A Big Two Minutes

The longest fight of the night belonged to Alexei Semenov and Andre Roy.  The two had matching roughings called against them, hopped out of the box, and dropped the gloves shortly after Semenov had a quick shot on goal.  Punches were thrown, it didn’t look too different from most fights… but somehow roughings were called again.

It’s common that someone will write to me, asking me why majors were called after two players shed the gloves, never throw a real punch and somehow are given fighting majors.  It’s rare I hear the opposite, but last night provided just that.

Video of the altercation is after the jump.

There were two other fights (that were called fights) last night, a bit light considering there were 11 games played.

I think the “Are you kidding me” comment by the announcers sum it up. That was a pretty decent scrap.

I watched this game and 2 minutes for roughing was the strangest call i have ever seen ever.

judaddy, I agree. I’ve seen a lot of hockey in my time and can’t for the life of me figure out why 5 minute majors weren’t handed out. The video clip carried commentary by the Calgary announcers. I was listening to the Sharks announcers and they were even more incredulous over the assessment of 2-minute minors.

The refs owe them both 3 hard-earned PIMs.

What were they thinking?

When those people write you, do you ignore them like you ignore my emails? Asshole.

I’ve never received an email from you, but I can’t say I’m sad about that.

Singer, you’re probably 50 for 50 with my annoying emails smile

I honestly don’t understand the ref’s thinking on this one.  I used to chuckle in the 80’s when a ref would give guys two minutes each for delay of game instead of roughing as a slap in the face but this was clearly a fight.  Maybe not a great one but, still worthy of five minutes each.  WAIT A MINUTE!!!  I’ve changed my mind.  I actually hope this becomes a trend in the NHL.  This way the meathead pacifists that don’t understand the game will shut their mouths because technically, fighting will no longer be a part of hockey.  Upon further review, a brilliant call by the referee.  I applaud you.

I’m pretty sure I know what the refs were thinking.  This was a prearranged thing after the two guys got 2 minutes earlier for an abortive fight.

The refs were thinking “I’m not giving you guys the satisfaction of a 5 minute penalty”.  I bet if they did it again they’d get two minutes even if it was a really good fight.

Not saying it’s right, just saying…

I bet about a 1/3 of the fights in the NHL this season have had less action than this bout between Roy and Semenov and earned majors. Very strange. I’ve never seen anything like it.

I think Andrew from Toronto is just having a hard time coping with the (Please) Lea[v]es sucking so incredibly, incredibly hard.
Keep up the nice work, David. I love this site.
