MSG Media Unearths 1953 Stick Incident
Brutal Hockey Fight in 1953 Finds New Life on Tape
In one swift and brutal sequence during a game in 1953 at Madison Square Garden, the Montreal Canadiens’ Bernard Geoffrion turned his stick into a weapon against Ron Murphy, a left wing for the Rangers.
With a stunning, nearly overhead swing of his stick, Geoffrion smashed Murphy on the left side of his face. Murphy fell to the ice, face-first, with a broken jaw bone and a concussion.
Not a “fight” like you'd see today, but more like Marty McSorley clubbing Donald Brashear in the middle of a scrum.
