While Jarkko Ruutu may not have mounted much offense in his fight last night against Milan Lucic, his loyal fans from Finland still have his back.
Hei Suomi! Jää vähäksi aikaa , Nauti Sivustosta.
This season has been Ruutu’s busiest in terms of dropping the gloves post-lockout. He’s been pretty entertaining while doing it too, as fans who have seen his scraps against Steve Downie and Darcy Tucker will attest.
Speaking of Downie, he and Mike Fisher danced during a scrum in Flyers-Senators. Recent rookie call-ups Ryan Callahan and Tim Conboy went in Rangers-Hurricanes.
A pair of midwest middleweight scraps in Blackhawks-Stars rounded out the night. Brent Seabrook and Steve Ott exchanged blows in an impromptu scrap in the third period. Adam Burish and Brendan Morrow locked horns half a minute later.

It was a rough third period in Buffalo‘s big win over Nashville last night. Although the scrums continued until the end of the game, the fighting got done early. Andrew Peters and Darcy Hordichuk dropped the gloves a few minutes into the period. Adam Mair and Jordin Tootoo went at it right off of the ensuing faceoff seconds later.
Jared Boll continues to stretch his lead in the total fighting majors race. The popular rookie danced with Doug Murray in last night’s only other scrap.
Looking for some games to follow tonight? There are a few intriguing matchups on tap.
The Rangers and Hurricanes will meet in Carolina for the first time since their fight-filled game in January. Cam Janssen will likely make his debut in a Blues uniform tonight as St. Louis hosts the Coyotes.
Assuming that his oft-injured shoulder is ready to go, Brian McGrattan will have a chance to make up for his last performance against Riley Cote when the Senators and Flyers meet in a game that always seem to have eyes ever since their infamous brawl, of which the four-year anniversary will come next week.

Just a couple of weeks after the Fighting Sioux were dropping the gloves with the Golden Gophers, things got hostile again, this time against the Denver Pioneers.
From the 16th, things started in the second when J.P. Testwuide and Kyle Radke dropped the gloves, but picked up roughing minors.
Slashing minors and 10-minute misconducts were also given to each player, but both stayed in their respected penalty box throughout the period.
At the end of the second, things got friendly again.
Radke and Brandon Vossberg were given fighting penalties and were tossed (automatic in NCAA hockey). Also tacked on to fighting penalties are 1-game suspensions.
That wasn’t the end of it though. One-game suspensions were handed out to Testwuide and Radke for their earlier scuffle, despite fighting penalties not being called. Denver coach George Gwozdecky took no issue with the additional suspensions.
Jesse Boulerice played his first game last night since being suspended for 25 games for crosschecking Ryan Kesler in the face in early October.
It took just one shift for Boulerice to find Andrew Peters. The two had a good scrap, with Peters pumping up the crowd afterwards.
Boulerice wasn’t completely out of practice. After waiting to play in the AHL, Boulerice has been wearing a Phantoms jersey, dropping the gloves nine times for the club.
The Flyers beat the Sabres in dramatic fashion. After going down 3-0 in the first, the Flyers came back to tie the game in the third, then went on to win in a shootout.

Timeline of the day after the jump.
Donald Brashear not only took on one but both Brookbank brothers in separate fights this weekend. After dancing with Wade in Saturday’s heavyweight attraction, the Donald dropped the gloves with Sheldon during the first period of yesterday’s Devils-Caps game. The two bouts marked the first time Brashear had fought in nearly two months.
An unusually busy Sunday for fights saw a near brawl erupt between the Blackhawks and Ducks after Todd Bertuzzi ran into Patrick Lalime. The two exchanged some gloved punches before everyone else came barreling in. James Wisniewski and Corey Perry received the only fighting majors out of the bunch. Adam Burish took on Brian Sutherby earlier in the game.
Two fights in two periods in Manhattan last night: Gregory Campbell and Brandon Dubinsky went in the first; Tanner Glass and Ryan Hollweg had a go in the second.
An entertaining scrap between Ian Laperriere and Mathieu Roy rounded out the night.
Deadline Destination
For the third consecutive year, hockeyfights.com will be covering the NHL’s trade deadline, providing ongoing coverage throughout the course of the day. As always, we’ll try to make tomorrow as easy to follow as possible.
This day last season was a busy one and it’s pretty safe to assume that this time around won’t be any different.

Jody Shelley and Riley Cote went the distance in Thursday’s main heavyweight attraction. The fight was Shelley’s second as a member of the Sharks.
Cote had a chance to close the distance on Jared Boll‘s league-lead when it comes to fighting majors, but Boll ended up dropping the gloves with Mike Commodore in last night’s Jackets-Senators game.
Maxim Lapierre participated in his first NHL scrap when he locked horns with Maxime Talbot right off of a faceoff during Pittsburgh‘s 5-4 win over Montreal.
A pair of scraps in Bruins-Panthers: rugged defensive specialists Jeremy Reich and Steve Montador danced early in the first period with Mark Stuart and Gregory Campbell having a go minutes later.
Two Western Conference bouts rounded out the night. Jeff Cowan traded bombs with Shea Weber and veterans Bryce Salvador and Scott Thornton went as well.
Simon gets cold reception
Chris Simon returned last night, after a 30-game ban from the NHL. The fans at Nassau Coliseum didn’t throw him a welcome back party:
Simon was booed by a segment of the crowd when he took his first couple of shifts in the first period, and there was no discernible applause to counter that negative reaction.

So many since the last listing, we’ve put them, along with some audio and article links after the jump.
It was a busy weekend, mostly due to Edmonton-Vancouver, but there was also action elsewhere.
As I’m still putting together the Oilers-Canucks clips, we’ll do a quick rundown of some other highlights:
* Garnet Exelby‘s team took only 10 shots against the Islanders, so Ex decided to pop Blake Comeau.
* Arron Asham dropped the gloves twice.
* Barret Jackman jostled with Dan Fritsche, so Fritsche slid his visor down and bloodied Jackman.
* Steve Begin took out Denis Tolpeko, giving him a concussion, and Flyers captain Jason Smith wasted no time taking on Begin.
* The Flames and Ducks are always willing when facing each other, with two fights from each game played this season. The meet again on Feb 29.
* There was a fight in a Detroit-Colorado game for the first time since Mar 25, 2004. Rumor is ESPN is very interested in the NHL again and there will be 24 Wings-Avs games on the schedule.
* Daniel Carcillo opened up Raitis Ivanans right before being dropped.
Numbers game
One thing that happened this weekend: there have now been more fights this season than there were in all of 2005-06, the first post-lockout season. It won’t be long before last season’s number is surpassed as well.
The upswing this season is due to a number of factors. Two of the most obvious reasons:
* The Ducks winning ways have many teams emulating them.
* Player movement, while still as busy as ever, isn’t what it was from pre to post-lockout, so rivalries are becoming rivalries again.
However, an increase in fighting, doesn’t equal seeing a fight when watching an NHL game. Less than 40% of NHL games have a fighting major penalty called.
George Parros is now tied for the league lead in fighting majors with Jared Boll. They each have 19. Parros led the NHL in FMs last season with 18.

So a big weekend and no updates yet, let me explain: I moved yesterday, and while the move went as well as a move could go, the cable situation was/is lacking. That doesn’t mean a complete lack of videos, I was able to get a couple of things here and there, and thanks to a couple of friends, I’ll be able to fill in at least a few things within the next couple of days. Expect a log update and the first few vids later Monday.
Friday produced a total of three fights.
Ever-improving, part-time heavyweight Mike Rupp put in a solid performance against Thrashers enforcer Eric Boulton last night. While Rupp might not be finding the net at the same rate he did last season, he’s still managed to find a niche as a high energy player with the capability of taking on the bigger names for the Devils while Cam Janssen continues on the road back from shoulder surgery.
A pair of scraps in the Stars‘ 4-2 win over the Ducks last night. Corey Perry gave Steve Ott a little slash after being sent into the boards early on in the first period. Ott took exception, dropped his gloves, and grabbed Perry but Chris Kunitz came barreling in after Ott in defense of his teammate
Travis Moen and Krys Barch had themselves a go after Moen got into it with Dallas point leader Mike Riberio.

The Canucks continued their fighting ways through Valentine’s Day. The team has fought in 7 of the last 8 games, adding 15 fighting majors to their season total, currently sitting at 42 (4th in the NHL). Four of those games have gone to a shootout and only one was settled by more than one goal (a 6-2 loss to the Avs).
There were two scraps in last night’s game against the Wild. Nathan McIver had a good bout with Aaron Voros early in the first period. In the second, Alex Burrows took exception to a hit Brian Rolston put on Willie Mitchell. Rolston got Mitchell hard from behind, no call was made, and Burrows wasn’t giving Rolston any option. It was Rolston’s first major since 1994-95 when he had a fight with Ken Klee. Klee picked up the instigator in that one, something the Star Tribune also noted.
Minnesota won the game, 5-4 in the shootout. The Wild sit atop the Northwest division, the Canucks are one point out of a playoff spot.
