Terry Murray Wants to Finish Career in NHL

Flyers GM Ron Hextall says he didn’t want to stand in former Phantoms coach Terry Murray’s way

Hextall explained what happened with Murray, who was said to be close to rejoining the Flyers’ staff just a few weeks ago. Then Buffalo — whose general manager, Tim Murray, is Terry’s nephew — came calling. Hextall didn’t stand in his way.

“I sat down with Terry at the end of the season in Allentown,” Hextall explained. “I told him he was not going to be a candidate for the head coaching job, and he said he didn’t expect to be. I asked him, I said, ‘Terry, you’ve been around a long time, and I have a lot of respect for you. What do you want to do?’ He said, ‘I really want to finish my career in the NHL.’ That’s fair.”

After consulting with new head coach Dave Hakstol, Hextall was comfortable bringing his three assistants back.

“Dave and I went through the process of looking at the field and seeing what’s out there,” Hextall said. “Dave sat down with all our guys, between face to face and the phone, numerous times.
