Without even participating in a game this season, Brian McGrattan was placed on waivers by the Bruins. According to Bob McKenzie, he has cleared, and will now be assigned to Providence of the AHL.

B's GM Peter Chiarellli claims that the move is salary-related, since Marco Sturm and Marc Savard are due to come off of injured reserve in the near future. Still, Chiarelli didn't rule out the possibility of McGrattan returning at some point:

"I felt it was time for him to go down there," said Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli. "Frankly, it [McGrattan's toughness] was something I thought we might have needed to start the year. I'm not saying we still won't need him. I spoke with him and there's a good chance he'll be back, but it was time to put him down and get him off the cap for one thing. We'll see where it goes from there."
