Three Players Have Tricky Weekend

ROCHESTER, MI - Over the weekend, three players from three different teams recorded hat tricks. Brent Hughts became the first Port Huron Icehawk to score a hat trick this season. He tallied three even-strength goals Friday in the Icehawks 8-2 victory over the Flint Generals. That same night down in Fort Wayne, Luciano Aquino scored three of the Komets four goals, all three on the power play. The three man-advantage tallies is an IHL individual game high. Sunday afternoon, Bloomington’s Don Parsons tied a league high for goals in a game scoring four goals. He scored two even-strength and two on the power play, including the game winner in overtime, pushing the PrairieThunder to a 7-6 overtime win in Flint. This is the second time this season both Aquino and Parsons have recorded hat tricks this season.
The Fort Wayne Komets broke the 42-year-old IHL record of 22 consecutive home wins set back in the 1965-66 season by the Muskegon Mohawks Friday night after a close 4-3 victory over Kalamazoo. The last time Fort Wayne lost at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum was back on December 21st, losing 6-4 to the K-Wings. The Komets extended their record breaking streak to 24 wins after defeating the Muskegon Fury Saturday by a score of 6-4. With the two victories, Fort Wayne increases their lead over second place Port Huron to 30 points.
With the end of the regular season rapidly approaching, the bottom two teams are still fighting for their playoff lives. Fifth place Kalamazoo (70 points) plays five of their last six games against second place Port Huron (77 points) and third place Flint (73 points). Sixth place Bloomington (63 points) is not out of the race, playing each team at least one more time, and wrapping up the season with a home-and-home series with fourth place Muskegon (71 points).

Bloomington PrairieThunder - (2-2-0-0) – Rookie Neil Clark scored only two points in his first nine games since joining the PrairieThunder 17 games ago. He has since scored seven points in the last eight games. Jon Booras, the team's third-leading scorer, broke a drought of 12 games without a goal in the PrairieThunder's 7-6 overtime win at Flint on Sunday. Booras had scored one point in the previous 10 games. Don Parsons had a franchise record four goals and six points Sunday in Flint. He now needs 20 goals to break Kevin Kerr's modern day minor league hockey record for goals scored. Leo Thomas has scored at least one point in 17 of the team's last 24 games. The PrairieThunder set a franchise record when it scored five goals in one period (the third) against Flint.
Flint Generals - (2-1-1-0) – The Flint Generals had one of their better weeks during the month of March posting a mark of 2-1-1-0, earning four points. However, the month of March was the worst one of the season for team with a mark of 4-10-1-2. After dominating the season long series with the Bloomington Prairie Thunder, Flint has dropped four of the last five meetings, including three in a row at Perani Arena and Event Center. The Generals though have been very strong and unbeaten in the last three games at Perani Arena Event Center with mark of 2-0-1-0 for five points. The team has fired six power play goals in those three games. Nick Tuzzolino leads all rookies with 21 power play assists and it third in total assists among youngsters at 32. Even though Justin DePretis has been only in the Generals line-up for 15 games, he has 62 shots on goal and a shooting percentage of 24.2%, which leads all rookies.
Fort Wayne Komets - (2-0-0-0) – The Komets hit the 50-win plateau for the eight time in the 56-year history of the Fort Wayne franchise. The Komets' record is 53 wins in a season, set in 2003-04. The Komets are also five points shy of their record of 112 points in a season, set four times, with seven games remaining. The two home wins over the weekend gives the Komets 31 home wins for the season, one home win shy of the franchise record of 32, with two home games remaining. The Komets are also riding an 18-game unbeaten streak (16-0-1-1). The last loss in regulation was February 17th at Bloomington. The Komet's home win Friday was their last meeting of the season with Kalamazoo, taking the series 12-1-1-1. Kalamazoo's one regulation win over the Komets during the season was the last time the Komets lost at home, December 21st, 6-4. Career highs: Komet goaltender Nick Boucher set a new career high with his 21st win Friday night. Matt Reynolds (LW) set a new career high of 46 points in a season with an assist Saturday night. David Hukalo set a new career high of 19 goals in a season with a pair of markers in Saturday night's 6-4 win over Muskegon.
Kalamazoo Wings - (1-1-1-0) – K-Wings snapped a six-game road winless streak with a 3-1 victory over Bloomington. Nick Bootland is on a four-game point and goal streak. Kory Karlander is on a four-game point streak. Justin Cross is on a three-game point streak. Kalamazoo will play four of their final six regular season games at home. The K-Wings are on a six-game home winning streak. Nick Bootland leads the league in goals (41) and power-play goals (170). Kory Karlander leads the league in points (86) and assists (51). Jamie Vanderveeken is tied for the league lead in goals scored among defenseman with 14. General Manager Wade Welsh and injured forward Glenn Detulleo served as coaches for the K-Wings this past weekend replacing Brian Curran, who was injured during a morning skate on Friday.
Muskegon Fury – (1-3-0-0) – The Fury finished the week with a record of 1-3-0-0, but the win Sunday over Kalamazoo keeps the Fury one point ahead of the K-Wings for fourth place in the IHL. This week, the Fury have a full schedule with four games in five days, including three on the road. Wednesday, the Fury travel to Flint again. The Fury are 6-6-1-0 against the Generals this season, and trail Flint by just two points for third place in the IHL. Friday, the Fury are at Port Huron. Muskegon is 6-7-0-1 against the Ice Hawks this season. The Fury’s Dan Riedel is currently on a 13-game point streak, the second-longest streak in the league. The IHL’s defending Forward of the Week scored five points (2G, 3A) this week. His 27 goals, 22 assists and 49 points lead all Fury rookies. Philippe Plante needs two points for 300 in his career. Mark Cadotte is six assists away from 300 for his career and 12 goals shy of 200 for his career. David Segal is three games away from 100 for his career. David Herring needs three points for 50 in his career. Robin Bouchard needs seven goals for 600 in his career.
Port Huron Icehawks - (2-0-0-1) – With six games (four home and two away) remaining in their schedule, the second place Hawks need just six points to clinch a playoff berth and 12 points to clinch second place. Marty Magers turned away 30 shots on Wednesday to shutout the Bloomington PrairieThunder 2-0 at McMorran Arena. The shutout was the Icehawks second of the season and Magers first this season. Several Icehawks recorded milestones last week. On Wednesday, Steve Hildenbrand recorded his 100th career goal and Marty Magers surpassed 5,000 minutes in his professional career. On Friday, Hildenbrand played in his 350th career game and Joe Markusen played in his 200th career game. Several Icehawks are also approaching milestones. Robert Snowball needs one assist to reach 50 helpers in his career; Rich Hansen is two goals shy of 50 in his pro career, Donnie Margettie needs just five points to reach 500 in his career, and Jamie Lovell is just three assists shy of 50 in his pro career.
