The Rematch

The fight you were waiting for, the rematch between Eric Godard and Derek Boogaard.

Vote!

It’s really the first big rematch of the season, and it was pretty good scrap, you don’t always get that.

More to come later tonight…

Update 230am: The videos page has been updated with the Godard-Boogaard fight, along with Chris Clark-Scott Walker and Andrew Peters-Jody ShelleyJarkko Ruutu-Stephane Robidas should be added sometime this weekend (I’ll update here).  For those who like previews, all the vids have been Youtube’d.  Two are previewed on the vids page, and after the jump is a big hit that Dion Phaneuf threw on Boogaard.

Update Jan 28 340pm: Ruutu-Robidas has been added to the vids page, and is on Youtube as well.

Godard is a buddy of mine and he is having a hell of a year on the fight card.  The flames need him in their lineup.  Especially if he keeps on beating guys like boogard.  Nothing against boogard cause he is a great fighter but godard is a worm, and can land with accuracy.  Waits for the right time and uses it.  Godard won this fight hands down, Boogard got one in on him with the jersey over the head.  Eric man, keep it up, now just gotta make your golf game as good as your fighting.  haha.  Go Godard

thats 2 times now godard has had his way boogaard first time gives him a Concussion with some hard rights, then he gives him a big Facial laceration(big bloody ugly red bruse thing)with the left godard has to stay up with the big boys cuz he will fight any one and would most likle hurt the too(ask BOOgaard i bet he feels smaller now)iknow his iq dropped a little after the hits hes taken latly. dont worry about hemsky oiler fans the flames have been treating BooGaard real nice latlyGATTA LOVE FIGHTING!! go flames go

You gotta be insane to think Godard won that fight.  He gave him a little papercut from his jersey, that’s all.  75% of Godard’s hits were mere rubs.  Same with Boogaard.  However, if you think Godard getting the cornholio treatment with his jersey and then three or four free bashes to the head equals a win for him, so be it.

Yeah Godard won fight #1, but he definately got peppered this match.

Exactly what part of Godard being on the ice with his jersey pulled over his head taking shots from Boogaard equals a Godard win???

#7 - randy andersen from Michigan on Jan 27, 2007 at 11:27 AM

Godard didn’t knock Boogaard’s helmet off with a punch(as the video description suggests), he pulled it off with his left hand (watch closely). Boogaard victory.

I agree where is the Godard win in this one? Granted first fight Boogaard got waxed but this fight Boogaard gets Godard’s jersey over his head and a few taps at the end for good measure and Godard wins. You need to watch it again.

godard was beeter in this scrap. Win Godard

#10 - Doug F. from Atlanta, GA on Jan 27, 2007 at 01:35 PM

Looked like a close one to me. I’m not a fan of fighters hitting the other guy when they are down with their jersey over their head. It looked like Boogaard was desperate to make a good showing after the whipping Godard delt him in the first fight. It’s just a shame that his only quality shots were after Godard was down. Isn’t there some unwritten rule among the class enforcers that you stop punching when someone hits the ice? That was some nice jabbing by Godard while holding the jersey, eh?

#11 - sam from MINNESOTA !!! on Jan 27, 2007 at 01:41 PM

Are you joking me i was at the game ... you honestly think Godard won woah you guys must be diehart fans of Godard. Ill give ya he won the first one but the second umm no (Godard even had to leave the ice for a period) looks like my boogaard won his title back!!! Best fighter ever!

#12 - b. quinn from connecticut on Jan 27, 2007 at 01:54 PM

since when does recieving two punches on the ice with your jersey over your head mean you lost the fight.godsy who is a personel friend not only won the rematch but showed last year by pounding almost every heavyweight in the league that he is easily one of the top 5 tough guys in the show.way to go godsey!!

#13 - mike from Jersey on Jan 27, 2007 at 02:57 PM

it was a pretty even fight but for the people who are on boogaards meat (sam from minnesota)he got showed up in both fights so far, anybody could get good punches with the other guys jersey over his head, nice job to Godard on both fights.

#14 - mervin corbett from calgary on Jan 27, 2007 at 03:47 PM

it was godards fingernails that cut boogard thats all his hands down beatingby boogard will come before the season is over calgary sucks ,if they did not have kippersieve they would be seller dwellers.

I think I saw round one but was a little tipsy…

Round two was:

1) a good scrap

2) actually pretty close IMO

I am hoping and holding out for Round three…

boogaard would have to win his next 4 fights with godard to come back from the whipping he got during their first. the thing that drives me nuts(as an islanders fan) is that godard got smashed by colton orr twice in one game, then he puts on a flames jersey and manhandles boogaard. ridiculous. and boogaard isnt the toughest in the league. laraque by far is the number one. absolutely no one is tougher than him. boogaard couldnt even connect with a punch when they fought earlier this year. check the tape. no one knows the semantics of a hockey fight better than big georges

#17 - Cambec from Minneapolis on Jan 27, 2007 at 05:52 PM

Try to remember that Godard was Boogard’s first fight in the juniors (16 or 17 year old against Godard at 20).  If you want to know why Boogard was punching him at the end....it was because he was mad as hell.  He doesn’t like Godard.

If the lineman hadn’t stopped the fight, Boogard would have pulled Godard back up with the jersey over his head and destroyed him.  The guy who wins is the the guy on top and in control when the fight ends.  Godard had a couple of nice shot, but he lost control and was about to get his head punched in....

#18 - Arjai from Saint Paul on Jan 27, 2007 at 06:25 PM

I can understand all the Godard hype, he is a true tough guy.  However, in this latest version, 2.0(?), Godard lost.  He put up a good fight but forgot to tighten down his fight strap.  Isn’t that something he should know by now?

Anyways, the bad blood between these two has not gone away.  Hopefully Godard can keep his seat, or at least stay healthy and be called up four more times this year.

I know I’ll be watching on Feb. 28th, Wild @ Calgary....

“The guy who wins is the the guy on top and in control when the fight ends.”

You are kidding right?  That is how you judge who wins a fight?

#20 - leightoncrowley from STP on Jan 27, 2007 at 08:29 PM

the fight was more of a draw but godard did NOT come close to winning. boogey had the upperhand.  he aint afraid to go toe-to-toe with anyone.

go boogey

#21 - Rob from the same on Jan 28, 2007 at 12:55 AM

hey matty from philly

I like G. Laraque as well - especially after DS caught him miked up before a scrap with Iavanis(sp. ?) when GL wished him good luck before they dropped ‘em…

However - did you see the Shannahan - Brashear fight? I am not saying anything about who won this fight but I am just curious about what you think…

GL versus DB?

The first fight withrd was Boogys first back from the spained ankle he had from when Laqrue or whatever his name was dragged him down because he couldnt knock him down. derek was beaten and rusty and the first fight second one looks like Godard got tired and basically quit(be taking a knee or falling to the ice. Ask (I cant remember his name) if Boogy hits guys once there down, I’m talking about the guy he one punched and ko’d him on his feet. Peace…

#24 - Cambec from Minneapolis on Jan 28, 2007 at 01:34 AM

Yep Ogre, in this fight (neither showing dominance until the end) it is the guy in control and on top that wins.  Balance is a major part of fighting on ice and when a player is over powered they twist to the ice to cover.  Losing the balance part of a fight is negative.  Boogard overpowered Godard and got his jersey over his head.  Godard went to the ice because he lost his balance and was at that time in trouble.  Fedoruk lost his balance and had his cheekbone broken when he stayed up.  You tell me what Godard was thinking when he twisted to the ice and covered his head.  He certainly wasn’t thinking “now I’ve got Boogard right where I want him.”
