Prust Quickly Making Impact
Anyone that has followed Brandon Prust‘s career knows that he’s as willing as anyone when it comes to dropping the gloves. How willing? He averaged 24 fights a year while in the AHL and had similar numbers in juniors. An NHL mainstay so far this season, Prust has remained just as active.
The rookie picked up his 8th and 9th fighting majors in Flames–Blackhawks last night to move ahead of Riley Cote and grab the league-lead in fighting majors. Prust had a decent scrap with Troy Brouwer early in the third period and then went out of his weight class to face Matt Walker later on.
Other fights from Sunday included Brad Staubitz going up against Garth Murray in Sharks–Coyotes and Sheldon Souray fighting for the first time this season against David Clarkson in Oilers–Devils. The night’s only heavyweight bout – Wade Brookbank vs Eric Boulton – was unfortunately part of a non-televised game.
“Mac” suffers broken orbital bone
Steve MacIntyre‘s impressive run came to an end this past Thursday when he was beaten by a more-experienced fighter in Eric Godard. Godard hit MacIntyre with some good shots, and it turns out that one of them broke MacIntyre’s orbital bone. Redemption will now have to wait as MacIntyre will be sidelined for the near future:
MacIntyre didn’t even know he’d been injured till “I went to blow my nose the whole side of my face swelled up.” Painful, but maybe not too surprising. Godard has one of the heaviest punches in the league, ask Derek Boogaard, who missed time with a concussion after losing to him last season.
“I knew going into the fight that I was fighting one of the tougher guys in the league,” said MacIntyre. “In my job, you live by the sword and you die by the sword. There’s going to be those nights where you take a couple to give a couple and unfortunately I took a couple too many, that’s the way it goes. It’s not going to keep me down. We’ll wait till it heals and then it’s back in the saddle again.”
