Rangers-Flyers Yardsale

All hell broke loose in the second period of today’s Rangers-Flyers game after Steve Downie grabbed Fedor Tyutin in response for an earlier hit along the boards. Video is here and below.

The collison gave linesman Pat Dapuzzo a bad facial laceration and broken jaw after Downie’s skate inadverently struck Dapuzzo in the face. CSN Philadelphia reports Dapuzzo needed approximately 60 stitches to close the cut.

Tyutin shoved Downie to the ice and players started pairing up. Downie found Tyutin and settled the score by way of a fight. Colton Orr got the better of fellow heavyweight Riley Cote in a toe-to-toe scrap.

While Jim Dowd and Ryan Hollweg both received fighting majors, both players were seen standing off to the side during the brawl. Jim Vandermeer and Blair Betts wrestled around before falling to the ice and should have been handed those majors instead. Jason Smith and Daniel Girardi had a hold of each other as well but nothing came of it.

After a near bout with Sean Avery was prevented by the officials, Mike Richards took on Brandon Dubinsky as time expired in the second (video here).

In related game news, Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren announced after the game that defenseman Braydon Coburn was rushed to a local hospital during the game and was undergoing emergency surgery on one of his legs.

You gotta love Rangers fans, always right in the thick of things from their parents basement.

I am so sick of hearing about the visor BS, its part of the fight to get the damn helmet off of the other player (it always has been, visor or not).  Quit bitching about it, half of the fights happen in the spur of the moment do you honestly think the guys are thinking about taking their helmets off before throwing? You would know the answer if you ever got off your sorry ass and actually played the game (sorry, Playstation doesn’t count)

Iginla wears one, it doesn’t always come off, are you bitching about that too?

I do play the game, since before playstation was around, and if you can tell me its OK that one man throwing punches at another mans face while he is wearing plastic in front of his own you have a lack of respect for more then just the game. I’m not knocking the players for wearing a visor, that jab was at the Philly fans who want to make Richards & Downey the poster boys for the next generation of Philly toughness. They are both good players and I would take them on NYR in a heartbeat, but lets not be so quick to pat them on the back every time they get into a scrap, especially against Dubi & Tyutin, both of who will never be considered NHL tough!

Both Downie and Richards are good all around players, not enforces and certainly not considered to be. They ARE considered to be tough and willing to drop the gloves. It would be a different story if they were enforces and wearing a visor.

Dubi ran his mouth and got in Richards face trying to stand up for his team (consistently does this), he challenged Richards - why would Richards back down from it? Whenever Richards lines up with another guy in set fight he tosses his helmet. Otherwise when it just happens, can you really blame him or any other player who wears a visor for not taking the time to remove the helmet? (that’s 3 seconds of time - sometimes its all you’ve got to get going and throwing). Besides the players know who is willing to throw, I doubt Dubi was surprised by Richards willingness.

If you line up and its a set fight and you don’t shed the visor, that’s one thing. But honestly, having been there enough times to know, when a scrap or fight breaks out spontaneously, no one is thinking about taking the helmet (visor or not) off, there’s no time to.

thats b.s. at the junior level u have to take your helmet off to drop the gloves or your given a misconduct the nhl should implement the same system to keep from cheapening the greatest aspect of our sport and the ability to police each other on the ice not like the other sports.furthermore i love seeing players with the shield, its safer for them but man up wen you drop the gloves and lose the helmet and shield!

Why doesnt this site ever play the philly feed, the announcers are always wayyyyy more excited for the fights than their counterparts.

It’s normally whatever feed they’re carrying on Center Ice, so there’s no option.  For any NY area team, I get the local feed and CI is blacked out.
