Volpatti Drops Winchester, Suspensions Continue

After a couple of quiet preseason days we saw some action last night from rivalry games and players battling for roster spots.

The highlight of the night, from the Canucks-Sharks game, was Aaron Volpatti dropping Brad Winchester with one punch. Winchester skated right into the shot and then sat on the ice for a few moments before being escorted off with help. He returned in the third period.

There were two other fights in the game: Jamie McGinn scrapping with Keith Ballard and heavyweights Todd Fedoruk facing off against Jim Vandermeer.

Jersey and Philly saw multiple fight as well. Stephane Veilleux and Harry Zolnierczyk picked up majors, somehow. It was a quick one that could have been called double roughings, but still a worthy clip to watch thanks to an amazing save by Martin Brodeur. Brad Mills and Zac Rinaldo dropped the gloves later on in a fight controlled by Mills.

Suspensions are the new candy

Let's talk about hypocritical, they nail a dozen players in the preseason from hits everyone got up from, and then they let the 7 foot tall goon Chara walk away with nothing when he breaks a guys neck and face in to the turnbuckle. Yes, I admit i hate the Canadians and like the Bruins, not the point. The point is meter out the justice accordingly, the crime should merit the punishment. It isn't happening that way right now. Posted by Andy Gates on 2011-10-06 16:01:45 It's funny to see all these non-athletes complaining about keeping players safer. They are only eliminating headshots, blindside hits, and hits from behind and punishing more harshlyfor those said actions when they occur. If you like seeing people get blasted in the face watch MMA or porn. The players are tired of people like Cooke, Richards and Wisnewski always taking cheapshots and intending to end careers. Then when you send an enforcer out the enforcers get 2-5-10 and are out of the game. With the elimination of targeting the head it should be easier to hit people. If the average player is about 200 pounds and the human head weighs roughly 8 pounds, you have 192 left to devistate. Simple math may be complicated for classless people like Oil Can Henry but to spell it out 192 is greater than 8.
Posted by Peter Long on 2011-10-06 08:49:06 ALL opposing players must be lined-up, straight-on AND notified 2 minutes in-advance before a check can be delivered -- otherwise, fines AND suspensions WILL BE handed-out - including notes to the offending player's parents. The NHL will get this non-sense cleaned-up if it has to get rid of physical-play, all-together!

All pansies need not apply, lighten up and stop trying to turn our sport in to figure skating. Being politically correct is for politicians.... Not hockey players.
