Afternoon Altercations
A variety of matchups took place this past weekend and a total of seven bouts occurred, but only of one of them didn’t take place in the afternoon.
Saturday was highlighted by a three-fight affair between the Oilers and Kings. Budding youngsters Sam Gagner and Jack Johnson came out of a first period scrum exchanging blows and they were followed by heavyweights Zack Stortini and Raitis Ivanans a little over a minute later. Ethan Moreau also dropped the gloves with Matt Greene in response to Moreau’s hit on Dustin Brown late in the game, but the two lost their balance and fell to the ice right away.
Arron Asham won a decision over Tim Jackman earlier in the day during Flyers–Islanders. Philadelphia was in action on Sunday as well and their first game against the Rangers since the season opener for both produced two scraps. Scott Hartnell went after Brandon Dubinsky after the latter took a jab at Martin Biron in the second period and Asham tangled with Paul Mara, who injured his shoulder during the fight, in the third. Chris Thorburn and Mike Brown grappled later on in Thrashers–Ducks to round out the weekend.
