Wings Halfway to Another Cup

The Red Wings continued to be comfortable at home, and are now going to Pittsburgh up 2-0 in the series.  Maybe Marian Hossa made the right move after all.

Justin Abdelkader got another knuckleball past Marc-Andre Fleury. His insurance flutters have really helped the Wings flip to defense mode and lock down Sidney Crosby & co.  The Wings D has been the biggest factor in this series so far.

One Pen who’s putting points on the board is Evgeni Malkin. After the end of last night’s game, he’s also the series PIM leader. If Vegas was crazy enough to put odds out on him fighting Henrik Zetterberg, there might be a few bankrupt sportsbooks right now. A frustrated Malkin went after Zetterberg, who took a while to get a glove off.

Malkin picked up an instigator from the play.  NHL rule 47.22 calls for an automatic suspension any time a player receives an instigator within the last five minutes of a game, but will not be suspended.  This is completely expected.  The league has been pretty consistent about lifting the suspension for instances like this: close games, scorers on the ice, play seems non-premeditated.  For some reason there’s confusion about this, and the rule itself is awful, but this is how it’s worked since the rule has been added.

Game 3 is Tuesday night, 8pm eastern.

Red Wings are halfway to their 2nd consecutive Cup, but the biggest tragedy still is that Eric Godard won’t see one second of ice time and Aaron Downey is wallowing in Grand Rapids.  All the talk by Babcock at how much last year Downey meant to the Red Wings was a load of b-s.  Not even putting Downey on the teams roster this year was just the slap of all slaps to the face.  The man did see 4 games and had a goal and an assist.  Another tragedy in this rematch is Eric Godard.  Here is a guy who steps up and takes on all comers to protect the 2 little fellas.  Like Downey last year, not giving him one playoff game is the biggest punch to the face Godard has taken.  Hockey is the greatest game on Earth, but the teams need to stop with having the gamers go at it all year long, breaking noses, jaws and orbital bones and ending their careers with concussions only to spend the most important time of the season in the rafters.  Of course we will all watch the series but not seeing Aaron Downey do battle with Eric Godard is a Greek tragedy.  Come on all you fans of the gamers.  Where you at now?  Voices for our favorites.

I agree it’s a shame Goddard didn’t get to play in the previous series, but not this one.  The Wings aren’t going to hack anyone, they’re just too good.  The Wings could have maybe used Downey earlier too.  the thing is, Goddard protected Sid, etc. all year, a key team role, and should at least get some playoff ice time to motivate to play better next year.  Otherwise, please trade him to the Wild.  Imagine Eric G. and Boogie prowling the ice…The Ducks and Canucks would really be cowering.

Wonder if Fleury will pull another sieve-job tomorrow. Or if the anointed one will be blanked yet again. I’m kinda over the Overdog vs the other Overdog series. Is it wrong to want fall to be here already?
