Brawl on the Isle

It didn’t take very long for the first brawl of the new season to take place as the second period of Islanders–Sabres erupted into three simultaneous fights yesterday afternoon on Long Island.

After Buffalo jumped out to a 4-0 lead, Adam Mair and Nate Thompson decided to drop the gloves following the ensuing faceoff, only to have Craig Rivet grab ahold of Thompson at the beginning of the scrap. Sean Bergenheim immediately went after Rivet and everyone followed suit, including Patrick Kaleta and Brendan Witt, who primarily battled while laying on the ice in an exchange that left Witt bleeding after his head struck the playing surface.

A pair of fights occurred during Canadiens–Flyers in the evening: Steve Downie took on Maxim Lapierre and Joffrey Lupul participated in a rare bout against Guillaume Latendresse.

Alexei Cherepanov Collapses, Dies During Game

In a sad story, highly touted Rangers’ prospect Alexei Cherepanov collapsed on the bench during a KHL game yesterday and later died at a Russian hospital, presumably because of a heart attack.

The details:

Cherepanov was stricken during a game in Chekhov, a city just outside Moscow, and died later at a hospital. The Rangers confirmed his death, and Jay Grossman, Cherepanov’s North American agent, said he believed the cause was a heart ailment. Grossman and Rangers management said they did not know of any health problems.

…

On Monday evening, Omsk was playing a road game against Vityaz in Chekhov. The Russian newspaper Gazeta reported on its Web site that Cherepanov collapsed with three minutes left in the game and that his heart stopped. He was attended to by medical personnel at the game, then brought to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The crowd was apparently unaware of the seriousness of Cherepanov’s condition, and the game resumed after he was moved from the bench after collapsing.
