A discussion of this issue — do you want your best players fighting? — often is mistaken for a debate on whether fighting belongs in the game, period.

But that’s NOT the issue here.

This is: It’s unwise and even irresponsible to have your highly paid, top goal-scorer — whether a power forward and a talented fighter, or an undersized center — fighting.

When writing a major feature about Stewart during his breakout 2009-10 season, I raised the issue with Avalanche coach Joe Sacco last season.
