. Screw their fans, all 5-10 of them. Hey Bettman, a team like the Thrashers would stand a better market in the middle of New Mexico than a sh*thole like Atlanta.

Posted by Rangers27 on April 10, 2009 at 09:41 PM

not a good fight

Posted by Clark75 on April 10, 2009 at 12:09 PM

McCabe sucks! How do you lose against a finesse player when all you used to do when you joined the NHL is fight? You should be ashamed of yourself buddy. Glad your not in TO anymore.

Posted by Rantavahti on April 10, 2009 at 07:27 AM

That must have been humiliating for McCabe...I feel bad for him

Posted by wildfan4eva on April 10, 2009 at 10:44 AM

Funny how nobody mentions the cheap shots by Kov while Mccabe is down, oh...is it ok since its kov? Bullshit, if it were anyone that is considered a real fighter their would be much more bitchn....very hypocritical....win goes to kov anyway...I just hate it when some people seem to give the ok to certain players cuz of who they are..it shouldn't even matter..rules and codes are rules and codes!!

Posted by mikebflorida on April 10, 2009 at 09:26 AM

McCabe ought to be ashamed of himself. Huge props to Kovie. Ditched the lid and everything. LOL

Posted by BruinLeader on April 11, 2009 at 09:18 PM

In what bizzaro world did this fight take place?

Posted by gnomodom on April 10, 2009 at 11:26 AM

Not sure what McCabe was thinking considering he's still nursing a broken face from an errant slap shot. That probably had a good deal to do with this.

Posted by bruiseyoureye on April 10, 2009 at 10:19 AM

mccabe should be embarrased getting beat up like that from a wimpy russian player.............id bet when mccabe went to sleep last night he was in an emotional "world of hurt"............from getting humiliated by that little wimp kovalchuk......the little respect i had left for mccabe is now straight out the window...now there is zero respect......mccabe.....retire and retire NOW!

Posted by brashearisanape on April 10, 2009 at 08:31 PM

MCCABE GETS RAG DOLLED BY CHARA AND NOW BEAT BY A DAMN RUSSIAN PUSSY

Posted by cam25 on April 11, 2009 at 10:17 AM

This is why you have to "show up" to a fight. Now you have to live with the embarrassment of losing to Ilya Kovalchuk.

Posted by blazers76 on April 10, 2009 at 08:35 AM

McCabe = pussy

Posted by shrk33 on April 11, 2009 at 02:02 PM

I guess I shold move Kovalchuk up in the rankings of fighting ability...

Posted by Thunderbolt on April 13, 2009 at 08:23 AM

After that showing anybody who does not like a hit by Bryan McCabe and does not respond is foolish. It certianly looks like he cannot back up his physical play when challenged.

Posted by SirYohans on April 10, 2009 at 12:22 PM

Kovalchuk was throwing while on the ice, while on his butt, while on his head etc. Can't really blame 'em, he doesn't really know too much about this fighting thing. Props to both for ditching the helmets and going at it proper. Oh yeah, win for Kovi.

Posted by kingpintoo on April 11, 2009 at 06:56 PM

McCabe is a panzie. Whatever.

Posted by Rabid Wombat on April 10, 2009 at 05:22 PM

3 words i never thought i would use on this site: Clear win Kovalchuk good for him, showing a little fire and emotion Kudos for both for taking off the visors

Posted by Awesome-0 on April 10, 2009 at 10:29 AM

How bizarre.....

Posted by Jordybats99 on March 12, 2016 at 09:46 PM

Win Kovalchuk.

Posted by Behn Wilson on April 10, 2009 at 11:32 PM

McCabe seemed to be as shocked at Kovalchuks' eagerness to fight, as I was at the watching the Russin give him the wet noodle shake 3 times. Funny win, and Rocky move, Kovalchuk. To paraphrase ''buffalo squad''...''One of the best players I'll never see''.

Posted by forsberg21 on April 10, 2009 at 03:09 PM

Can't say i was expecting that...

Posted by Formerref on April 11, 2009 at 12:44 PM

LMFAO McCabe gets slapped around by a goal scorer!!

Posted by lb1631 on April 10, 2009 at 08:32 AM

Bryan McCabe what the hell was that. You throw your helmet down like a tough guy and then get thrown around like a ragdoll. That was horrible. Kovalchuk with the win.

Posted by simon1212 on April 10, 2009 at 03:00 AM

Excellent fight!! Kovi has led as the present Captain!!!!!!!

Posted by The llama on April 11, 2009 at 12:49 AM

Ha...Ha.... McCabe got rag-dolled by a Russian...

Posted by Art24 on April 11, 2009 at 05:08 AM

I usually hate it when enforcers ham it up after a fight like that moron Domi used to do. I love the part of the code, which Probert and Godard exemplify, where they skate off emotionless from a fight. But Kovalchuk is no enforcer and probably only did what he did to get swing momentum in his teams favour. So his performance was pretty cool. But he shouldn't try this stuff too often.

Posted by b.t.wilson on April 10, 2009 at 08:30 AM

That was priceless, I loved Kovalchuk's hamming it up at the end. I also loved Ovechkin's 50th goal party, so... I guess I'm one of those people that doesn't mind a bit of russian flair in the NHL. McCabe... well I don' know what the hell that was, he was acting like Kovy had a gun and he kept tuck and rolling out of the way of the bullets. I don't know how else to explain it. If they both stayed on their skates it could have been great, but I called it a 5 as well (I don't know about the rest, but the energy and the celebration after to me bumped it up a couple notches). Win Kovalchuk.

Posted by swirvin on April 10, 2009 at 11:29 AM

i always give a little slack to late punches by non-fighters. its not that they know what they are doing out there, lol. easy win kovalchuk

Posted by tattooedkingpin on April 10, 2009 at 05:04 PM

Who would have thought. W to Kolvalchuk

Posted by Humper on April 10, 2009 at 10:27 AM

Whatsa matter McCabe, did you think you were fighting Chara again??

Posted by staceyb on April 10, 2009 at 05:55 AM

Kovalchuk has been quietly assembling an MVP-like season but unfortunately he skates for the Thrashers.

Posted by Belak_Norris on April 10, 2009 at 01:06 PM

Im glad Mccabe is not with the Leafs anymore!!! Kovalchuk and throw, in all of his fights he has done suprisingly well. Easy win for Kovalchuk!

Posted by Tomasson on April 10, 2009 at 04:04 AM

clear win for Kovalchuk

Posted by crosscheck52 on April 10, 2009 at 07:00 AM

Kovalcuhuk surprisingly threw McCabe around and landed more punches as well.

Posted by carolyn1946 on April 11, 2009 at 11:21 AM

kovalchuk the winner. I donot remember Kovalchuk fighting but do not make him mad. GREAT JOB

Posted by Mikeyitalia19 on April 11, 2009 at 07:56 AM

did mccabe try to kick him?

Posted by Fight_Fanatic on December 20, 2009 at 02:16 AM

Kovalchuk is an undeniable brawler, and he has no mercy. By definition, I'm pretty sure that makes him a good fighter for the NHL. I was at this game, close enough to the ice to hear some of the punches connect, and I'll say I was practically seizuring with excitement to see Kovy get in a fight. And now I see why he gets in so few of them: it's beyond a fight for fight's sake, he's genuinely pissed every time he throws a punch. It's not like George Parros' fights, or especially not like the "fights" provoked by the Rangers' Avery with a cheap shot from behind; it's a beating to make a point, and make his opponent-no, his victim, feel some serious pain. Can he be considered a veteran fighter thought he's only been in a handful of fights? I think so.

Posted by dunkin on April 10, 2009 at 01:12 PM

its good to see mcabe get humbled

Posted by Ryan44 on April 10, 2009 at 04:42 AM

That was surprisingly good! Russpower wins this one!

Posted by jlmcgui on April 10, 2009 at 11:34 PM

Hey, didn't you used to be Brian McCabe? Time to retire, what good is a rugid defenseman getting beat up by a goal scorer?

Posted by neiljc on April 10, 2009 at 11:38 AM

There is something really cool about the latest batch of Russians (Malkin, Ovechkin, Kovalchuk) that you just have to love. Win Kovalchuk in an unexpectedly great showing. That's why he has the "C".

Posted by bruins rule on April 10, 2009 at 08:30 AM

kovalchuk with the surprising win in this fight.

Posted by ogie ogiltorpe on April 10, 2009 at 01:26 PM

angry Russian is right! wow!

Posted by siltmipa on April 10, 2009 at 05:25 AM

Nice job. I donĀ“t like fights were Russian skaters normally hang and fight with 100 pounds lesser players. But this was cool to watch. W for K

Posted by prorobo on April 10, 2009 at 03:04 PM

Kovalchuk impressed me. But seriously, what moron voted for McCabe?

Posted by RoboSmash on April 10, 2009 at 12:23 PM

Kovalchuck always wins when he throws them. PS detfan- if the "det" stands for detroit- you know where the real sh*thole is. There's a reason Atlanta's growing at +20% a decade and detroit is shrinking at an even greater rate. You're an idiot. All detroit is good for is getting to Windsor!

Posted by flyguy64 on April 10, 2009 at 09:15 AM

I can hear Don Cherry now.

Posted by nikcanada on April 15, 2009 at 12:18 AM

It was a good fight because Kovalchuk simply surprised us all -- Including McCabe. The pure athlete beat the slob. Win Kovalchuk.

Posted by thrashersrule on May 09, 2009 at 05:43 PM

Kovalchuk is a better fighter than people think. he is very underrated

Posted by Lister100 on April 11, 2009 at 09:41 AM

McCabe is a punk and got what he deserves.

Posted by Stuntman Mike on April 11, 2009 at 02:27 PM

Posted by Evilman on April 10, 2009 at 06:30 AM

Ilya simply beautiful, chic fight and held his opponent smashed !!!!! Way to go !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let the Russians know and be afraid fo us.

Posted by dubieaddict17 on April 11, 2009 at 05:15 PM

great fight, definite win for ilya

Posted by dropkick25 on April 11, 2009 at 06:19 PM

This was not much of a fight really, unless there is a curve when it comes to a skilled Russian attempting to fight,it's a 2 at best. If you beleive otherwise watch the slo mo.

Posted by perezj on April 10, 2009 at 10:22 AM

An angry Russian? These annoucers have to get off the pipe. Mccabe slipped and the angry Russian hit him when he was doen on the ice, real classy move...

Posted by TrueBlue26 on April 10, 2009 at 12:40 PM

looked like 2 middle schoolers fighting...all over the place failing away at each other draw

Posted by claire alexande on April 10, 2009 at 07:23 PM

ilya is an idiot. then again, mccabe can't fight. draw, since nothing landed.

Posted by Boogeyman2383 on April 10, 2009 at 07:47 AM

How did this a 5?

Posted by Cherndig on April 10, 2009 at 02:44 PM

Kovalchuk got lucky. It's going to go to his head and he's goingto get beat down. No ones got comments about him fighting like Crosby? Kovalchuk did good but why all the love for a russian trying to be tough? Win Kovalchuk

Posted by J.R. Abel on April 11, 2009 at 09:06 AM

Interesting scrap. Have to give a slight edge to Kovy for tossing McCabe around but didn't look like anything really landed by either guy. Looked like McCabe slipped on a glove and never really got balanced.

Posted by azjim on April 10, 2009 at 05:23 AM

McCabe didn't know what to do. Win Kovy.

Posted by chinmusic on April 11, 2009 at 01:07 AM

McCabe does a river dance while lying on his back.

Posted by knuckleup14 on April 10, 2009 at 11:35 AM

i do not believe my eyes..... yeah. mccabe was obviusly off balance. butwatch the fight, all he cared about was AVOIDING KOVALCHUKS punches. i dont believe this. LMAO. next up: alex ovechkin vs ian white( who seems toget every non fighter in the world to go with him)

Posted by BuffaloSquad on April 10, 2009 at 09:08 AM

Much props to Kovalchuk, really liked how they both dropped the lids. McCabe gets thrown around like b*tch. Also enjoyed the flair at the end, Kovalchuk becoming one of my favorite players that i never see.

Posted by Andyman on April 10, 2009 at 09:28 PM

You want to see a real superstar fight and not drag a man to the ice and pray that the officials step in before any real fists are thrown (or how a Captain actually goes man vs man without having a teammate hold the opponent down while you hit him in the nads) then watch this clip. What fucktard said this was a draw? Really? or that McCabe won? I would love to see Kovy and Crosby go next year but you know Crosby doesnt have the guts to have a real fight with anyone, much less Kovy.

Posted by travist on April 10, 2009 at 11:24 PM

holy crap!! first time watching this i thought it was mccabe throwing them, then i saw it again! very nice from the scoring machine kovachuk! drop 'em more often!!

Posted by bigmj on April 13, 2009 at 06:04 AM

Kovalchuk clearly showed he is one of the top tier players in the NHL...McCabe is trash and Kovy took the garbage out! It was great to be in the stands for this bout. Thrasher fans love the "Angry Russian"

Posted by blacknblueland on April 10, 2009 at 11:21 AM

When we were watching this happen in the arena I think the whole crowd was just in shock until Kovy started egging us on. It was awesome!

Posted by hydr4 on April 14, 2009 at 04:58 PM

Anyone who beats McCabe becomes one of my favourite players
