McSorley nails Doug Gilmour with an open-ice hit, causing Clark to go straight after him. The two go toe-to-toe with rights, McSorley knocking Clark's helmet off during the exchange. McSorley continues to throw rights while Clark holds on. McSorley then throws four rights to the back of Clark's head while his jersey comes off. Clark returns fire with a right and McSorley gets in a few more rights of his own before the linesmen step in. Other Penalties: Clark received an instigator and game misconduct; McSorley an elbowing major.
Any normal human would have been sleeping after that Clark anvil. McSorley is tough.
A classic... shows the kind of Captain Clark was.
What the clip does not show is Mcsorley geting run from behind during the fight by one of the Leafs and knocking him to his knees. That's the only reason it was even close. Gilmour was such a Bitch anyway...
Love how McSorley blocks the camera so no one can see his hambergered face. Win Wendel on severe damage.
The first four right hands that Wendel threw did more damage than McSorley and his fans would like to admit. His face was a MESS after this fight and Wendel looked unscathed. I love Wendel and have to admit that He was the winner here. Wendel is a terrier, eh. And if you've ever owned a terrier (of any kind) you know what I mean.
Clark won, hands down. McSorley's Rob Ray at the end didn't fool me. Not a mark on Wendel, who by the way is 5'11 190lbs. Owned him in 1996 with the Islanders too.
WOW, some scrap. Bit of a elbow from Mcsorley on Gilmour to start things off. Which McSorley knew would've started something off. Sure enough Clark came racing over, clark got the early advantage throwing rights, but Mcsorley's a battler and came right back towards the end. A good attempt from Clark but Mcsorley came out the better fighter.
Is everyone forgetting just how much damage McSorley suffered in this fight? His left eye was turned into hamburger when he forgot to play defence with concrete handed Clark. McSorley is tough as nails and took it like a champ but Clark still wins decisively on points due to major facial trauma on Marty.
I remember watching this on tv and probably the best fight ive ever seen just due to the playoffs and everything. I also remember the news showing Mcsorleys face after the fight and Clarks face. Clark was clean without a scratch from the fight while Mcsorleys face was cut open and bruised like he was in a car accident. Despite the fact the Mcsorley clearly threw more Clark had been on the ice for a while and was already tired, Clark hit Mcsorley with 4 strait bombs to the face. Win for #17
Clark was the clear winner of this fight. He landed some hay-makers early in the fight and did the most damage as seen in the paper the following day. Front page of the Toronto Sun showed McSorley with a black eye that was almost swollen shut. McSorley landed some shots at the end but most of them were to the back of Wendel's head. Wendel was one of the best ever and the clear winner of this classic bout.
My vote is for Clark, I agree that the facial marks after the fight, truly show who really won. I think its quality over quantity on this one. Pound for pound, who was really tougher, and was more fearless in their careers. Clark never had to use his stick as a weapon in his career.
Clark definitely fought the smarter fight, and laid the heavier hits. Anybody who doubts this should have seen the Toronto Sun the next day showing Mcsorley's face... it was brutal (Clark had no marks). Actually, you can see Mcsorley's beaten face as he skates off... embarrassed he tries to cover the camera.
I was at that game with my dad. Clark was tired at the end of a shift yet still went after Marty. The crowd went wild! Clark busted up McSorley's face . The Toronto Sun showed a pic of Marty trying to cover the camera as he left the ice. His face was mashed up good. Yes Clark held on at the end to the much bigger opponent but to us that witnessed it he clearly won the fight. More landed punches; McSorley didnt land a single good punch. If Clark was fresh on the ice at the time of the fight he would have destroyed him as he was really ticked off about the hit to Gilmour.
It was McSorley hanging in there, not Clark. Clark pounded McSorley with 3 or 4 rights right off the bat. McSorley's a tough bugger and he kept going, but his face was a mess after this one. Clark left without a scratch on him.
The first shot Clark lands is one of the hardest punchest I've seen in a hockey fight -- I saw Clark land a few of those in his day and McSorely is the only guy who stayed upright, so full marks to him there. The first half is a slugfest with Clark holding the edge. McSorely made up some ground at the end once his jersey was off, although he was pretty gassed at that point. McSorely landed more shots, but slight edge to Clark for landing the bigger punches. Great scrap, both guys deserve a ton of credit.
Stuff of legend, i voted a clark win, quite apart from the serious damage done to McS, this fight permanently affected both fighters reps, it was the high point of Clark's fighting career ( or career period) and the start of a slow slide to the bottom for McSorley
No way did McSorley win this one. Like others have said, he was in the paper the next day with a huge black eye/messed up face. In fact, McSorley missed the next game as well due to his injuries. You can almost see it in the video when McSorley covers the camera as he walks to the dressing room - obviously ashamed and hiding the damage.
McSorely may have landed more, but Clark made his count.
This may be the most memorable fights in Leafs history. It proved that not only did Clark step up for Gilmour, but that it ignited one of the best playoff series of all-time. Imagine this Leafs fans, if the Leafs win game 6 or 7 (damn Frasier), there in the cup final, something Leafs Nation has been craving for over 40 years. Overall, it was a close bout but Clark gets the upperhand for defending the Leafs #1 player.
Wendel, Wendel, Wendel!!!
Watch ,re watch ,and watch again . You will see Wendel deliver several punishing shots to the face of Mcsorley. He destroyed a once promising modeling career for Marty as i hear to this day that he refuses to be photographed on that side of his melon. Total team player and a captain for the ages...how we lost the series to LA is unbelievable.
Great tilt! Clark gets the win on damage and quality shots landed. Marty was game but clearly lost this one.
Clark did his best, but McSorley was one of the best ever.
oh wow clark landed 4 punches wooo!!!! you make clark seem like he was a god!!! nope he isn't.mcsorley clealry won that fight.and clark was a dirty dirty fighter.he has jumped alot of guys in his day to get the upper hand...if you look at when he faught neely,if you seen the whole clip.clark jumps neely and starts whaling away neely didn't even have his gloves off.how about when clark was punching peluso whe he was down.clark was just as dirty as the rest. oh and wow mcsorley had a black..wow it was a fight someone got hit..atleat mcsorley kept going.clark tanked out after 4 punches,4 punches that didn't even faze marty, but marty kept going.if we voted winners on a couple hrd punches, fights would be so screwed up
Clark was tough...but Lucic doesn't drop them with Laraque and suddenly he's Steve Ott? There must be a middle ground here somewhere.
This hit gave the kings some momentum and it carried them to a hard fought series win in 7 games. Clark landed a couple of bombs but McSorley dominated the latter stages to gain the slight edge.
A classic heavyweight fight.. Could have been a draw . Clark caught McSorley at the beginning of the fight but McSorley finished strong. Edge McSorley.
They both did it very well, a long scrap. LionMarty EDGED Clark? Maybe, tough to call. Clark's moment was a very good in the start, as he lands 4 heavy rights flush to the mark but LionMarty lands one solid right to the side of Clark's helmet and lands soon a heavy right to the face of Clark. But Clark won that exchange. McSorley was active later as he lost his jersey. LionMarty OUTPOINTED/OUTMATCHED Clark but Clark's early moment was a BIG ONE. So i put a DRAW for the outcome.
Draw the DRAW now!,,,,,
Amazing how McSorely absorbed those early Clark shots. He had a super-shiner for a good month after this scrap,IIRC. On endurance he gets it but on quality blows it's Clark.
Marty threw a lotta " air balls"....no damage, Wendell rocked him hard with a few. I like Marty, but i like Wendell more in this one! wow connely, loss for words? Nice Post....good lord!
For those who voted for McSorley you must be forgetting the mark Clark left on his face. It was shown the next day on the paper, McSorley with a big black eye, his eye was almost swollen shut after the fight. No way did McSorley win the fight, maybe he landed more, but Clark landed harder and clearer shots.
Having a tough time seeing how so many people saw Marty winning this bout. Marty was hit by a few heavy bombs early in the fight. He came back to score several minor hits to *maybe* even it out. This is a testament to his ability as a fighter- most guys would have been floored by those early bombs. The telling part is where Marty puts his hand over the camera as he leaves the ice...
Clark was tougher than people realize
I give it to Clark due to landing the harder punches.
Bill Clement called Clark a "wolverine", and when he was angry, like here, he could damage a guy. Win for the major shiner he inflicted on a very tough McSorley, who royally deserved it for the headhunting elbow. the announcers said Gilmour's head was down, but it was obviously not. I agree this seemed to be the start of Marty's decline.
McSorley absolutely lambastes Dougie Gilmoure at center ice, Clark takes umbrage to it and runs MM only to get destroyed in the process. I give the fight a 6 and Marty's hit a 10!
Clark is good, but he was a punching bag, I don't care how it started, McSorley kicked his a$$
Great toe to toe fight. I would have called it a draw but McSorly had more gas and took the end of the fight.
What a bunch of morons thinking Clark won this fight hands down.
Clark landed some heavy punches early, but credit - I hate to say it - McSorley for hanging in there and making a comeback.
Great fight. Edge Marty McSorley.
Wow cant believe some of these posts, but lots have it right also cause it is plain as day Clark was clear winner, landed 4 huge right hands after straight to the map of Marty, who is tough and can take punch cause he staggered and most guys would have been sleeping right there, Marty throws a few rights to side of head and then Marty goes huggy bear a bit cause hes hurt and doesn't want to continue trading with Wendels piston like rights and lefts, then gives Wendel rabbit punches to back and side of head and that's when people think he won, like few said he didn't land hardly any ,or any power shots at all, and then poor Marty had to hide his face from camera which it looked like a beat up tomato, and one eye blistered shut cause he knew he lost that fight plain and simple im sure hed admit it today.
The always tough Clark goes all Mike Tyson's Punch-Out on one of the game's all-time enforcers. Haymakers abound. Win Clark and an OMFG 9.
doug went down like a bitch and mcsorley rock clark after
Ummmm....nice description of the events *connelly*..." mcsorley rock clark after"...does that pass for english these days? wow! anyways...I suppose you totally missed Clark landing the 4 most solid shots of the bout on Marty's face. When it came to fighting, Clark was a sprinter - landing early and often...McSorley was a long distance fighter and just never stopped - kinda like the Terminator. He was a rock and amongst the best but I still give the fight to Clark for the better power shots. Or as *connelly* would put it - "mcsorley smacked much by clark fists".
Wendel didn't let Marty get away with the elbow on Duggy. Definetly throttled Marty with the heaviest shot of the fight!
