After a relatively quiet month by his standards, Sean Avery is back at it again.

During a second period gathering that nearly became a line brawl in Sunday's Flyers-Rangers meeting, Avery took advantage of a favorable matchup against Matt Carle and pounded him to the ice, getting in a couple of shots while Carle was already down.

Matt Walker and Kris Newbury grappled and exchanged punches along the boards during the fracas, but neither received fighting majors. The same went for Darroll Powe and Brandon Prust, who never got going.

A pair of fights also took place in Canucks-Wild. Brad Staubitz surprised Aaron Volpatti with a couple of left hands that knocked Volpatti down while Chuck Kobasew and Keith Ballard had a fairly even scrap.

Barnaby dropped the gloves plenty of times with guys like Brashear and Tie Domi. I do not see Avery doing something like that anytime soon. Carcillo has with bigger opponents. Doesn't matter win or lose he(Carcillo)still has done it. Was it wrong for Avery to do what he did, Yes! Is he a good player? Yes he is! He is dirty, I dont care for him that much. He'll get his one day. He'll piss off Godard,Engelland,Shelley,Orr,DJ King,Carkner or someone else. No one to protect him when he is laying on the ice. Takes a similar player like McSorely to do this

Judging by appearances--Rolfe wasn't a great looking guy in the first place--so I guess no harm done there. Even so, if one were to take another look at that fight you might notice that one of Schultz's paws is firmly gripping Rolfe's hair thus abetting the time-space continuum of fist meeting face. So all you 'code' people--how would that particular fight fit into the peculiarities of what you insist is a 'code' of honorable gladiators? May as well say that those Flyers teams of the 70's and 80's--the heyday of the team--always took liberties with the rules--accepted no codes--might as well have been Ghengis Khan's barbarians. For instance how many times did a much larger Flyer player such as Schultz, Saleski, Kelly etc. pick a fight with 5'7" Ed Johnstone? Quite a number of times. Anyone remember Rick Middleton getting in many fights? Now there was a nifty hockey player. I can remember very clearly though the aforementioned Mr. Schultz jumping and pummeling Middleton right off a face-off with no warning at all. 'It was intimidation'--they would say then. 'Part of the game'. But that was then. We're more civilized now. Okay--I can go along with that. Avery shouldn't have walloped Carle when he was flat on his ass. Maybe someone hasn't given him all the updates on the 'Code' though. Or maybe he's just the criminal that a good majority thinks he is and just chose to ignore it or maybe this code which isn't written down anywhere that I know of--isn't worth the paper it's not written on. Whatever--don't need lectures from Pennsylvania or Saskatchewan about things that don't really exist.

Gaborik took a swing First at Carcillo so Carbomb punched him out. Carle did not want to fight Avery ,watch it again just in case your blind. Shelley wanted to pound him later but would have possibly affected outcome of game. Avery could have went with other flyers at that moment or at many other moments during game but didn't . That's what the broadcast showed. If it's anything else, well , like I said your blind. Avery will get it soon enough.

He sees Walker--who is what?-6'5?--jumping in for Powe--squaring off with a somewhat smaller Prust--he's coming from behind Walker on the play and jumps in too. WTF? Good teammate if you ask me. 2) Avery-Carle. I can't speak to how a Flyers fan might see it but that Gaborik/Carcillo matchup from last year is still fresh in the minds of a lot of Ranger fans and I suspect fresh in the minds of some of the players as well. Still I got to think even though Carle has no fight record that Gaborik/Carcillo was even more of a mismatch than this one. The somewhat bigger Carle with gloves off seemed to be wrestling to get an arm free. At least the first punch that knocked him on his ass was fine. The question of whether Avery should have kept swinging after he was down I'll leave for now but it's not all that rare. Anyway I started following hockey in the 70's and everybody on those Flyers teams fought--no room on those teams for a guy who didn't so maybe Carle needed to be blooded a little. Honestly I thought the whole episode was a laugh riot.

If two established tough guys square off in an effort to give their team a lift in the midst of the game, so be it. If you going to be tough, square up and go at it. Guys like Avery would evaporate in a situation like that. No pity for the Flyers in this case as they are often guilt of the exact same thing.

I like his game, but he goes over the top sometimes. I am a Flyers fan...and admit that some of Mike Richards' hits in the past were questionable...Rangers fans should be able to say the same about Avery

He reminds me so much of Matthew Barnaby and Barnaby was the man. Avery loses points though for breaking the code. It's not just the hockey code. He broke the code of hockey fights, mma fights and in some cases even street fights. When you ko a man it's done. Let it go. You are the clear winner. Adding insult to injury by continuing to pound on a ko'd opponent it just a bit coward. Yeah, yeah I know all about adreneline in fights. I get it. But I also have the discipline that when I have an opponent beaten I leave it at that. So memo to Sean Avery and every other hot headed fighter who can't control the emotions. When you ko your opponent it's over.
