Sens, Flyers Brawl Again

It wasn't quite March 2004, but the Sens and Flyers had a nice line brawl to complete what went from a competitive game to a no-nonsense win for Philly on Thursday.

It all started with under eight minutes left in the third. Claude Giroux throttled Jesse Winchester with a hit and Chris Neil promptly came across the ice and jumped on top of Giroux. Winchester and Jeff Carter were the only pairing that resulted in a fight, with neither landing anything of note.

Minutes later, Giroux was asked to answer the bell by Nick Foligno and obliged. The two engaged in a spirited, even scrap. On the following faceoff, each team brought out the big guns and a battle ensued.

Jarkko Ruutu and Scott Hartnell exchanged words before dropping the gloves. They were joined by Neil and Jody Shelley in a back and forth tilt. Sean O'Donnell decided to go with Matt Carkner but went down to the ice rather easily.

Other action

Five other fights took place last night. The most notable involved George Parros and Colton Orr. Parros stunned Orr with a right hand and then fell on top of him as the two hit the ice. Orr hit the playing surface rather hard and was visibly woozy, skating away with a cut above his left eye.

Hurricanes-Rangers also featured a spirited tilt between Jay Harrison and Brandon Prust, who were followed on the very next shift by Ryan Carter and Kris Newbury.

Eddubbs I think your mom is calling you. You seem to forget not so long back the Flyers were the whipping boys of the Division. Swings and roundabouts, real teams like you (whipping boys in 2005 / 2006) and the Blackhawks who have had to take numerous high picks to rebuild. Your last sentence doesn't even make sense? Too Many teams in the NHL? Not in Canada we could argue the case for another 2 teams at least up here. When I mentioned certain idiots shouldn't discuss watch hockey, I meant people like you.

Carkner needs to get out of this town and on to a real team like the Flyers, Rangers, Blackhawks..you know...real teams!Ottawa cannot win, fight or do anything productive...THEY DON'T MATTER! Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto are the real ass kickers in Canada -not Ottawa. Sens go F*ck yourselves you pathetic loser. Trade for Neil's brother Sean Avery so you can have twin assholes on your team. This is another example of too many teams in the NHL. Package these idiots with the Devils and purge.

Posted by Mark on 2011-01-22 02:25:58 Ok I get sooooo tired of people complaining about home team announcers,of course their "homers" they are announcing for the home team that is what they are paid to do, they are announcing to the home team fans, so yes they are going to have a slant towards that team, the difference is when it is a national brodcast ie NBC/CBC, when they lean towards one team that is wrong, they should be netural on a national broadcast.As for the fights I have watched them a few times, I don't think anyone was "bitched slapped" or pummled,just good old time hockey,if only the goalies got involved
Posted by Wubby on 2011-01-21 20:50:53 Not sure why the Sens fans are so upset by this. This is old time hockey. Everyone did what they are supposed to. Neil went after Giroux for laying big (but clean hit) when his team was already up big. Carkner should go after Shelley when game is getting crazy - Shelley needed to go with Neil for going after Giroux. Giroux manned up and dropped them to account for his big hits during the game. Carkner showed class by not destroying O'd. Once Shelley made Neil pay for going after Giroux it was all over. Think we will see same thing when Flyers play Rangers next time.

Dont call yourself an enforcer if you are going down against smaller opposition. And an FYI, if you think all sports teams callers are not homers, stop watching Hockey your an idiot.

This was wasn't as impressive as the one that set the most penalty minutes ever in one hockey game, but was very entertaining none-the-less. Jeff Carter and Claude Giroux more then handled themselves for two guys who one, hasn't fought in 3 years and the other getting into his first fight. Scott Hartnell is a grinder and will always be game win or lose. Jody Shelley doesn't need any reason for who he does battle with or who he doesn't do battle with. The man has had more fights then anybody in the NHL today and he went with The Legend 4 times in two days so he dictates who and when he wants to fight. It just so happened he wanted to beat down on Chris Neil who, despite myself loving his game was due to be smacked back to reality. The bottom line is the Flyers smoked the Senators 6-2. That's right people 6-2. And at the end of all the fights they definelty came away with the mental victory. Nothing that went down in this game gave the Senators any hope of making a playoff spot. Sad fall from grace for a team who has been pretty dominent in the Eastern Conference for the past 10 years. And where are the Broad Street Bullies going this year? To victory lane hoisting the Stanley Cup.

Giroux hits all the time. That's why he draws comparisons to Forsberg. Second, the guy had the puck, he didn't leave his skates, and it was clearly shoulder to shoulder (possibly even arm to arm). Cheap shot my (part other than heel). Give me a break.

Carkner has bloodied up some big names this year.... Also, good for Giroux for fighting...but "bulliesFromPhilly" there is a difference from someone losing there balance and falling, vs slamming...and you dont win a fight by slamming someone to the ice, I can slam someone too after getting punched several times, doesn't mean I win. All is all, Flyers really aren't that tough...good hockey team, but they aren't mean like they used to be.

The only cheap shot I saw was by Niel but that is expected and the only reason Shelley didn't go with Carkner earlier is so he could be on the ice later in case the Sens. targeted skills players later in the game.

Posted by james on 2011-01-21 12:24:43 That's why I love Philly's announcers. They CAN be homers from time to time, but 99% of the time they are very non-biased. I didn't hear what the Sens announcers said, but I'm sure it was just as bad as most of the other announcers around the league.
