Rookie Meets Veteran

After expericing some success in the lower weight classes during his rookie campaign, one would naturally expect Kyle Clifford to test the heavyweight waters at some point. On Monday, Shawn Thornton made it easy.

The two exchanged blows in a solid scrap during the first period of Bruins-Kings, and both fighters did pretty well for themselves. The other heavyweight fight of the night featured Cam Janssen and David Koci in a heated battle.

Grabbing headlines was Leafs-Canes, which saw Tim Gleason's situation-ending one-punch of Nikolai Kulemin, who gave Gleason some gloved punches before eating one himself.

An entertaining exchange between Clarke MacArthur and Chad LaRose took place minutes before.

Sunday's Cup rematch between the Flyers and Hawks produced two bouts: an uneventful grappling match along the boards between Scott Hartnell and Bryan Bickell, who were followed by Daniel Carcillo and Jake Dowell in a bloody and spirited tilt.

The weights might be off, but weightclass here is obviously class of fighter, not literal weight. Hal Gill's enormous, no one considers him a "heavyweight" in a fighting context.
Posted by David on 2011-01-26 21:43:45 I just took a peek at the hights and weights of the fighters. I think the weights are way off. Voros 6'4 only 190? Right. Then Parros 6'5 215? Sure. The list Clifford at 6'1 180! Everyone he fights has 15-30 pounds on him. Who is he gunna fight that's in his weight class? He is my new man crush..Can't wait to see where he is at in 2-3 yrs.
Posted by Rob on 2011-01-26 21:31:37 Rob, I have Sutherby, Voros, Dorsett and Brookbank as middleweights and Jackman and Staubitz as light heavys. Bissonnette is on the bubble. It's a matter of how one sees things in terms of weight classes of course, but I think that we can both agree that none of the aforementioned fighters, and Clifford, are taking on the big boys at the rate that Parros and Thornton are.
