Derek Boogaard’s Big Return

Last night wasn’t Derek Boogaard‘s first game this season, but it was his first with a fight.  Boogaard accepted an offer to go from David Koci, who looked like he realized what a mess he was in a few seconds too late.  The Avalanche list Koci at 6’6” and 238 lbs.  Even if they’re being generous with an inch, he looked quite small compared to the monstrous Boogaard. It was a long layoff in the fistic department for Boogaard as he hadn’t dropped the gloves since January.  Apparently that was no issue as Boogaard easily handled the tough Czech.

There were a few other good bouts last night.  Krys Barch and George Parros went back and forth in AnaheimFrancis Wathier played in his first NHL game and got into his first fight, against Mike BrownScott Walker and Brendan Witt had a good go mid-way through the first period of the Islanders first win of the season (a shootout).

David Koci was definetly running for his life in his go with Derek Boogaard.  Koci is still a tough SOB.  Remember here is a guy who 2 years ago broke his nose in a fight only to fight like 2 games later and have it busted open again.  Give Krys Barch credit for taking it to Pennsylvania’s finest.  George Parros had a beautiful cut when their throwdown was over.

Koci is tough but Boogarrd is a destroyer, although he won’t have an easy time going up against Belak again. Parros has horrible balance, but I gots lots of respect for him. Barch is a slugger.

Boogie looks like he’s intent on regaining his place in the top 5, or higher.  Koci is a good warm-up for Belak, Brash and BGL.

To the guys who ragged that Boogie can’t score goals, etc.  Do ya get that he’s on the team for other reasons…like to protect the scorers???  Duh.  If you’re going to have an enforcer, might as well have one of the most intimidating.  As a Wild fan, I’d just like to see him get more ice time and clean monster hits on some of the Pfanhoefs, who supposedly are considered good players, while being dirty as *&^%.

Parros looks increasingly like Roy looked last year…washed up.  At least with his Princeton education he could maybe find a job.

rex from MN:
It would help, though, if he could actually skate too. Brash can skate, BGL can skate. Hell, those guys score the occasional goal and get the occasional assist. Booger is the consummate plug. I get that he’s there to protect the goal scorers. But, do you remember Bobby Orr? The guy could mash noses and rack up points. He’s got a minuscule shelf life as an NHLer unless he brings at least a little something else to the table.
But I’m with you on the “clean monster hits on some of the Pfanhoefs” part. DP needs to be squashed like a bug.

Orr? You want to compare Boogy to Orr to try to show that Boogy can’t skate?

Fail.

Orr makes folks with catchy nicknames who are known for there skating ability look like mini mites.

He’ll be in Minny for a long time.

I’m having a hard time getting my head around comparing Bobby Orr to Boogie in the same sentence…

“To the guys who ragged that Boogie can’t score goals, etc.” Read that last sentence again.
I’m just saying there are/were players who can do both, very well. Granted, I used an extreme example.
But I also used Brashear and Laraque.
