Maybe Orr's hands were too high on the hit, but probably not. Hardly a dirty play, though. And if they're going to make up a penalty where there isn't one, why wouldn't they go with roughing? Interference? Cullen had the puck! What's next? A diving major? How about an automatic misconduct for sending the puck out of play in your own zone? Dirty hit or not (and it looks pretty clean to me), kudos to Commodore for sticking up for Cullen, and kudos to Orr for laying off when Commodore went down.

Posted by Tony Esposito on December 27, 2007 at 02:17 AM

Somebody had to stand up to Orr on that one though. Kudos to Commodore for standing in there.

Posted by capsfloors on December 27, 2007 at 10:25 AM

Not much of a fight Orr guys that claim this was a dirty hit need to watch the video again....his hands don't hit Cullen's face....Orr's face was was cut by Cullen's helmet....therefore no hands blocking Cullen's helmet to Orr's to the 5min major for interference and the game misconduct was bull..the puck was just dropped by Cullen to his teammate when he got hit...where was the 2min for instigating on Commodore? Horsesh!t calls! Who voted for Commodore?

Posted by Rynryn on December 27, 2007 at 09:58 AM

Orr easily. And that was a clean hit. I swear to god the definition of a "dirty" hit changes each time someone gets injured--soon it will be narrowed down to contact only on the logo. no shoulders! the padding in there makes them "weapons"! Bunch of pansy-arsed whiners. Good of Commodore to take one for the team.

Posted by avolante0371 on December 27, 2007 at 07:28 AM

wow when scott stevens hits like that its ok ....not even close to a penalty the ref that was right there never even put his hand up.if stillman didnt land face first it would be a great hit..just like ive said all year round THE OFFICALS IN THE NHL ARE THE WORST IN SPORTS, THATS WHY NOONE WATCHES THIS SPORT. my bad i meant Cullen..watched it again he had the puck and hit him chest to chest..INTERFERNCE MAJOR?????? NOW IVE SEEN EVERYTHING FROM THESE CRAPTASTIC REFS

Posted by jbaker3924 on December 27, 2007 at 10:22 AM

I cannot stand Colton Orr but I disagree with the penalty. I thought it was a clean hit on a guy skating across the middle of the ice with his head down. Commodore gets credit for standing up to him.

Posted by JDForCommish on December 27, 2007 at 09:12 AM

Sorry, hate to break the news to you Ranger haters out there but the hit was clean and the hands were down. The penalty was not for charging or elbowing but for interference which makes no sense being that Cullen had the puck. It was more of a open ice collision then a check. They actually collided heads and Orr had 3 seperate cuts to his face. They were teammates last year and you can tell Orr was looking over at Cullen to make sure he was ok even while fighting with Commodore. Orr is a tough guy willing to fight anyone but he has never been a dirty player. As for the fight is was nothing, Orr had no interest in fighting and seemed more concerned if Cullen was ok and the blood that was pouring in his eye during the fight. Nice job by Commodore coming over to a teammates defense though, always respect that whether the hit was clean or not. There will surely be no suspension here.

Posted by Juha82 on December 27, 2007 at 06:14 AM

Not much of fight, about 4-5 punch by Orr, 2-3 by Commodore. Orr lands one though. Commodore went down missing his punch and Orr took over clearly as he would beat him if he wants. A narrow win for Orr. That hit? maybe clean hit, but i am not full sure.

Posted by SirYohans on December 28, 2007 at 12:02 AM

They call that a dirty hit? That's about as clean/solid a body check u are ever gonna see. It's like the refs were scrambling to make up some bullsit call just cause Cullen was laid out. Orr wins the fight which wasn't much but he landed 1 and then Commador basically turtled. Orr was paying more attention to make sure his buddy from last year Cullen was ok instead of fighting... Or we would've had 2 Hurricanes laid out on the ice... If they suspend Orr for the hit, the NHL has become a joke. The 5 minute interference major on a guy who was controlling the puck is a joke in itself.

Posted by bulldogs on December 27, 2007 at 09:25 AM

You cant even hit hard in this league anymore WTF. Someone said keep your hands down, ya right! Ever try and smash into your buddy at that speed without your arms up you moron. It was a good hit and if the Hurrifags were not such a pussy team with Lavolette as the big pussy shit like that would not happen. But Lavo likes to exploit the fighting in this league by not dressing an enforcer and taking advantage of the power play. Well you suck Lavo and your team lost that game and morally your team is in the shitter and I hope you get fired you suck ass.

Posted by rangersofsweden on December 27, 2007 at 07:46 AM

Are everybody blind her or what? this is not a penalty this is a clean hit! Orrs hands are to the chest and not to his face.if you look at the replays you can see that its Orrs head who knocks out cullen who has the puck and i can´t understand why he get´s a 5 for interference? GOOD HIT who took bad thats all don´t even think about suspension if so the league should watch every open ice hit in the nhl!

Posted by Zodijackyl on January 20, 2008 at 04:29 AM

Bad call against Orr, but he stood up well in the fight, dominated Commodore.

Posted by trpaulson on December 29, 2007 at 12:41 PM

Draw. Not much of a fight. Credit to Commodore who was never much of a fighter to go after Orr who is. Questionable hit by Orr.

Posted by christib17 on February 10, 2008 at 02:06 PM

Orr deserves every hit and more - don't mess with my Canes!

Posted by dropkick25 on December 27, 2007 at 10:25 PM

Enough with the Dirty Hit comments, what are you looking at? They banged heads. And Cullen should keep his head up.Orr could have hurt him much worse if he wanted too,but he is not a headhunter.Couldn't really see the fight,CarrotTop did what he had to,good for him.The Refs totally pussed out .I understand they miss things sometimes but making up shit c'mon.Awful,Awful call. Open ice hits will soon be non existent .Go back to 1 ref.

Posted by KORPI24 on December 27, 2007 at 10:35 AM

In no way was this a dirty hit, or a cheapshot, plain and simple. Giving any penalty for the hit would be bad, giving a 5 minute interference major is another disgrace to the No Hit League.

Posted by knuckles28 on December 27, 2007 at 09:31 PM

Good clean hit, To all the kids out there, KEEP YOUR HEAD UP! Commodore turtled. win Orr easily.

Posted by moncoacp on January 05, 2008 at 02:06 PM

Started by typical Orr-Hollweg-Avery cheap head hunt. Arms and stick up while trying to wipe out smaller opponent. Stevens always hit with his shoulder not with his gloves and stick. Hit may not have been directly to the head but not because cheap shot Orr wasn't trying. Both gloves and stick up in the upper chest area. Be a friggin man and put your shoulder into the guy skating with his head down.

Posted by NYRFREAK11719 on December 28, 2007 at 12:07 AM

Orr landed more punches and Commodore went down first, have to give it to Orr... plus that hit was crazy, I was at the game.

Posted by joeye4 on December 29, 2007 at 08:23 AM

Just a player who felt he had to stand up for his teammate. Orr is clearly a better fighter. My issue is with bulldog who for some reason feels the need to use the term suck ass. Cant you get your point across without stooping to this level. I am not a prude nor do I refrain from swearing sometimes but please not in a public forum. I agreed with your assessment but found your grammar, well a bit over the top.

Posted by b4mv01 on December 29, 2007 at 02:55 PM

Orr slaughtered Commodore. It is nice to see that the league rescinded the major that was given to him though. It was a hard, but clean, hit on Cullen. Thankfully neither men have any significant injuries, as Colton to had several cuts and a swollen left eye the next day.

Posted by TBLightningGuru on February 14, 2008 at 09:36 PM

Im giving the win to commodore because he stepped in. That was a cheap shot hit by a cheap shot player in Colton Orr. Classless play and is wrecking the Orr last name

Posted by JOCCOCHRIS on December 27, 2007 at 11:05 AM

Clean hit-they just hit heads. I don't think he should be suspended at all.

Posted by snaggletooth on December 27, 2007 at 02:13 AM

Not able to see much of the fight but Orr looked like he had total control.Orr wins, just for that open ice hit.

Posted by kocurfan26 on December 27, 2007 at 03:24 PM

Absolutely clean hit. Ok fight. edge to Orr

Posted by 9darter on December 28, 2007 at 08:57 AM

Just two players doing their jobs. Commodore gets paid to challenge Orr because of the Cullen hit. Once they start to fight MC just wants to survive and holds on to CO's right arm for dear life. CO knows the deal and has no wish to beat MC up more than necessary.

Posted by YRU Blind on December 27, 2007 at 11:20 PM

Not a Orr fan but that was a CLEAN hit period.

Posted by squinny72 on December 27, 2007 at 06:29 PM

How did they give him interference on the hit ? HE HAD THE PUCK. This is the reason I don't watch the NHL anymore.I would rather drive an hour to watch a 'AA' Johnstown Cheifs game than drive 5 minutes and watch Cindy Crybaby(AKA crosby) & the Pittsburgh Pens play.

Posted by chad420 on June 03, 2009 at 11:00 PM

sickass hit orr...clean hit colton...good job steppin up MC

Posted by dibari_22 on December 27, 2007 at 12:10 PM

KEEP YOUR HEAD UP. if you get injured on a hit like this, it's your own fault by not keeping your head up and not being aware of your surroundings. nighty-night cullen.

Posted by redwhiteblue on December 27, 2007 at 07:56 AM

Go back to sleep NJteech.

Posted by travist on July 29, 2015 at 12:27 AM

clean hit followed by another orr beat commodore fight.

Posted by foiledup on March 01, 2008 at 11:58 AM

Orr with the huge hit and with the win v.s. Commodore.

Posted by caneshockeyfan on December 27, 2007 at 10:59 AM

As a Canes fan, I hated to see that hit, but it was marginal at worst. It did seem like Cullen was a target all night before that. As for the fight, Commodore has just come off a broken finger that caused him to miss a few games. I'm sure he wouldn't be fighting unless circumstances demanded it, like this did. I do hope the Canes take this as a wake up call and do something about stepping up their physicality. They've been getting manhandled lately and it's becoming tough to watch.

Posted by headcharge on December 27, 2007 at 12:05 PM

As much as I hate Orr, cheap f*cker, that was a clean, old-fashioned, open-iced hit. That wasn't a dirty hit and those crying dirty hit, this is the NHL. If you don't like it, go back to college womens hockey. This is a tough game and there are enough dirty players throwing dirty hits. This was not one of them. There is a reason my Peewee coaches on up always said, "Keep your head up!" Cullen was watching his pretty play, admiring his handiwork when he should've been concerned about the Ranger's 4th line. And what the hell would North Carolina know about a good v. clean hit anyway? Cane fans, sucks when its your man who gets lined up and leveled, but take the blinders off. It was a good hit. Simon on Ruutu, dirty... Downey on MacHammond, dirty... Ohlund on Koivu, dirty... Orr on Cullen, clean.

Posted by bugeatsdirtx on January 26, 2008 at 10:00 PM

didnt look like a dirty hit, but commodore had to come over to protect...orr showed class by not fighting back - i dont think he intended to injure cullen and was more concerned with cullen than commodore's weak attempt at justice

Posted by Sukoshi84 on December 27, 2007 at 03:37 PM

im not a fan of orr or the rags AT ALL!!!!! but from what i saw a few times that was a clean hit and a good one.........there can be all the arguments about hands up and what not......but if you have ever played puck you know that there is not much you can do, orr is a big boy with about 225lbs on him so at that speed someone is gonna get Fuked up............orr has my respect, after what he did to the fridge last year he felt like shit about it, and contacted todd to make sure he was ok.........that how you man up, i honestly dont think orr is a dirty player who was going head hunting on that hit.....props to commodore for standing up for his team mate, against someone who could easliy wipe the floor with him

Posted by nycbob on December 27, 2007 at 11:01 AM

Good hit, good fight. rangers need more edge in their game. what the hell is a 5 minute interference major? Its either a charge or not?? orrs hands hit hit in shoulder/chest it was the head that did the damge to both of them, maybe even when cullens face hit the ice. definately not suspension worthy. We need orr around to keep wailing on the broad street bitches!

Posted by mAnYsTyLeS on December 27, 2007 at 12:19 PM

The NHL referees are horrible and this sport will eventually turn into sh*t. I can't believe the calls they made. Pretty soon we're going to see players in skirts - seriously. Colton Orr is not dirty. I've been watching him for YEARS and he's never done a dirty thing...except to maybe Ovechkin, but he had a reason. Bottom line is that he was very concerned about Cullen and didn't even care about Commodore (even though he did win the fight). The hit on Cullen was as clean as my ass...huh? Seriously though, Colton's head hit Cullen's head - case closed. Even Orr was bloodied from the hit!!!!!!! I hope this bullsh*t stops or else the NHL will be ruined forever...forrrreeevvvveeerrrrr.....fffffoooooorrrrreeeeevvvveeeerrrrr.

Posted by domiruled on December 28, 2007 at 12:50 AM

clean hit, commodore had to stand up for cullen, kudos for orr for not punching commodore when he had him down at end of fight

Posted by Nightmare on February 13, 2008 at 01:40 PM

Commodore doing what he has to do here. Hats off to him. Orr wins the uneventful fight, not much here though. What a hit on Cullen!

I tell you guys if Orr was a Flyer he would have gotten a couple games for that hit. The elbows were down but he had his hands too high. This kind of hit is unnecessary. Why kill a guy that ins't looking? Give him a chance to see it coming. I wasn't sad to see Orr beat Commodore though, don't like him much...

Posted by tappaja on December 28, 2007 at 10:21 AM

That was an clean hit

Posted by jd99gtNYR on December 27, 2007 at 01:22 AM

Could really tell much, but it looked like Orr was controlling the fight. He threw one inside shot that might of landed. Commodore is just standing up for his teammate, he really had no businness being in a fight with Orr. Win Orr

Clean Hit!!!!!!!!!!! NHL is trying to take away hitting. sucks. Ref felt like he had to call something just cause he saw cullen down.

Posted by bostonrs555 on December 27, 2007 at 09:07 PM

The Interference Major was a JOKE!!! Hit looked good to me, I mean what is Orr supposed to do?!?!? I love it when lttle speedheads get laid out!!!!! Orr should have gotten 5 for Fighting and thats it!!!! Commodore should have gotten 2,5,10, the game misconduct, 40k fine, and 40 game suspension!!!! SIMONIZE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by TrueBlue26 on December 27, 2007 at 07:06 PM

Good Hit dont think orr ment to hurt him, they were teamates last year so i dont see bad blood. ok scrap and decision to orr

Posted by pvdrummer2000 on February 08, 2013 at 11:58 PM

Orr got the two for one on that play. Great hit and a great beatdown!

Posted by nypd6476 on December 27, 2007 at 09:16 AM

Colton orr along with ryan hollweg are two of the biggest ******* in the league. Neither one of them know how to hit and neither one of them definitly know how to fight.. Every time they fight they fight they lose and I enjoy every minute of it. That dirty hit on Cullen goes right along witht the hit simon put on hollweg enough said.

Posted by dansal55 on December 27, 2007 at 07:03 AM

Orr got his hands up, but he caught Cullen looking at the puck. Not a clean hit, but I've seen much worse. I didn't see an elbow, just a double fist to the face. Commodore did what he had to do, and I think Orr knew the deal and didn't fight with the normal amount of fury. Really not much of a fight. Orr might get New Year's off.

Posted by dmk139 on December 27, 2007 at 03:09 AM

as a Ranger fan, dirty hit. but hey, Cullen had his head down and had a big hit coming. you just cant skate that carelessly or you will get killed. Commodore has to stick up for his man, Orr was kind enough not to pummel him.

Posted by Poop Jack Pappy on December 27, 2007 at 07:37 PM

Cheap shot by Orr. Obviously the announcers were homers. Orr should be suspended for the gutless hit. Orr did win the fight.

Posted by waynegibbous on December 27, 2007 at 07:56 PM

Since when is Commodore not tough and Colton Orr 'Chuck Norris Reborn'? Orr loses most of his fights but you people act like this was gazelle vs. lion. Wake up you myopians. Orr plays like 3 minutes a game.

Posted by slav on December 27, 2007 at 12:53 PM

Another bullshyt hit! Hands have never been part of a legal body check, EVER! Yet it has been permitted since hockey has been around (makes absolutely no sense). The so-called fight was nothing to talk about.

Posted by Jake98 on December 27, 2007 at 06:06 AM

Dirty hit...He should've kept his hands down.

Posted by chl37 on December 27, 2007 at 08:34 AM

dirty hit.

Posted by Dovermv on December 27, 2007 at 12:06 PM

Orr is a punk. I guess he had to do something to make him feel like a man again. After Brashear made him look like a woman i think he feel like he had to do something.

Posted by bam932 on December 27, 2007 at 03:59 PM

Kudos to Commodore for stepping up. Not much of a scrap, I'll call it a draw

Posted by rocky7482 on December 27, 2007 at 05:42 PM

Commodore get the win, in total domination...Here is why. I like Colton Orr. He's a hard nosed enforcer who is not a defensive liability, however that hit on Cullen was cheap and totally uncalled for. Kudos for Commodore for stepping up, knowing (but not caring) about the inevitable outcome. We miss that guy in Cowtown!

Posted by lovejoy on December 27, 2007 at 04:20 AM

kudos to Comm for standing up for his teammate. it was dirty hit, Orr's hands were too high against neck and face, with his hands down it would have looked much better.

Posted by Jointman on December 27, 2007 at 03:35 AM

I hope Brash will kill Or next time they go on. Brash will always do a solid job on him. Dirty hit and I hope Orr will get a few games off !!!

Posted by njteech on December 27, 2007 at 06:42 AM

CHEAP hit....Good job by Commodore....Hope the league suspends Orr, got the guy when he was vulnerable, interference major and game misconduct, classy guy. Could have worse, broken nose is bad enough.
