Downie Returns
Steve Downie‘s suspension is over, and the Flyers have recalled him from the Phantoms.
The Flyers play the Wild tonight. If dressed, it’ll be Downie’s NHL debut.
Just as Downie’s suspenion was up, the NHL suspended Riley Cote. That’s the fifth Flyer suspended this season and Gary Bettman has issued a warning to the organization:
Commissioner Gary Bettman has formally told the team that any more incidents could result in disciplinary action such as a large fine against the organization.
The league thinks, “like I do, that these are different coincidences and have to be viewed differently, but the question was raised about ramifications if it happens again,” said Paul Holmgren, the Flyers’ general manager. “Obviously, we’re under watch.”
Avery awaits return
After having surgery on his wrist last Thursday, Sean Avery is ready to get back on the ice:
He missed his third consecutive game but was in a jovial mood yesterday in the workout room at the training center and said he thinks he could be skating in a few days.
…
When it was suggested that he might enjoy Hartford if he was sent to the Wolf Pack for a conditioning stint, Avery cracked: “You’ve got a better chance of seeing God.”
In other Avery news, the FAN 590 in Toronto issued a retraction regarding a report that Avery made “cancer-related remarks” to Jason Blake, who’s been diagnosed with a form of leukemia.
