Fighting and Enforcers Not the Same Thing

Joe O’Connor: Don’t let Derek Boogaard’s death kill fighting in hockey

And fighting is part of that game, and the part of the 2004 Stanley Cup final that I remember — the only part — besides the sad result for Calgarians, was a fight between Calgary’s hero, Jarome Iginla, and Tampa Bay’s star Vincent Lecavalier.

These were not two goons clubbing each other with their bear paws, circling round and round, in the choreographed circus act we typically associate with a hockey fight. These were two young superstars pushing and shoving behind the net, battling for position and then battling it out with their fists, battling hard for a trophy every Canadian kid dreams about winning.

I rarely, if ever, post an editorial, no matter how much I agree with it. But in all of the re-coverage of Derek Boogaard, this one stood out and I thought I'd share.
