There were twelve fights in the NHL last night. For those who don’t visit here regularly: that’s a lot.
I’m not sure if it’s because it’s almost six in the morning (on the late side, not the early kind), but this is all that comes to mind. Anyone who grew up in the 70s and above, watches too much PBS, has kids and/or has done shrooms should recognize it.
Either John or I will update this post a little more tomorrow with some more reads and any other tidbits we feel fits in.
McCarty Comeback
Not really a “comeback”, as he played last season, Darren McCarty should be back on the ice soon, starting in the IHL and hoping to work his way back to the NHL.
Roberts refuses stretcher
From the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:
Georges Laraque insists there is an unwritten rule among NHL players to avoid leaving the ice via a stretcher no matter the severity of an injury.
A broken left leg, he conceded, would provide a good excuse.
Not for the Penguins’ ageless tough guy, Gary Roberts.

Darren McCarty is going to attempt to get back into the NHL through the IHL.
Brendan Savage of The Flint Journal is reporting that McCarty is close to signing with the Flint Generals (Flint Generals team page).
The plan is for him to spend between two and four weeks with the Generals in order to get back into game shape. Then, he hopes to eventually land a job with an NHL club, either after his stint in Flint is over or following a stop in the American Hockey League.
For those who aren’t aware, Flint is in Michigan, and a little over an hour drive away from Detroit, where McCarty played 11 seasons with the Red Wings.
Donald Brashear and Georges Laraque fought last night, the fifth time these two have gone in their NHL careers.
Their fight in October was a great one, and was voted as such. Last night’s bout, only three minutes into the game, probably won’t get as warm a reception, but it did seem to spark Brash who scored later in the first period and racked up four hits, the most on the Caps.

Colton Orr crushed Matt Cullen in the second period of last night’s Canes at Rangers game. Mike Commodore immediately dropped the gloves with Orr after the hit.
Cullen did not return to the game. Luke DeCock of The News & Observer reports that Cullen has a broken nose, and possible concussion.
Orr received an interference major and game misconduct to go along with the fighting major. While the penalty doesn’t require a review from the league, it’s likely they’ll take a look at the hit. Normally I’d assume no suspension would be given, but with Orr’s reputation you never know.
Boogaard still out
Derek Boogaard missed last night’s game against the Stars due to his back. He last played Dec 14th against the Ducks.

Another reminder that hockeyfights.com is currently in holiday-mode here on the day before Christmas.
Logs will be updated, emails will be answered if possible, and you may see a blog post or two from David and I, but the videos from last night’s NHL action most likely will not be updated until Christmas night or the day after.
All of us here at the site would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.
Last night’s action
Zack Stortini did double-time in the sin bin last night as he dropped his gloves in separate bouts against Ben Eager and Martin Lapointe.
The only true heavyweight fight of the night was between Jody Shelley and Darcy Hordichuk.
If anyone thought that Eric Nystrom would have racked up six fighting majors already this season, you must have a gift. “Little Nystrom” fought Sheldon Brookbank during the first period of last night’s Devils-Flames game. While Nystrom hasn’t been as impressive as his father thus far, I don’t think anyone minds his willingness.
A bout between Steve Ott and Francis Bouillon rounded out the evening.
Need to get away from family for a little bit?
Be sure to check out yesterday’s blog post as it features close to a dozen articles that you should check out.

The Cam comparisons will come
Milan Lucic has 7 points and 52 PIMs in 30 games. He’s a plus-3 and 2 of his 3 goals are game-winners. 40 of his 52 PIMs come from fighting majors, which has already made him an instant hit in Boston. A good bout against the Blues‘ Barret Jackman at home yesterday only added to his popularity.
Few knew what to expect from the 19-year old this eason. It was thought he may spend at least part of the season with the Vancouver Giants. He had 30 goals and 38 assists in 70 games with the WHL team last year.
Lucic has quickly cemented his spot on the B’s roster though, and as he develops a scoring touch in the NHL the inevitable comparisons to city treasure Cam Neely will come. It’s a pressure that has little comparison in most NHL cities and how he handles it will determine what type of player he can become at the elite level.
Lucic recently answered some fan email over on The Hockey News’ website.
An in-depth look at concussions
The Toronto Star takes a good look at concussions, how they affect the game, the players and their families. It’s feature rich with video, slideshows and personal accounts: Critical Condition: The human toll of hockey concussions. There’s a link list to the right of the article.
Wayne Fish of phillyBurbs.com has a related story about Simon Gagne’s recovery from his concussion.

A goal, an assist, and a fight tonight for Sidney Crosby. Yes, a fight. I wouldn’t kid about The Kid.
Crosby dropped the gloves with Andrew Ference in the second period of Pittsburgh’s 5-4 shootout win over Boston this evening.
Not only was it Crosby’s first fight in the NHL, it was his first fight ever. He went 121 games in the QMJHL without shedding the mitts. Crosby faired quite well too. I guess Georges Laraque is giving lessons these days.
Speaking of Laraque, he had a quick scrap with Zdeno Chara in tonight’s game as well.
The entire game was an entertaining one.
Do you know the melee in San Jose?
What a mess in the third period of another great game last night.
With the way the fighting majors were handed out, the matchups were entered like this:

Keith Yandle (no FM) vs Steve Bernier
Daniel Carcillo vs Jeremy Roenick (no FM)

Simon’s Chief Wants Apology
The Chief of the Assembly of First Nations is asking NHL vice-president Colin Campbell to apologize for his incorrect comments concerning Chris Simon having a drug and alcohol abuse problem. Simon is a member of the tribe.
Campbell mistakenly stated that Simon was scheduled to receive counseling from “drug and alcohol doctors” associated with the league:
During a conference call Wednesday, Campbell said he hoped the “the actual help (Simon’s) going to get and counseling he’s going to get from the drug and the alcohol doctors” would help Simon “deal with the problem he has.”
A league spokesman said Campbell was referring to the league and union’s jointly administered substance abuse and behavioral health program, which is providing Simon

Bosse Loss to Larenas Under Review
LNAH enforcer Steve Bosse‘s recent loss to Icho Larenas at TKO 31: Young Guns is currently being reviewed by the Quebec Athletic Commission to see whether or not Larenas verbally submitted during the contest.
Larenas suffered an unintentional poke in the eye by Bosse during the second round of the bout. Referee Yves Lavigne stopped the bout and allowed the ringside physician to take a look at Larenas. He apparently told Lavigne that he was unable to see and Lavigne ended up giving Larenas a few minutes to recover.

The New York Islanders and Chris Simon have come to terms on a leave of absence for the long-time veteran.
Simon acknowledged that time away from the game is need at this point of his career in a prepared statement:
“I want to start off by making clear that there is no excuse for my actions on Saturday night and I apologize to everyone involved,” Simon said. “The Islanders and I agree that the right thing to do is for me to take some time away from the team. I have enjoyed a long career achieving my dream of being a player in the National Hockey League and I’m proud of my accomplishments. But I acknowledge that time and assistance is needed before I return to the game.”
For those that still aren’t aware of what happened. Simon was assessed a match penalty over the weekend for stomping Pittsburgh Penguin Jarkko Ruutu with his skate.
While a suspension is expected, NHL vice president Colin Campbell isn’t expected to hand out a ruling until later in the week, pending an investigation on the matter.
LaRose Looks for Upshall After Game
Chad LaRose caused a small stir in a Wachovia Center hallway after the Hurricanes win over the Flyers on Saturday night.
Apparently Scottie Upshall had something to say to Larose during the game that wasn’t appreciated:
LaRose emerged from the Carolina dressing room furious with Upshall for “dirty” and “personal” things he said on the ice.
“I even put someone else’s shoes on so I can kick him in the face,” LaRose said.
Hurricanes defenseman Niclas Wallin and video coach Chris Huffine retrieved LaRose from the hallway and LaRose declined to comment afterward. He was escorted past the Flyers dressing room to the Carolina bus by another team staffer.
Upshall has no idea why LaRose was upset with him:
“That is obviously something he has issues with,” Upshall said. “I can’t pinpoint why he would come after myself or anyone else.”
McGrattan Feeling Fine
Brian McGrattan is feeling fine after injuring his shoulder during a fight with Georges Laraque last week. The Ottawa Sun says that he will be a game-time decision on Tuesday night against Boston.
What did the pain feel like?
“I don’t know what he weighs, but it felt like 300 pounds,” said McGrattan.

Chris Simon is quite the enigma. His teammates and former teammates will vouch for what a good guy and teammate he can be, but once again, he’s at the root of an on-ice incident that will lead to a suspension.
While going back to the benches, Simon stepped on the back of Jarkko Ruutu‘s leg. hockeyfights.com member StealinUrCar06 has posted a video to YouTube, fellow member pesadillamal slowed it down, and there’s also the Pittsburgh feed.
This is an easy 5-10 game suspension for any player, but with Simon’s history, it’ll most likely turn it into 10-15 games or even longer.
Laraque’s intentions
In the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Penguins revel in Laraque’s presence, Georges Laraque talks about what was behind sliding into Biron, and what it cost him.
“Crosby shouldn’t fight anyone because he’s the best player in the world, so right away when that happened, I was thinking about ways to show [Biron] we didn’t like it,” Laraque recalled yesterday after the Penguins practiced at Southpointe.
“I wanted to do it more in a comical way. I wanted to do it just to provoke, not with intent to injure, so I wouldn’t get suspended.”
Fedoruk’s Duck departure disputed
The Star Tribune has a few quotes from Todd Fedoruk about leaving the Ducks, including what he was told the reason was.
Last season, Burke told the Star Tribune that Fedoruk “refused to sign a contract extension,” so he traded him. “That’s not true,” Fedoruk said.
After Fedoruk was injured in a fight with now-teammate Derek Boogaard, “they needed a heavyweight. They couldn’t go three months without one, [so they traded for George Parros]. At least, that’s what Burkie told me. Had nothing to do with money.”

Downie’s temper gets in-house heat
TSN listed Jesse Boulerice‘s suspension as being finished on their set of transactions for December 12th. That is not the case.
To date, Boulerice has served 16 out of the 25 games on his current suspension according to Flyers beat writer Tim Panaccio. The Flyers have been shipping Boulerice back and forth from their AHL affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms in order to create room for call-ups since his punishment began.
According to the AHL’s transactions page, Boulerice was not recalled for Philadelphia’s contests against Pittsburgh and Montreal this week so the number remains the same.
It seems that TSN might just be counting down the number of games that have taken place since Boulerice was suspended by the league. Yahoo! Sports and CBS Sportsline both made a similar mistake when they ended Steve Downie‘s suspension one game early.
Boulerice will be eligible to play in the AHL starting this Sunday. The Phantoms play the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins that afternoon.
Brian McGrattan injured his right shoulder in a fight against Georges Laraque last night. At the end of a quick scrap, McGrattan hit the ice with BGL on top of him. McGrattan left immediately and did not return. It’s not know how much time McGrattan may miss.
David Clarkson and Milan Lucic were in the only other fight of the night, which was a longer, entertaining scrap.
