Laraque: “I Don’t Want to Be Traded”

Yesterday there was a lot of talk about Georges Laraque expecting to be traded from the Canadiens.  Laraque was asked if he was frustrated about not playing the last couple of games for the Canadiens.  He said he was and there were reports that he said he wouldn’t have signed with Montreal last summer if he knew he wasn’t going to be a regular in the lineup.

He confirmed with us that he did not ask for a trade, and added that he won’t.

I asked Laraque hypothetically where he’d want to go if he was traded.  His reply was “nowhere, I would retire.”

Knowing Big George’s love for the game, I have my doubts about that, but I do think it shows his frustration, not just with his lack of playing, but with the media attention about what he says is a misinterpretation of what he originally said.

RDS is reporting that Laraque is saying not only does he not want to be traded, but that he won’t lift a no-trade clause in his contact.

Je ne veux pas être échangé, a-t-il précisé. J’ai une clause de non-échange et je n’ai pas l’intention de la lever. Je veux jouer ici, je veux finir ma carrière ici.

Translated: I do not want to be traded, he said. I have a no-trade clause and I do not intend to lift it. I want to play here, I want to finish my career here.

Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau does not seem thrilled about the timing of Laraque’s comments, as the Habs have won their last two games.

They dont need him, they need a healthy policeman who loves his job,not one that does it because he has too.Their are alot of young fighters in the minors able to skate a shift with out pulling a groin.in edmonton he was 280 he had a problem with the coach their, now he,s healthy once a month and wants to play.I never saw him as a great fighter just bigger then the ones during his early years,he looked like a body builder who was ok at fighting not someone who loved it.Did montreal over pay,you bet.Do they wish they could dump his salary, you bet.Does goerge look in game shape, nope. And then the dumb penalties lately have made him look out of step with the game. But he will never be in the top heavyweights of all time list. For that you need heart. How many heavies take steroids?

how does he have a no trade clause in his contract.  I thought that was reserved for franchise players.  not hasbins….

he takes up a roster spot. he wont dress in a playoff game. how many teams has he played for? his usefullness as a player does’nt exist anymore. to bad because he seems like a good guy off the ice just by listening to him speak. at this stage of his career he should have a better skill level. seems he never got that chance on a consistant basis.

I believe he had his chance in edmonton,he had that great playoff against dallas, but that work ethic never continued, then the following year he comes to camp weighing 280lbs.Mac gave him every oppurtunity to slim down so he could play more shifts,he never did so he was gone.i think he had the stamina of a body builder not a hockey player.Look at the job thorton is doing in boston, shelly in san jose, they protect the team at a 3rd the price and play injured.i remember the forearm shiver bgl put on simon while simon was on the ice,it cut simon open, yet he talks of a code.

BGL represents the Habs obsession with signing any dude with a French name.

Laraque has always been one of the better skilled fighters.  Look at his overall career stats.  The man can score when he has enough playing time.  He got tons of ice time in Pittsburgh where he should have definitely stayed.  Has Montreal ever been fans of the gamers?  At least in the past 2 decades?  They had Downey for a year and a half.  They had Darren Langdon for maybe a year.  They had Ivanans for what a game?  Montreal is Canada’s version of the Red Wings.  Laraque needs to take a trade anywhere out of Montreal will be better for him.

I hated to see him go from pittsburgh would love to see him back here but thats pretty much out of the question.

hope he go’s somewhere where he gets alot more playing time.  he deffinently has a unique skill and i think the habs are losing out by not using him more.

I don’t see how the Habs could even think about trading BGL.  They are total pushovers without him, and their top minor leager, Henry, doesn’t impress.  So what if guys like BGL and Boogie don’t score, their value is in keeping the opponents off their skill/finess players.  As a Wild fan, I love how the team always has a top heavy around for that purpose, and how the agitators like Laperier scamper away like rats when the sherrif is in.  Lemaire and Risebrough know that, and it’s amazing how the guys running the Habs put such soft teams out there.

Geoge Laraque come to the Flyers!!! The guy we have can’t fight. He will take on all comers. He takes a beating well ask Donald Brashear.

Eric Godard has been a much better enforcer for the Pens than BGL was. Laraque fought when “he” felt like it, not always when it was needed.

Godard takes care of business. And he does it effectively. The Pens also have a young Paul Bissonette in the minors. Biznasty has already had some spirited bouts in just a few NHL games.

“upyours from Pa” is 100 % correct.  Godard has been a blessing here and does double the work at a fraction of the price.  Laraque is just lazy - period.  The only reason he got so much playing time here is because like the Habs organization, Michel Therrien will play anyone with a French name over people with more talent.  GM’s and fans get fooled into wanting him because of his fighting ability until he spends a few games with them and they see that he just wants to collect a paycheck.

The very rugged and (when needed) pugilistic George Laraque would be a great addition for the Chicago Blackhawks. He and Brashear are still the top 2 fighters in the NHL.  Brashear is a better player and more durable. He’s the ideal enforcer.

He is a stiff. All you folks talking about his “skill” level make me laugh. All the goon can do is drop em and frankly I dont think he is that great a fighter. He clutches and grabs and is very strong but head to head I dont think he is all that.

I would much rather a guy like Thornton for the Bruins who can and will scrap with anyone but can also play a descent checking game. George cannot play that game in the least. he runs at ppl and acts like a bully.

To play in this league you gotta be able to play as well as be tough. He cant so I hope he stays in Montreal where all the wannabes live.

laraque had too much playing time in pittsburgh for how bad he was… he really had no skill except for dropping gloves… he couldnt skate except when he had to fight. im glad we picked up godard. godard is a much better enforcer and can actually play the game.

George laraque is the best. although it is to bad he doesn’t fight as much as he should.hes getting paid 3 million for his ability of fighting but he doesn’t show it.when he played for Edmonton and Pittsburgh he fought a lot more than he does now.i mean he is never going to be a sniper or anything.i understand why he is not happy about not getting a lot of ice time because he can play hockey but montreal just wants him to fight and he is not doing what he is paid of doing.so if montreal trades him it is probably because he is not doing his job wich is fighting.
