Capitals Recall Sami Lepisto From Hershey

Tuesday, Apr. 8th, 2008

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have recalled defenseman Sami Lepisto from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Lepisto (SA-mee LEPIS-toh), 23, has played in 54 games for Hershey this year, posting 45 points (4 goals, 41 assists). He leads all Hershey defensemen in scoring and is tied for fourth among AHL defensemen in points. His +30 rating leads the Bears and is tied for second in the league, while his 41 assists rank third in the league for defensemen.

Lepisto was selected by the Capitals in the third round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, 66th overall, and becomes the fourth member of the 2004 draft class on the Washington roster (joining Alex Ovechkin, Jeff Schultz and Mike Green, who were all taken in the first round). Lepisto spent four seasons in the top professional league in Finland before making the move to the United States to play for the Bears.

The 6’1”, 195-pound native of Espoo, Finland, made his NHL debut on Feb. 16 and played 14:16 at Tampa Bay. He has played in seven games for the Caps this season and recorded his first NHL point, an assist to Brooks Laich, on March 14 against Atlanta.
