Georges Laraque Still Breaking Expectations
‘It’s my job to break stereotypes’
Mr. Laraque, who before he retired from the NHL last year was best known for his readiness to give and take beatings, now seems to be doing everything possible to shed the tough-guy image. In the past two years, he has become a vegan, a celebrity spokesman for the animal-rights group PETA and deputy leader of the federal Green Party. On the ice, he is now more frequently seen figure skating than playing hockey. And next month he will be a panelist on CBC’s Canada Reads, trying to win a literary showdown by arguing the merits of the novel The Bone Cage.
