Thrashers Sign 2007 Draft Choice Spencer Machacek

The Atlanta Thrashers have signed forward Spencer Machacek (muh-HA-chehk), the team’s third-round selection (67th overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, according to Executive Vice President, General Manager and Head Coach Don Waddell.
Machacek, 19, has recorded career-bests in all three scoring categories with 33 goals and 45 assists for 78 points in 70 games with the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League (WHL) this season. He helped the Giants advance to the Western Conference Semi-Finals by earning four points (three goals, one assist) during a first-round sweep of the Chilliwack Bruins. During the regular season, Machacek led Vancouver in points and goals, and tied for the team lead in assists. He ranked 14th overall in WHL scoring. The 6-1, 195-pound right wing recorded a season-high five points (two goals, three assists) on Feb. 6 at Portland and posted two-or-more points on 21 occasions this season.
Machacek, who was named the Giants team captain prior to this season, was honored as the WHL Player of the Month for February after tallying 27 points (eight goals, 19 assists) and a plus-13 rating in 14 games. He posted an eight-game scoring streak from Feb.15-29, registering 17 points (four goals, 13 assists) in that span.
The native of Lethbridge, Alberta has recorded 168 points (77 goals, 91 assists) in 203 games over three seasons with the Giants. He has added 38 points (18 goals, 20 assists) in 44 career WHL post-season contests and helped lead Vancouver to the 2007 Memorial Cup Championship.
