Thumping Thursday
Big night last night. Maybe it was the warm temps in many cities, maybe it’s Valentine’s Day getting close, but whatever it was, there wasn’t a lot of love to spread around in the NHL last night.
Three fights in last night’s Ducks–Rangers game. Brian Sutherby and Brandon Dubinsky started things off behind the play after Sutherby hit a kneeling Dubinsky into the boards. The two got tangled up while getting back to their feet and then dropped the gloves. Seconds later, heavyweights George Parros and Colton Orr went at it.
Ryan Carter went after Ryan Hollweg in the third after Hollweg came close to taking out Carter with a knee-on-knee hit.
A pair of scraps stemming from hits occurred in the Canucks–Thrashers game. Eric Boulton hammered Jeff Cowan in the first period while Nathan McIver and Chris Thorburn went blow for blow later on.
Aaron Voros picked up a misconduct for throwing punches at Krys Barch after their fight hit the ice. A little unnecessary in my opinion, especially in a fight where Voros may have lost but certainly wasn’t embarrassed.
Adam Burish and Mark Smith went right off of a faceoff during Blackhawks–Flames. Craig Adams tried to get Jarome Iginla to go later in the game but ended up shedding the mitts with David Hale in a quick scrap instead.
Hillary Duff will make a man out of you
Mike Comrie was a machine for the Islanders last night. Unfortunately for the Isles, a goal, a fight, and then another goal later in the game wasn’t enough, and the Pens won the game 4-3. Comrie’s fight against Maxime Talbot was his second of the year making this the first season Comrie’s had more than one fighting major.
Weller Leaves His Mark
Craig Weller took it to the Columbus Blue Jackets last night, literally.
After hitting Rick Nash from behind into the boards, Weller shoved Dan Fritsche to the ice before one-punching a charging Ole-Kristian Tollefsen. Video can be seen here.
Weller was ejected from the game for his antics and a match penalty handed to him means that the league will be reviewing the tape. After laying on the ice for a few moments, Tollefsen left the ice and didn’t return. He will be out indefinitely with a concussion according to The Columbus Dispatch.
When asked about Weller, Coyotes head coach Wayne Gretzky provided the quote of the night:
“Weller definitely popped the kid… I don’t think the kid was going up to him to get his autograph.”
