Right off of the faceoff the two drop the gloves and square off near the blueline. They grab onto each other and exchange rights. Ivanans falls to the ice, taking Parros down with him, but the linesmen allow them to get back up to their feet. Ivanans throws two more rights and whips Parros to the ice. Parros gets back up and they exchange rights to the back of the head just before Parros goes down to his knees. Parros returns to his feet for a third time and throws five rights while they spin around. Ivanans gets in a right and they spin around with Parros throwing another right hand. The two then fall to the ice and the linesmen finally step in to break this one up.

A scrum develops in front of the Thrashers' net and out of it comes Battaglia and Coburn who have dropped the gloves and are grappling for position. They continue to wrestle around until they get up along the boards where Coburn gets in a right uppercut. Battaglia gets free and comes across with a right. Coburn comes back with a couple of body shots. Battaglia then throws two rights and Coburn fires off two uppercuts. Battaglia throws another right an attempts a locked-out uppercut just before the linesmen intervene and end the fight. Other Penalties: Coburn received a roughing.

McCarty is bumped off the puck in the corner and after the play moves away he spots Laperriere and the two drop the gloves. They tie up quickly and get into an awkward position. McCarty fans on a couple of short rights, and then switches hands, but never throws a left as they just can't straighten out. They eventually wrestle down to their knees, but get up before the linesmen can break it up. As they rise Lappy starts throwing rights, getting off a handful of them before they go down to their knees again and the linesmen come in.

Erskine is clearing the front of the Caps' net and as the puck moves away he seeks out Chris Simon. They drop the gloves and just start swinging, Erskine with the rights, Simon with the lefts. They each land a couple, and Simon pauses to regain his balance as Erskine throws a wild shot that becomes a body shot, and pauses for a quick moment while Simon starts throwing lefts again. Erskine goes for a big right that helps throw Simon off-balance. Simon goes to a knee and as Erskine is losing his balance, Simon helps bring him down to the ice and gets in a left as the linesmen come in.
