2008 Turner Cup Playoff Picture Set

ROCHESTER, MI - The Muskegon Fury captured the fourth and final spot in the 2008 Turner Cup Playoffs with a 3-2 victory over Bloomington on Friday. Port Huron secured second place and home ice advantage through the first round after a 5-4 overtime win over Kalamazoo Friday. The Fury will take on number one seeded Fort Wayne while number two Port Huron will face-off with number three Flint, both playing best-of-seven series which will begin this Friday.

Kalamazoo center Kory Karlander led the league in points with 94 to earn this season’s IHL scoring title. He ended the season tied for first in shorthanded goals with four and ranked second in the league in goals (41) and assists (53). Karlander was named IHL Most Valuable Player last week. K-Wings left wing Nick Bootland ended the season with 46 goals to lead the IHL in that category.

Fort Wayne had their IHL record-setting 25 consecutive home winning streak snapped Sunday after a 3-2 overtime loss to the Flint Generals. The loss also snapped the Komets 11 game winning streak. Despite earning his first loss on home ice since December 21st, Fort Wayne goaltender Nick Boucher led the league in goals against average (2.32), only allowing 72 goals against in 31 games played. Teammate Kevin Reiter was second in goals against average with 2.34. Boucher also led all IHL goaltenders in save percentage (.913).

AROUND THE “I”

Bloomington PrairieThunder - (1-1-0-0) – The PrairieThunder finished this season with six more victories and 12 more points than last year's inaugural team. One week after scoring a professional hockey record four goals in 35 seconds, the PrairieThunder scored three goals in a 73-second span in a 7-1 win over Muskegon. Don Parsons finished the season with 38 goals and 43 assists for 81 points. He has 661 career goals and needs 17 to become the all-time goal scorer in modern-day minor league hockey history. Leo Thomas scored 14 points in the last seven games, while Jon Booras scored 12 in the last seven games including two or more points in the last five straight games. Shaun Fisher played in just the final four games with the PrairieThunder, but had an assist in three of those games.

Flint Generals - (2-1-1-0) – The Flint Generals posted two big wins this week, beating the Kalamazoo Wings 5-1 to advance to the Turner Cup Playoffs. Flint is in the playoffs for the second straight year as a franchise and first back-to-back playoff appearances since the 1999-2000 season. Their second win was a 3-2 overtime victory over the Fort Wayne Komets to snap Fort Wayne's 25 game home winning streak that lasted since December. The Generals face the Port Huron Icehawks in the Best of Seven Series. They are 7-6-1-2 overall versus Port Huron including three victories at McMorran Arena. Greg Bullock and Michel Beausoleil each have 18 points this season versus Port Huron, while goaltender Chad Alban has two victories and a shootout loss.

Fort Wayne Komets - (3-0-1-0) – Komets completed the final week of 2007-08 winning two out of a three-game, season-ending miniseries with Flint. The Komets closed out the season with an unbeaten streak (unbeaten in regulation) of 25 games (22-0-2-1). After a 4-1 loss at Bloomington Feb. 17, the Komets went on a 25-game tear winning 22 games and suffering only two overtime losses and one shootout loss to complete the season boasting Fort Wayne franchise records of 56 wins, 12 losses, and 120 points. The Komets registered 32 home wins, tying the franchise record set twice before in 1978-79 and 1986-87. Komet streaks at the end: Colin Chaulk (C) completed the season riding a nine-game point scoring streak (2g, 9a) and four-game assist streak (5a). Luciano Aquino (RW) finished with a four-game point streak (3g, 2a). Goalie Kevin Reiter finished on an 11-game winning streak and an 18-game home winning streak. Goaltender Nick Boucher ended the season unbeaten in regulation 18 consecutive games and was unbeaten in regulation in the last 24 games that he started. The Komets finished with a six-game road winning streak after Saturday's 6-3 win at Flint and completed the season Sunday at home with a 3-2 overtime loss to Flint to go unbeaten in regulation 25 games (22-0-2-1) as noted above.

Kalamazoo Wings - (0-2-1-0) – K-Wings finish the season on a seven-game winless streak (0-3-3-1). This year marks the first-time in six seasons that the K-Wings have not made the playoffs and their second straight IHL season (1999-00) the K-Wings have missed out on the playoffs. Nick Bootland led the IHL in goals scored (46), power-play goals (19) and shots on goal (354). Kory Karlander led the league in points (94) and shared the league lead in shorthanded goals (4). Glenn Detulleo lead the league in assists (56). Tyler Willis eclipsed the 3,000 penalty minute plateau in his career on 04/12/08 versus Port Huron. Last Saturday versus Port Huron, Kalamazoo recorded 21 shots on goal in the second period, that's a K-Wings season high for shots in a period. Jamie Vanderveeken led all IHL defenseman in power-play goals with eight. Former K-Wing IHL alum, Brent Jarrett coached the K-Wings during their final two games of the regular season. Four of the K-Wings five overtime losses came against Port Huron. Kalamazoo allowed seven power-play goals against Port Huron this season; however the K-Wings scored six shorthanded tallies versus the Icehawks.

Muskegon Fury – (1-1-1-0) – By taking three points this week, the Muskegon Fury finished the season with 76 points and clinched the fourth and final playoff spot in the International Hockey League. This past week, the Fury lost in overtime at Fort Wayne, 4-3; won at home against Bloomington, 3-2; then finished the season at Bloomington, losing 7-1. The Fury finish the season 35-35-4-2. The Fury take on Fort Wayne in the first round of the IHL playoffs. Game 1 is Friday at Fort Wayne, Game 2 will be Saturday night in Muskegon and Game 3 is Sunday in Fort Wayne.

Port Huron Icehawks - (2-0-0-0) – Friday’s overtime win over Kalamazoo was the Icehawks fourth overtime win versus the K-Wings this season. The Icehawks are now 4-0-0-1 in their last five games and 7-0-1-2 in their last ten contests. They have not lost in regulation since March 21 and have lost just three times in regulation (with each loss coming to the Fort Wayne Komets) since February 23. Several players finished the regular season riding significant scoring streaks. Kris Vernarsky is riding a nine game point streak (5g, 7a), Jamie Carroll is on an eight game point streak (7g, 6a) and Tab Lardner is on a nine game point streak (6g, 6a) and three game goal streak (3g). With a win Saturday over Kalamazoo, goalie Larry Sterling is now 8-0-2-1 in his last 11 games and has not lost in regulation since February 23. He is ranked second in the league in save percentage (.912), is tied for second in the league in wins (24) with Fort Wayne’s Nick Boucher and is ranked third in goals against average (2.51).
