A Rematch It Is

The Penguins completed a sweep of the Hurricanes last night, and the Red Wings knocked off the Blackhawks tonight to finish the series in five.  So after many game sevens the rounds before, the Conference Finals went quickly and now we’re left with a rematch of the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals.  We’ll have one of our previews in the upcoming days.

Since 92-93 there have been only four Wings-Pens fights*:
Jay Caufield vs Bob Probert Nov 13, 1992
Marty McSorley vs Bob Probert from Feb 4, 1994
Darren McCarty vs Kelly Buchberger Oct 18, 2003
Brad Norton vs Andre Roy Oct 7, 2006

In case you only watch one, the McSorley-Probert fight is one of the best of all-time, easy.

* there were a couple of more fights during preseason

Steroids, you say

If you’ve never watched football, or the Olympics, or baseball, or cycling, or basically any sport or athletic competition at a serious level, let me break some news to you: some athletes use steroids.  Shocking, I know.

A couple in Florida was arrested for selling steroids.  They claim they sold them to many pro athletes, and specifically named the Nats and Caps.

The NHL and the Capitals quickly released statements.  The quick and easy version of them: “Steroids?  Nah.”  Donald Brashear said he knew of nothing to Washington radio station WJFK.

So now the “there are steroids in hockey, too” articles are coming out, and I’m sure there will be a new round of suspicions, just as there was four years ago during the NHL lockout.

The tough guys will be called out, due to the misconception that steroids are just for making you big and strong, but that’s simply not true.  While Manny Ramirez and other sluggers may get the biggest steroids-related baseball headlines, a look at MLB’s suspension list (or the minor league suspension list), lets you know that this isn’t a power thing, but that all types (and sizes) of players are possible users.  It’s just the harsh reality of it.  Some fans care, some don’t.  Personally, I happen to like a level playing field.

Thanks for the quickie update VF. And any reason to watch that epic fight is always a good thing.

Much appreciated.

Let’s see this rematch of last year, but the biggest tragedy is that Eric Godard won’t see one second of ice time and Aaron Downey is wallowing in Grand Rapids.  All the talk by Babcock at how much last year Downey meant to the Red Wings was a load of b-s.  Not even putting Downey on the teams roster this year was just the slap of all slaps to the face.  The man did see 4 games and had a goal and an assist.  Another tragedy in this rematch is Eric Godard.  Here is a guy who steps up and takes on all comers to protect the 2 little fellas.  Like Downey last year, not giving him one playoff game is the biggest punch to the face Godard has taken.  Hockey is the greatest game on Earth, but the teams need to stop with having the gamers go at it all year long, breaking noses and orbital bones and ending their careers with concussions only to spend the most important time of the season in the rafters.  Of course we will all watch the series but not seeing Aaron Downey do battle with Eric Godard is a Greek tragedy.  Come on all you fans of the gamers.  Where you at now?  Voices for our favorites.

Forget Godard. Don’t get me wrong he’s a great fighter and in my opinion one of the top 3 in the league, but we want the cup this year and Godard just can’t help us as much as some of the other guys who are riding the pine. For example, Pascal Dupuis or Peter Sykora. These guys have been great playoff performers in the past but right now the Pens are winning. Why would you dress Godard over guys like this. Again, no offense to Godard, he’s an awesome tough guy but the cup is what is important at this time of year. After the Pens eliminate thuggish teams like Philly why do you need a guy like Godard? Other than the pure entertainment of it all.

I agree with Randy, I love Godard but he doesn’t have the speed needed to win the cup.  I was hoping to see him in game 4 against Carolina, I thought it would have sent a message saying hey, you mess with us we’ll send in the reinforcement but oh well, Pens won, on to Detroit.  Sykora and Dupiss though have done nothing, a combined 1 point and they both were given opportunities with Malkin and Crosby, if they can’t get you points, no one else in this league can.  Hail Satan! lol Let’s go Pens!

I love the Pens and Bruins and think the Wings are way too Euro to be much fun to watch.  That said, Pitt needs to tweak the roster more, especially if Sykora and Dupuis can’t score any more.  Guerin seems to be the only older guy that helps, and that’s due to character.  Trade those guys for one younger, exciting scorer or power forward who balance the load better.  Or at least neutralize some of the Wings talent.
