Boogaard Fight Camp Still Debated

The Boogaards fight camp, which made news a month ago when it was announced they were going to teach kids how to fight on skates, is still getting ink.

CTV adds to the chatter about the camp with an article accompanied by a few videos.

It has the normal “it’s defensive” vs “it’s thuggery” quotes, plus a little something from the Great One:

“If they’re there teaching kids at the ages of 12, 13, 14 to defend themselves, that’s fine,” said Wayne Gretzky. “I took boxing classes when I was 10. It didn’t pay off for me.”

Sarah Schorno of The Huffington Post chimes in with a positive outlook:

The purpose of the camp is to teach the attendees, who range in age from 12 to 18, to learn how to effectively handle the inevitable on-ice fight. If the camp stays true to its cause, which is self defense, then it’s not entirely a bad idea.

Even on this site, where fighting is clearly not frowned upon, there was debate on whether or not the Boogaards should be teaching kids the ins and outs of on-ice fisticuffs.  One thing that is clear is that the controversy surrounding it generated enough publicity for them to easily fill-up next year’s camp.

There is nothing wrong with this camp.  Most people don’t realize that if you kick ass on ice, defending yourself on solid ground will be easy.  These kids are being taught self defense.  If you think this camp should be canceled then the karate and martial arts camps should be canceled too.  All this camp is is a self defense camp meant for hockey.

i’ve been hearing about this camp for quite a while now.  one thing many of the nay-sayers are over looking, is the skill it takes to be a good fighter on the ice.  you can’t just go in swinging around wildly like you can on solid ground, do it on the ice and you better expect to get yourself hurt.  Many of the people who don’t like the idea have probably never played legit competitive hockey where fighting exist.  You need to know how to defend yourself as much as you need to know how to throw a good punch.  If a kid going into junior and has never fought before, i think it is a great idea to learn how to fight on the ice, many times in try-outs, coaches will pin guys against each other in a fight to see how they handle themselves, if you’ve never fought before and/or don’t have any idea what you’re doing, you’re gonna get tuned.

Great camp, wish they had one when I was a kid just for the fun!
Maybe I can apply to be an instructor.

Go ahead let kids learn how to fight. i played hockey from kindergarten all the way to my senior year in high school, i have gotten in scraps on the ice and the first few sucked because i didnt know how to fight on the rink. let the Boogaards open the   camp fighting is a part of hockey

What happened to having to know how to play hockey?!  So should all the enforcers focus more on boxing camps than on skating skills and puck handling.  I’m all for a good fight, but if I wanted to see boxing I’d go ringside to a fight.  I want HOCKEY players who can fight…..not goons who can fight and barely stand on skates

Hmmmm, thats funny that Mr. Boogaard is holding a camp like this, since, after all he has had his ticket punched a few times with a non-favorable outcome. He should consider taking lessons himself and leave the on-ice training to, let’s say Dave Semenko, Stan Jonathan and those who can really teach someone on the art of fisticuffs on ice….

Hey Dennis from Calgary,

I don’t think it’s funny that the boogy-man is opening up a camp like this.  I think it’s long overdue.  By the way, name one NHL fighter who has never had his bell rung once or twice.
I think this camp will help produce more “hockey players who can fight” just like Nicole from Texas said.  I’d love to see more guys in the league like Jarome Iginla, wouldn’t you?
