Souray Drops Ohlund for Hit on Cole

Sheldon Souray didn’t care for the hit Mattias Ohlund put on Erik Cole, and immediately let him know it.  After they dropped the gloves Ohlund threw a couple of shots, but Souray needed just one right to drop Ohlund to the ice.  The check on Cole, while legal, obviously wasn’t thought of as clean by Souray.  It was the only fight out of the two games played last night.

Two games?

Jarkko Ruutu received a two-game suspension for biting Andrew Peters.  Two games.  This was the second time this season Ruutu has been suspended.  He was suspended for two games in November for elbowing Maxim Lapierre.

Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News had the same thought I did: Ruutu, a repeat offender with the reputation as an agitator, was suspended two games for biting a player.  Sean Avery was suspended six for saying the wrong things to a media audience.  I suppose three bites equals poor choice of words in the NHL.

Mike V torn

I’ve received a lot of feedback about the tragedy of Don Sanderson, especially since I was interviewed by Puck Daddy yesterday.

Much of the feedback is similar to the comments on this blog and on Yahoo!‘s, that although tragic, changes aren’t needed.

However, some feedback has been mixed, or simply torn between not wanting to see another player hurt, and love for the physical side of the game.

Mike V’s latest blog post on the Ducks website is a good example of old school fan struck hard by Mr. Sanderson’s death, and wondering how much of the fight game he needs.

I saw the game, and it was very obvious that Peter’s was the “Bitee”.  So in his protest to the officials, Peter’s get’s called for a two minute penalty, and Jaws Ruuttuu and his team get to be on the power play.  Something wrong with this picture.

IF the NHL wants to send a clear message about “biting” and the fact that it won’t tolerate it, then they need to come down really hard on this one.  Make it a 20 game suspension!

I hope Peters knocks out his teeth the next time the 2 play. Jarkko is a punk, always been a punk. Knock his teeth out and his bite wont hurt next time.

Ohlunds had it coming, and finally he got it. That was about it for the Oilers. A snoozer of a game.

On Rutuu….  Two games is a joke. I think every fan has had enough of the Avery/Rutuu garbage. The bottom line is we don’t need them. When oh when will the NHL Elite make a consistant and zero tolerence policy for garbage like this. 10 games and he might think about it, but that being said we are talking about someone who has no sense of right and wrong, so how much can you say that will actually mean something to Rutuu. Fine the Senators, fine Rutuu, and have the money go to the referee’s pension, then suspend him for 10 games. That might get the ball rolling on stopping this garbage.

I think Ruutu should bite Souray for “sticking up” for someone who got caught with their head down. Then Avery should knock Ruutu’s teeth out and we’ll call it even. After this, Ohlund and Cole should just get a room and get it over with. This solves all aforementioned disciplinary issues.

Meh… Ohlund’s hit was a good one but Souray’s response is becoming typical these days: clean hit or not, the guy throwing the body has to pay. I don’t like it- hitting is a part of the game… just like fighting. wink

Rutuu is Finnish. Peters should be glad he didn’t stick a knife in him.

I watched the Canuck/Oil game and there were several questionable hits from behind prior to Ohlunds clean hit on Cole. Souray fought Ohlund not just for the hit on Cole but the previous Mitchell on Gilbert hit. Souray had enough and found an opportunity.
