Derek Boogaard Dead at 28

Derek Boogaard has been found dead in his apartment at the age of 28 according to a tweet by Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune:
Awful news: Derek Boogaard was found dead today in his Minneapolis apartment by members of his family. He was 28.
The Rangers released a statement shortly after confirming Boogaard's passing.
“Derek was an extremely kind and caring individual,” said New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather. “He was a very thoughtful person, who will be dearly missed by all those who knew him. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”
There have been no other details released yet.
Update Sat 825am: For those inquiring (mostly via email) about how or why, Michael Russo has posted: The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed an autopsy would be conducted Saturday.
He also wrote a personal blog post that I encourage everyone to read. Like Mike, one of my first thoughts was about Derek's family, specifically Ryan, who's active everywhere on the web where you could find info about Derek, and simply a great guy. My heart goes out to him and his family.
Update Sat 135pm: The AP is reporting it may be weeks before the cause of Boogaard's death is known.
Update Sat 715pm: Russo is reporting Boogaard's brain will be donated to CSTE, the researchers who are studying for brain disease in athletes.
Larry Brooks of the NY Post has tweeted this:
Post has learned that Derek Boogaard was receiving counseling through NHL/NHLPA Behavorial Health/Substance Abuse Program at time of death.
Brooks followed up saying there will be a story published in the Post tomorrow.
