Just five minutes into game 3 Aaron Rome hit Nathan Horton late after Horton passed the puck. Rome was given an interference major and a game misconduct. Doc Emrick reported Horton appeared to be talking and moving his arms as he was taken off the ice on a stretcher.

The Bruins did not score on the five-minute powerplay and trail the Canucks 2-0 in the series.

Update 855pm: Pierre McGuire gave an update late in the first period that Horton was moving all extremities while on his way to the hospital.

I hope Horton gets back and is 100% but speed kills when its not used wisely. Colin Campbell steps down as the league's head disciplinarian because his son is on the bruins.. why was he in that position in the first place??

I just want to address your comment towards me. in the air or not in the air is not a subjective thing - either he was or wasn't at the time of impact. If anyone has looked at this closely knows he did not leave the ice. yes he did afterwards, but that is not relavent. Anyone who says he left the ice at the point of impact has not looked closely enough at the hit or is just plainly not tellling the truth. Regarding it being a late hit - well everyone can easily determine that the hit took place under 1sec of Horton passing the puck. So that is not an issue here. This obviously is not a blind side hit as it was head- on. Again look at the hit and everyone sees that there was no elbow but a textbook shoulder hit. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this hit except for the fact that Horton got hurt. The question for me about this matter is what the he'll is the NHL doing leveling this extreme punishment for a textbook hit under their own rules. To take that hit out of the game means taking every hit out of the game. Shame on the NHL! I am from Canada and have been watching hockey for over 40 years. If you disagree with my assessment to this matter you better have done your homework.

Stop whining! Chara can drill someone into a sanction and skate away freely while Rome gets smacked with a 4 game suspension? Someone tell me how ANYTHING here is "justice"... The ONLY justice I see here, is Horton down and out where he belongs. Stupidity will always cause these things, but nothing's "stupider" than a bunch of bruins skating around pretending to play hockey while all they want to do is drill players away for good..just because they can get away with it ALL. Liking the series, hope another Boston player gets destroyed and sent out for good! Prayers for Rome, hope he recovers from the dreadful suspension LOL!

The officiating is a Joke now a days so inconsistent!! Numerous hits,slashes and dirty play never called for Vancouver. In Vancouver Chara crosschecked a twin 13 times while holding him on the boards....NO Call. Kessler Achilles slashed over and over on the wrists, behind the knees....No calls and the list goes on. All that's going to happen is build up of frustration which in turn unclear thinking. Unclear thinking at the speed of the game is harmfull. If the game didn't get out of control Rome's line would never have been on the ice or even better Rome would not have stood up at the line and rather chase back into the corner. NHL didn't do a thing when Nasland was crushed by Moore and we all know what happen after that. Now if Tim Thomas laid that exact hit on Crosby instead of one of the sisters it WOULD have been called period! It all comes down to the NHL wanting to keep control of who wins by officials on the ice.

Horton followed the play after passing the puck, of course he couldn't see the hit. Rule 48 your gone Rome, and unfortunately so is Horton for a long, long time.

He's got his 4-game suspension because the NHL thinks it'll make difference. Personally, I still think he bent down and jumped into Horton's head. The impact isn't what caused him to get both feet 4-6 inches off the ice; it was his own momentum.

But just to play along, I set video of this thing up and segmented it to see for myself since there are so many people out there worried about whether Rome's hit was an aerial assault or surface combat. Sorry to say, mate, that "Guisse" lad has it close to right except that Rome's right skate left the ice about 1/20th of a second before impact. His left skate was still firmly planted until midway through the collision which lasted a total of 0:04:6 milliseconds for anyone interested in how long it takes to remind players not to drift unaware into your own zone.

Rome's hit against Horton? Well evidentally, it appears to depend upon your perspective. We can look at re-plays, scrutinize the NHL rulebook and consider the severity of any involved injuries. Some folks look at the play and legitimately see Rome as aggressively pouncing on Horton and intending to harm him while others will insist that Horton isn't watching what he's doing and thus received an honest (but late) check by Rome. In the end, it will be an NHL official who will review the play, talk with the players involved and consult the rule book and come up with a punitive decision as honestly and fairly as he can.

Horton flying and Rome stopped created a lot of force - Horton went down and Rome went up - it's that simple. so based on your incorrect assumptions you would also agree this is a good hit.

Conclusion. hit was within or under one second of Horton passing the puck - legal. Hit was head on - not blind side - legal Rome did not jump or leave the ice until after the impact - legal. Rome did not take more than 3 strides - legal. This is a textbook hit and 100% legal. yes this was a devastating hit, and I feel bad for Horton - but dude don't go in vancouver's zone stupidly with your head Down! Shame on the NHL for penalizing Rome for a perfectly executed hit according to their own rules! If anyone disagrees with my assessment I would be interested in understanding why - but please - at least look at the hit first.

I'm a neutral observer, meaning I could give a rats azz who wins this, but Rome left his feet. If you failed to see that in the 38 replays then you took too many to the head yourself. I'm a Philly fan for 35 years so I know the rough stuff, but to deliberately try to hurt a guy is crap and has no place in the league. (And yes, the Richards hit was crap too.) Rome leapt at his head because there's a lack of respect in the game anymore. The "staged" fighting has caused the change in our game. The Dave Brown and Bob Probert way of policing the ice isn't apparant anymore. Two guys chatting and shedding the mitts is ridiculous. Brownie said it best, "If you dirty one of my players, I'm going to dirty you back." No one had Horton's back!!! If an aircraft carrier like Probert or Brown had been waering a black jersey with a B on it, Rome never would have done what he did becuase he would have been walking on his elbows today. The game is going to the dogs/cheat shot artists.

Saw some worst stuff all year and to be honest the closest to hitting late and causing serious damage like this one was that Chara/Pacioretty incident, so go figure how they apply rules. Such incident can't be fairly looked at unless your are neutral to both teams. Anyway, about the hit, having played hockey, calling this an obvious late hit is almost a shame. You can't expect that a player can make a decision (to hit), see the pass go (noticing change in situation) and revert his physical commitment to the hit in a matter of a second. Rome saw Horton coming at him looking more closely at his own ass then where he was heading, Rome decision was made to go in Horton's path. It is really a matter of a second here. Now look at the replay starting at 1:29, the puck leaves Horton's stick at 1:30 and at 1:31 Horton is already hitting the ice. 1 second no more, know what can be called a late hit? 1.2seconds, 0.7 seconds. This is a pure game incident. If the hit came 2 seconds later it would have been a shamefull assault and if it came at 0.6 seconds it would have made Don Cherry's rock'em sock'em collection. This being said, the league needs to do something about the equipment. Faster pace, bigger guys and super padded equipment is basically the equivalent of hitting a brick wall.

The rest of the cup: I am not sure if the biting incident was as seriously as the Bruins are making it out to be. If NHL gloves are anything like Peewee and Highschool hockey gloves, those things are pretty darn thick and tough. They are designed to take pucks hitting them in excess of 80mph. I can only imagine how strong someone's jaw must be and sharp their teeth must be to bite clean through the glove and penetrate a player's skin underneath. Oh, and they must be magical jaws and teeth since they did not puncture the glove or leave any imprints on it. I am not saying that he was not bitten, but I doubt the severity of it. I would wear hockey gloves if I needed to capture a loose dog. I also want to know why that Bruins player had his hands anywhere near the Canucks player's mouth. I remember being told by my aunt, that if I did not want someone to bite my fingers, I had best keep them to myself... or at least away from their mouth. Makes a lot of sense to me. Apparently, doesn't make much sense to NHL players. Bruins are showing that they can play as physically as the Canucks. We are ignoring the late crosschecks (see after the play has ended and on downed players) and slashes in favor of highlighting this one hit that resulted in injury. I cannot condemn the canucks when they were just unlucky that the other player got hurt. The Bruins have been lucky no one was hospitalized for their garbage. If they go looking for payback, someone will get seriously hurt. Or, maybe, Campbell is correct. Yes, the soup company as well.

So I say call him for late hit, call him for leaving his feet, sure call him for blindsiding. Im a Boston fan but no one likes to see a player get hurt but penalties are a part of hockey. It was a hard nose hit that should have cost Rome a 5 min. minor, staying away from the misconduct bull. For god sakes NHL, bring back hardnose tough hockey. Now Ive read a few of the posts in here and everyone has good comments and arguments about both sides. My only question or concern would be, if players on the boards can pass a puck and get hit 2-3 seconds after they make the pass, why does it change in open ice??? Bostons player turned to his right and took two strides, then got a shoulder to the head (yes the Head) but Rome is significantly taller...and life taller people hitting shorter people means shoulders to heads. Also Rome never left his feet, he rose up (popped) the Boston player. So again before throwing people under the dirty bus..take a count on hits on the boards and how long after the puck is gone the hit happens...maybe the rules need to be changed..

It was a hair late not a lot late and should only have been a 2 minute penalty. It is unfortunate that Horton was hurt but by not keeping his head up, he bears much of the responsibility. He was looking at his pass not where he was going. Hockey players know to keep their heads on a swivel if they are in the middle of the ice and crossing the blue line. Defencemen are paid to hit and expected to hit. The referee who called the major penalty should be reprimanded by the league. Just because there was an injury there shouldn't be an extra penalty. This wasn't a high stick causing blood which would earn the extra penalty, this was just a hit after a pass. If there is a suspension it would be for league public relations reasons rather than hockey reasons.

It was a definite late hit, but there was not an intent to injure and it was not directed at his head and Rome did not charge at the player. Horton should have had his head up; he was admiring his pass and he skated into the direction of Rome. Rome simply maintained his path of travel and leveled his shoulder into Horton's centre mass at the shoulder and chest. There was no jump. At contact Rome's skate were on the ice. The follow through of the player with more momentum will take the player up and over the player impacted - that's why it appears in many cases that the player has jumeped when in fact they haven't. It was late, but not dirty and would have been legal if it was a half second earlier. He should recieve a one game suspension.

Chara's hit was much worse in so much as he broke the guy's neck and put him out for the season. ALSO WHY WASN'T HORTON SUSPENDED WHEN HE HAD THE ALTERCATION WITH THE FAN IN TAMPA? If hits like this are now punishable by suspension, Scott Stevens would have never played in the NHL. It's like the refs have to over-react when something dramatic happens in the game. Rome's left shoulder pad hit the front-side of the right shoulder pad on Horton. The result of the follow-through clearly shows Horton's chin take the remainder of the blow. Albeit high, this was legitimately a 5 minute major for Interference--but certainly not a case for Rule #48. First off, "blind side" refers to "behind" a player. Hold your arms out to your sides; anything behind your arms is "blind side" and anywhere in front is fair game. The hit was placed toward the front of Horton's body. Whether or not Horton is looking is totally inconsequential. If ya'll want to see perfect 90 degree angle hitting, go play NHL 2009 on xBox. Let this be a lesson to the kiddies not to skate into the zone standing straight up gazing off into la-la land.

Stevens lined guys up the same way but didn't leave his feet and went upper chest but not to the head. No comparison. 2 games for Rome. It not, Thornton will be headhunting in Game 4 (he might anyway).

Bottom line is Chara didn't receive a suspension for driving a guys head into a pole so why should Rome get anything for a clean albeit late hit? He will though, as clearly there's different rules applied to the Boston Bruins. We could see the glee on Bettman's face as Boston takes the momentum in the series. Shameful

I agree it was a very cheap and dirty play but only because he jumped into him and went for the head. There's a big difference between two willing players fighting and someone getting hit late and to the head. It was a dirty hit, Rome got tossed and I'm ok with that call. Maybe a one-game suspension. All professional sports are for entertainment industries. NHL, MLB, NFL, NBA and even tennis and golf. People buy tickets and TV packages to be entertained, yes. A point to nowhere.

It is part of their game. It is the sport of goons...goon fans, goon players goon rules...or lack there-of. It is quite WWE-like. They ought to put a disclaimer on tickets that hockey is for entertainment purposes...ya know like roller derby.

Posted by jmac on 2011-06-06 22:35:01 I watched that replay over and over. Horton made his pass took a couple of steps and was looking for maybe a return pass. Then Rome hit him high, shoulder to the head. I think it was a cheap shot in the fact that Rome went high and Horton had already started to move into position for a return pass. That was textbook blindside. Hey I love tough hockey as much as the next but Rome came from the backside and snuck in there for that shot.
