Just Say No

Colton Orr declining Brian McGrattan‘s invitation to fight on Saturday is getting him praise from Rangers coach Tom Renney:

“I said to Colton, that might have been one of the toughest things you’ve had to do,” coach Tom Renney said. “All he wanted to do was go [fight]. But as with our team, and certainly Colton exemplifies that, it’s about the team and he did the right thing. He was out there to play hockey and win the game.”

Leaving the locker room, Orr was asked how he managed to stay cool. “It was tough … real tough,” he said. But smart.

Another quote from the Post:

“Colton told me on the bench [that turning away from McGrattan] was one of the hardest things he’s had to do,” Tom Renney said after the victory lifted the 15-9-2 Blueshirts to within two points of 16-7-2 Ottawa. “But Colton has been playing with great discipline and, like all our players, understands that it’s all about the team, and all about winning.

“That other stuff [fighting] will always be there, but we want it to be on our terms.”

Of course, if the Rangers were in the reverse position, down 3-0 and Orr was able to get McGrattan to fight, you would have heard similar praise.

I get emails and read a lot of posts in the forums about players picking their spots too much.  What some don’t realize is it’s not always the players, but the coaches picking their spots for them.

Duck a fight and keep your job or go anyway and get scratched next game.  Not a hard decision, really.
